USC Morning Buzz: 10 Things To Fix For The Utah Game

Here’s my story on what USC needs to fix against Utah. Here’s an excerpt:

Play Randal Grimes: USC burned the freshman wide receiver’s redshirt year during garbage time against Oregon State, so it better use him going forward. Grimes did not know the full playbook earlier in the season but he only needs to know four or five specific plays to contribute.

If Grimes is good enough to debut in Game 6, then he must play the rest of the season. The same applies to freshman wide receiver Joseph Lewis, who continues to play a minor role despite being physically impressive.

Give Ronald Jones a chance: The junior tailback was considered a Cinderella choice for the Heisman Trophy. Did you know he has 26 carries in the past two games? With Stephen Carr hurt, Jones should be the featured back.

Remember what former USC coach John McKay said about giving the ball to O.J. Simpson so many times: “Why not? It’s not heavy.”

  1. Any offensive lineman will tell you that, run blocking is easier to pickup on then any other assignment , so why not line them up, and feed Ronald Jones the ball ? This coaching staff baffles me, but nevertheless, the Trojans are still 5-1

    • The question then is, who is in charge and why have they not straighten out this mess. It seems to me that Martin is way above his head in this mess. Only one person needs to make the call on offense. Have the other coaches decide what to call about 7 to 8 plays a head to set up a strategy. It looks like they are just trying plays to see if the work instead of having a tatic or strategy on what they want to accomplish.

      • Football today is about adjustments to what the defense is doing. These are not the days of USC having 5 NFL 1st round picks on the oline. These coaches will work it out. I think will see a great game on Saturday and Wolf will have to look for something else to crow about.

        • Football has ALWAYS been about making adjustments. So, what adjustments has Gomer, Tee11 and Fredo made ? As far as I can see, NONE

          • One of wolf’s cronies. We all laugh at the guy. He says the same sh**, just a different pile each day

          • What adjustments need to be make? You talk sh** but never post any solutions.

Tool-time is over, go have a donut with your boyfriend, wolfman

You two share something in common, low football IQ

After you’re done with your donut, heads 1 and 3 need more PT, use the new stuff….thanks

    • This team is nowhere physically dominant enough to play that type of game. We have tried that against Texas and got stuffed.

      • Then Gomer better start recruiting better OL and find a better coach. But being tough isn’t what Helton’s about, he’s all finesse.

  2. Just in Jim Mora turned down Oregon State job . 7 year deal worth 8 million a year plus a budget for face hugs and painting

    • According to reliable sources, the multi-billion dollar deal fell apart when Mora couldn’t get Bill Belichick to assume the post of offensive coordinator.

  3. Oh great you give the these fixes just 2 days before the game. They barely have time to fix anything now.
Shouldn’t have spent so much time on non stories. If we lose we blame you.

    • Yes, for sure. Withholding a Goldmine of football perfection until Thursday morning? Unfair, Scott, unfair

  4. Great list, coaches take heed. If you do these 10 things, we score 217 points this week. I really like the flashback to the rose bowl almost fall down play suggestion. Yes, tell Sam to run around to barely advert disaster and then make a play, especially with his awesome ball security. Also, the defense needs to come out underhyped. Not sure what that means, but it has to help. Finally coaches, just quit calling plays all together. When you call them to the sideline and signal into Sam with signage, he is fully aware that possibly it someone other than tee who called it and it is completely devastating to the team.

Do not fix the offensive line, keep it playing poorly. Let Sam keep turning it over.

    Fight On.

  5. Let me see, two weeks ago Rojo missed a game vs wazzu and Carr’s carries went up. Carr gets hurt and misses osu and will miss utah yet Scott in his infinite wisdom will have us increase the number of carries Rojo makes even though he’s not fully healed?
I’m all for running the ball, but over using Rojo this game would be dangerous and we still have two capable backups to pick up the slack. I’d prefer Rojo having healed more to carry a bigger role in the nd game.

  6. One would think that the coaches have a plan (I hope) by burning these redshirts on the true freshman wide receivers during game 6 due to injuries to the veterans and getting the youngens some valuable reps, and hopefully increased reps to really get them going in the next 2-3 games with a solid finish at the end of the season. Right, Flow?

  7. Well, 1 out of 10 (#9), great score Wolf. What would make Wolf happy about SC football? Every kick/punt return goes for a touchdown. The offense scores a touchdown on 1st down with Darnold scrambling. The defense gets a turnover on 1st down. McGrath gets to kick field goals in the 4th just cause everybody else has scored already.

    • I’ve never seen a more miserable fanbase at 5-1. When we lose it’s becaise we had injuries and for some reason the freshman OL weren’t coached up enough to step in and dominate right away. When we don’t cover the spread because we are playing new guys to build their capacity the sky is also falling. Apparently our 1st-3rd teams are supposed to all be equally well prepared and talented no matter what happens.

  8. some schools pay millions for a grizzled expert to come in and fix the defense or offense…..here Hell-Ton gets the same level of expertise, in numbered bullet points, no less, and he STILL won’t use the wolfman’s sage advise.

    • Somewhere, in an alternate universe, Coach Wolf has established USC football as an unstoppable dynasty, and the Wolf coaching tree stretches its majestic branches throughout the land, preaching the Wolf coaching philosophy as Saint Paul used to spread the Good News.

      • awesome vision of What Might Have Been…..wolf couldda been the Saban of the West, but with a ripped physique.

      • I think it was sometime in May of 2016 that the majority of physicists officially declared the alternate universe theory dead. Has something new happened since then? Have they discovered the graviton?

  9. My argument for playing Grimes is not about his redshirt but about the fact that he caught the ball and did something with it. He made the kind of play I was expecting from all these young guys when they saw their first ball. Big frame, athletic, not afraid of the moment, by all means, let’s see more.

    • We need people to take some of the pressure off Deontae and Mitchell. They’re not big enough to keep getting hit that much. Look what happened to Lee and Woods. What good is a redshirt if these players are that good they’re gone in three years regardless. Play them and see what we have.

      • Great point about the wear and tear on these guys as it’s already being borne out. I also would say that we’re not in the position to be burying talent under a pile of redshirts in general. Throw some of these young guys in the deep end.

        • Why not, if they’ve got it great, if not then on to the next guy. Only so many chances to get it right, you’ve got to see what you have.

        • Based on last week, I think WE’RE going to be very pleasantly surprised if we let these guys loose starting this Saturday. And the same goes for the coaches of Utah and Notre Dame —-only you can delete the word “pleasantly” from the sentence when it comes to them.

    • At least Kiffen and Sark let the freshman learn on the job. Helton is trying to baby this team. Just let em play.

  10. Can you HONESTLY disagree with anything Wolf said ?

The rah rah idiots will attack Wolf, but they watch a game like 7 year olds to begin with, as long as SC wins the problems don’t matter, until they do.

  11. Funny that Scott forgot to mention Lewis’ injury, evidently working with half truths and innuendo satisfies the DN journalistic ethic, it certainly does Wolfs.

  12. If anyone is interested, tomorrow am the ncaa will release it’s charges and results in their case against unc. It will be interesting to see if institutional control will be used to bring down one of the top programs in the country or if the ncaa sham continues.

    • These days with the NCAA, just give them the fake shock, the insincere apology, and facade of full cooperation, and it’s wrist slap time.

  13. Give RJ another chance? Unless the O-line has improved 50% better over last week, you give him sweeps to run and passes to catch. There ain’t any holes to run though at the line of scrimmage.
