Sunday Night With Clay Helton

I asked Clay Helton about criticism of offensive coordinator Tee Martin and he said, “I think Tee Martin has done a wonderful job.”

I asked Helton if Martin is the only one calling the plays this season and he said, “I think Tee Martin has done a wonderful job.”

Helton said a positive of the game was Utah’s zero yards on punt returns. I asked him about USC’s zero yards in punt retuns and Helton said it was like baseball and USC is waiting for the “right pitch to hit.”

Tailback Stephen Carr (foot) did not play and will try to do some running Monday. Defensive tackle Kenny Bigelow was not at the Utah game and is dealing with personal issues, Helton said.

  1. I sincerely hate to hear that anybody’s dealing with personal issues —-but, wow, Kenny Bigelow hasn’t exactly killed himself to help the team during his years at USC. Bigelow came in as a bright light —where does he go from here?

  2. Don’t expect any criticisms on his assistants from Heton. They’re his familiy, and you’re not. LOL!

  3. I was hoping that Bigelow would be a major contributor to the D this year. “Time off due to personal reasons”is a lot of times a precursor to has left the program.

  4. He has to support Martin, but why use an over-the-top adjective to describe Martin’s performance? Twice. Is he really thinking Martin’s performance has been “wonderful”? Hard to credibly walk that one back if needed.

    • Dude, read between the lines. He was politely telling wolf to shut the f**k up. Wolf has such a low football IQ, Clay’s response flew right over his head

  5. Business is handled internaly. Prepare for N.D.
On podcasts hinted from at least 3 reporters last week.A single reporter was really trying to create a rift between Sam and coaches. Wonder which reporter that was ?
It’s big game week. Bring on South Bend.

  6. I asked him about USC’s zero yards in punt retuns and Helton said, “I think Tee Martin has done a wonderful job.”

  7. Isn’t it ironic the guy who dubs himself as inside USC could not be further away? I think I have a better chance of getting info in a receiving line than SW in an actual press conference.

  8. If Clay has issues with Tee, he is going to deal with it internally and not through Scott.

    • Let’s see —-Clay can work with Tee directly and in private, or he can enter into 3 way talks with Scott, Tee and himself in a future, televised USC forum. It’s a close call.

    • Which explains the grab bag play calling vs Utah … trying to mix it up like Sam suggested.
USC offense is Darnold running around, converting 3rd downs, tiring out D’s so Jones can finally get some yards vs teams that all play 2nd team qbs

    • Oh no I lost in the pool, I had you hiding in shame from fuucla’s latest blow out loss untill Monday.

      • LOL. Nothing could be finer than goop loses. Can’t wait to see how bozo u does against Az.

Speaking of losses goop, there’s a very good chance Andain’twinning and his old Lady will be taking the Greyhound Bus back to the Florida swamps and Jr. College BB coaching.

  9. No sitting active coach worth his weight would throw his staff under a bus publicly, it would amount to job suicide. Helton is a good diplomat. I don’t think he believes any of what he says, but the place to tell the truth is on campus in his office , privately. Not in a press conference.

  10. You should just be happy that you are allowed to listen in on the weekly call. Asking questions is a privilege earned by members of the media.

  11. Kenny Bigelow should just retire and find a way to get his degree asap.

Poor guy can’t stay healthy, also lacks talent and is one of those unfortunate HS stars who just doesn’t have what it takes to compete at a high level. This happens to too many HS hot shots to count and Kenny’s one of them.

Good luck Kenny. Thanks for your efforts to be your best.

  12. Gomer will be the least remember coach in SC history … he is canned shortly after Darnold leaves, which for his sake better be soon before he is completely ruined.

    • Hey Goatboy, you are appropriately named. Remember Paul Hackett, who was even worse than Tollner? Maybe Helton does not measure up to your standards, but calling him Gomer is an insult to the coach of my favorite university. You probably did not even go there, otherwise you would respect him and see that his record is not so bad, and his character is much better than the goofs we had in there recently. I was there during the McKay days, and he was not perfect either, but is an icon. Granted, I would not compare these coaches to Robinson, Dave Levy or Marv Goux, but they are the best we’ve got right now.

  13. I like him as a head coach; he delegates and oversees all aspects,he just needs to better eval players at positions for the defense that is called…the 2ndary is always out of position, holding and interfering…I do not think they are talented enough to play man on man the whole game, so mix it up.

  14. You can kiss the PAC-12 goodbye as far as the playoffs are concerned. Too many teams in front of USC even if they win out. I think everyone is now ready to judge Lynn Swann on how he handles the coaching situation the end of this season. I know I am.
