Notre Dame QB Wimbush Healthy

Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush is 100 percent for the USC game, according to Irish coach Brian Kelly. Wimbush has not played since Sept. 30 after hurting his foot. The Irish had a bye last week. Did you know USC does not have a regular-season bye?

  1. “Did you know USC does not have a regular-season bye?”

Hey wolf, how could we forget. You remind us numerous times every week. Same sh*t, just a different pile

  2. Yep, a bye week is good for getting injured players back and regrouping. It’s just lucky for us we’re so healthy and running like a well-oiled machine on the field. Into the breach once again dear friends…

    • Kelly is coaching for his life and, obviously, has been saving his quarterback for THIS game. Let’s see how that strategy works for him. I’ll take Darnold —with or without a bye. He’ll make the usual mistakes —-but I’m betting he’ll make fewer of them. And he’ll make the usual great plays —-and I’m betting he’ll make more of them.

      • I’d love to see him avoid the big mistake this Saturday. It might be the first time this season that we’re as excited to play the opposing team as they are to play us.

        • Actually, I think it’s the second time we’re gonna be as “up” as the opposition, Clay. The first time was Stanford. I don’t think you’ll see the tense Sam that played that indifferent first half against Utah. I think you’ll see the “love of the game” Sam that played the second half —-a few mistakes, and lots of great plays.

          • Me too. We are not playing a team above our talent level. As a matter of fact, we’re playing a team that is slightly below our talent level. Let’s not get all pumped up because it’s “Notre Dame” running the ball —treat ’em like any other team, kick their butts and leave.

          • It’s politically incorrect —-but, hell yeah, pillaging!

      • It was reported last night that Darnold leads all QBs in college football in fumbles…..so far 10! That stat surprised me.

        • It doesn’t surprise me, Lunderful —-Sam holds the ball way out while he’s scrambling and he’s surprisingly hesitant on hand offs. But this year, except for Washington State, he gets that crap out of his system in the first half. I’ve said it before, Sam has a need this season to put himself in trouble before he feels justified changing from Clark Kent to Superman. Before kick off Saturday, I hope Helton lets him fumbles six hand offs in a row in the locker room….

    • Oregon State was our Bye. Practically the entire team took the day off (more so than all the other games, I mean). Helton did sit a lot of guys early and he held out some guys.

      • Ha!

      • Did you see OJ is back in midseason form?

CHICKS DIG BAD BOYS: O.J. Simpson slides right back into the Vegas nightlife scene as he mingles with three women. “Looks like O.J.’s still got game — and incredibly, some women are still willing to play along.”

        • Gt —-Can you imagine where O. J. will be by this time next year? The possible scenarios are limitless……

  3. This has been the one to dread since the Cal game, when it was clear this team was different from what we expected. Give Wolf credit: his pessimism is based on a realistic assessment of their O-line, receivers, and coaching. I’ll take that to his usual obsessions with David Sills, Lane Kiffin, and James Franklin.

    • You listed Notre Dame’s positives, Sportsblab (all of which I agree with). Here are the negatives (one of which overlaps with your list): Their D-line, defensive backs and coaching (you never know when Kelly is gonna go bananas).

  4. I heard nothing but high praise for Trojan d lineman Brandon Pili ever since his first practice with the team. Well, we has he been all season? If the kid is good enough to play then why not play him? He’s more than likely not going to stick around for 4 years, might as well put him to good use while they got him. God knows the d line could use him.

    • We heard nothing but high praise for Darreus Rogers ever since his first practice with the team. He finally showed up for his SR year. Now he’s a practice squad guy in Seattle.

  5. Brandon Wimbush

    68/131 for 783yards (51.9%) 6 TDs and 2 INTs
68 carries for 402 yards (ave 5.9 ypc)

    • ….but throw in his 40 time, hoohoolian —-4.71. He’s not like the fastest guy we’ll ever face…..

      • I am far more comfortable facing QBs with completing 52% than the 70% guys!

Stuff the run, make them throw!

Game 3 of USC’s CFP is Saturday!

          • Does he have a good leg? Kick it out of Z?
Will be curious to hear after practice who is fielding punts.

          • Me too. I don’t think I’ve seen a good punt return all season. I KNOW I haven’t seen a great kick off return. I’d be surprised to learn we’ve taken one as far as our own 40!

          • No idea what our longest Kick Return is. However, we rank 35th with a 23.28 average on 16 attempts.

On the other hand, Punt Returns suck:
#94 — 6 returns for only 27 yards (4.5 av.) NCAA should keep track of forced punts or Fair catches/unfielded. It’s not necessarily just Ajene’s fault that there is ZERO excitement in the Punt Return game, poor blocking may force him to Fair Catch more than Adoree did.

Speaking of Kick Returns, UClowns never get the jab when I tell them how much I’d love to see Darnay Holmes return 20 kicks every game!

          • I think Clay’s (pacifist) philosophy on kick offs is ‘so much can go wrong if you touch the ball that it’s safer to let it just roll to the one yard line.’ Not many other coaches take that position (actually, none that I can think of).
Maybe the uclans will get the Darnay Holmes joke better after we score several dozen points on them on November 18th……..

          • I just got tired of asking why the double pass has not been used with Greene. Now Greene isn’t really even in the passing game.

This would be a great time to pull that one out of the hat, Tee!

          • Greene was 3/4 for 127 yards and 1 TD with the double pass… IN 2015!!!

No need to revisit that play…

          • I honestly don’t think we’ll need it, peter. I think we can go in there, play it straight and beat them up. [As tempting as it is, it might even be better to stay away from any plays that take too long to develop].

        • Very true since their RB has more yards this year than Penn St’s Barkley. The trenches are going to be the key to victory. Fight On!!!

  6. If USC wins this game, sw will complain they beat a team whose qb has not played since Sept. 30th.

  7. I have a feeling that this will be a break out game for Vaughn and Burnett. ND is agreesive on D and will probably blitz causing SC to run a lot of quick hitch and slant routes. They should game plan Grimes in this one. We need his length an athleticism.

  8. Wolf has been obsessively pitching Darnold as the savior from bad coaching. But against Utah, Darnold was the problem (3 fumbles, one near pick in a single half!). Sticking to the game plan and executing properly was the savior (along with sheer luck). This week it is on the players — all of them, to get themselves focused on the details, the game plan, their assignments, etc. Play a clean game, win the turnover battle, and we win. The spread favoring ND is based upon the assumption that we won’t clean it all up.
