USC Morning Buzz: It’s Game Day In South Bend

BEN.WILSON

It’s the game of the year for USC . . . and Notre Dame. This is the first time since 2011 that Brian Kelly has faced USC with its full-time coach. He faced Ed Orgeron in 2013 and Clay Helton in 2015. That means Kelly has never defeated a full-time USC head coach in South Bend because he lost to Lane Kiffin in 2011.

In the flashback photo above, USC fullback Ben Wilson goes over the top of the line of scrimmage against Notre Dame in 1962.

  1. We could use some of those guys today. The makeshift O line finally gelled so of course we are putting in a new bunch. I hope this works. I hate predicting false starts.
I also hope they remember Notre Dame blasting through the gaps to block a meaningless punt a few years ago. USC must play to win every down.

  2. “This is the first time since 2011 that Brian Kelly has faced USC with its full-time coach.” – Scott Wolf

We have to go deep in to the history books to see where this one went wrong. All the way to November of 2016 when first year head coach Clay Helton faced off against the Brian Kelly coached Fighting Irish… I remember it like it was, oh, hmmm… Last Year!

He also coached against Sark in 2014.

Lane Kiffin was the full-time coach in 2012.

Seems like we’re history only counts in odd numbered years for this one.

    • Actually I think he meant at home but your point is well taken. Besides in Scott’s eyes Helton is barely a head coach.

      • Probably, but you would think that a career, ummm… blogger (journalist seems strong), might be able to proof read a three sentence paragraph or at least the single sentence that was the main point of his whole post.

        • He did mean at home. Sark beat N.D. at the coliseum also.

sw proofread? I imagine sw with Alfred E. Neuman hair and freckles saying, “What me proofread?”

          • He probably “means” to come up with insightful stuff all the time, but one of the unfortunate limits of the written word is that you actually have to write it down in order to get your point across. Typically the journalistic standard exceeds “what I meant to publish was…”.

    • Funny how Wolf says he doesn’t read comments yet the correction adding “in South Bend” has been made.

  3. Going to be a great game if you are a USC fan. After the game I am so looking forward to seeing Kelly outraged and unhappy.

  4. writer say usc been using part time couches all these years, may be they wuoldnt nead to couch harder if they was more then just part time wirkers,

  5. Last notre Dame fun fact: guess the number of qbs that have started a game previous to this year that vaunted notre Dame defense has played against this year.

That would be one. F’ da leprechaun.

    Beat the irish.

    • I’d say the number is equal to the amount of integrity Crudus Cheesecake has on a scale of 1-10: Zero.

        • the number of qbs that have started a game previous to this year that vaunted notre Dame defense has played against this year

          IS ZERO

The amount of integrity Crudus Cheesecake (brutus beefcake) has on a scale of 1-10

          IS ZERO

          they are equal.

          OK, ONE. Fine.

      • Actually the number is there already, it’s 1. I didn’t get the crudus reference though. Thanks.

  6. BTW: I LOVE that hotel commercial where the dads says, “…wish mom were here…and not over there.” Perfect depiction of the Michigan fan base: idiotically delusional.

    • I’m fearful that our mediocre coaching and the rash of injuries will combine to give us the undesired result.

  7. We play as we can we win – we have a better qb, better receivers, we also have a strong defensive front line and the injured players have been replaced by some unexpected talented scrubs (Rector in particular).

    We win

  8. 8 minutes left in the game, Team Mullet has ZERO penalties.

Imagine what we could be if our penalty count were even close to that!

    • Don’t expect too many favors in the penalty department today, hoohoolian.
      #AndBeCarefulAroundThoseBigWindows,ok?

      • Team Mullet made it 59 minutes and 21 seconds without a penalty. Incredible.

        We can dream…

  9. Self-loathing Scottie wants ND to beat his alma in the WORST way so he can squeal tonight….

    • …..and that loathing could be the very magic USC needs to go undefeated the rest of the way, LamontRaymond……

  10. 2 of my Dogs have won, killing FTC/FSC and Dupe. Go Texas (Team Mullet may be the only team ahead of us to lose today)

May the dogs continue to Bark in both Los Angeles-team games!

  11. We have a unique opportunity today. If we are lucky enough to get a convincing victory (14 points or so) we are propelled to the top of playoff hopefuls. That will be because everyone’s darling number two, Georgia will have won by 1 in the same stadium and people will be forced to look at USC or Georgia completely different. If we can pull this off the beginning of the season is forgotten and the playoff run begins again.

  12. get ready to have your team’s butt handed to you on a silver platter. ND will cream usc. simple as that, buds.

        • Sorry buddy my Samsung broke that day. It was a bad weekend. Our kids went 0-2 in Riverside but they played competitively for 3 innings in both but continue to do one thing right and that is pay attention. All of our kids play Little Leaugue during the year and they are still trying to keep up mentally with picking off, leading off, and the actual rules of baseball. They’re getting better though. Surprisingly none of the other coaches or parents gave me a hard time about the Trojans. I watched the first half and I wasn’t upset about losing, but the way we lost was what I was p!$$3d off at the most. We didn’t have any kind pep in our step at all. Jack Jones reminded me why he’s not a punt returner right now when he should be except he still has problems receiving the ball. I don’t know, this is just my own point of view but this team just didn’t look anywhere near ready to play Norte Dame.

          • Saved me the pleasure of not getting kicked out for cursing thats for sure. And American Airlines not allowing my tickets name to be changed was now a good thing. My buddy said some Cubs fan in a buisness suit tried to fight him because they got stomped and a ND fan was trying to get a rise out of them. I think i dodged a potential night in jail also.

        • Like to see them return as many as possible, darnay is a real talent the ruins should exploit as much as they can!

      • usc is not even close to as good as they’ve been hyped from the start nor worthy of the unwarranted hype they still get from clueless sports analysts.

The cool thing is that we shall soon see if usc can even hang with UCLA…don’t be overconfident, the trojies have looked bad and weak this season.

        • Let me see,
mora and rosen together have managed to beat 5 different pac12 schools since rosen was a freshman. Darnold and Helton have beaten 10 different schools the last 2 yrs, and your throwing shade. What a putzs. You lose again.

          • Try to stay on topic and keep up…it was Sas who brought UCLA into this. I simply said the truth: that ND will beat usc because the latter is not that good.

          • Oh yeah, I forgot the trolls make the rules and define the topic of conversation. My bad. Please accept this apology with the dripping sarcasm i intended. Putsz.

        • UGLY is not even close to as good as their 3-3 record nor worthy of the unwarranted hype they still get from clueless sports analysts.

        • That was embarrassing. I can’t even defend the team on this one except saying that they aren’t being coached up in my opinion. And in case anyone cares or not I didn’t post til now because my Note5 broke by sleeping on it over the night. So I wasn’t hiding from this loss. Luckily I had a birthday party to attend and drink away some of the pain that Night. The Alabama game was flashing back like a bad acid trip.
