USC Email Of The Day

Here’s an email I received from a former USC player who lives in Florida.

“Every chance they get they talk about injuries. If they have that many problems, they need to look at their strength and conditioning program.”

  1. The S&C coach was at UDUB and they had more injures than you could shake a stick at.

Helton bottom fished for his coaches because he doesn’t have the connections to get better assistants.

Just look at his clown OL coach, they guy couldn’t even answer 5 legit questions without blowing a gasket.

His OC threw his brother Fredo under the bus.

It’s time to clean house and start fresh.

    • There will be some changes on the offensive side of the ball(coachingwise) after the season. I guarantee it unless they turn it around and start to play like champions(which I don’t expect). Lynn Swann will demand changes.

  2. Just like they’ve been having offensive line problems for four years, which should have been resolved after two. But every time I look up, Clay Helton’s coaching staff is trying to load the, depth chart up with quarterbacks, and receivers

    • If you go back a few years, eveyone was excited about the USC O line, it was going to be the best in the nation. Now, after having a new coach every year since God knows when and zero coaching up, we are still playing with a group of essentially high school 4-5 stars. They came to USC to gain a shot at the nfl, but sadly that shot won’t come for most of them.
So tell me Fred, as it stands right now, how many receivers and QB’s should USC have on hand, and how many O linemen. Right now I count 18 O linemen, 24 at receiver including TE, two of which are walk ons, and 5 at QB. Seems about balanced to me. What do you think.

      • Why should a college team have that many receivers, what purpose does it serve, especially since you can only play two, or three at a time. Ten Offensive lineman should rotate every game, to keep them fresh, and to gain valuable experience

        • WR is the most injured position on the team, year after year. You generally have 4 receivers on the field every normal play. They generally rotate 6-8 players at receiver positions. I remember when they had so many RBs they didn’t know who to play next, finally a couple transferred. I still don’t see your argument. If they had fewer players at WR, where would you want them, all at O line? Then you have transfers there. 18 players at O line is enough for any program, perhaps one or two more, but you are going to have guys leave because of PT.

          • Head counts are not unlikely part of it, but not all of it.

            We’re all just guessing, right?

Do you think USC suffers inordinately high number of injuries? The coaches could rule that out by having an staff assistant tot up injuries for other programs and the Trojans. If they have done that, Helton hasn’t said much about it

Do you think the playbook may be too complex for a team that skews young? For what’s worth, Harvey Hyde said ND runs the same four or five plays from several different formations.

Do you think a one-back offense from the shotgun is ideal, if the QB isn’t a true dual-threat?

What’s your opinion of the team’s efforts to deal with increasing rush pressure on Darnold?

Does it strike you that the staff has a good handle on the problems that you have observed?

Is your impression of CH that he’s he’s highly analytical and that his style just doesn’t convey that. Does he remind you of Belichick, or Parcells, or Saban, or other coaches who have done well? (I don’t mention PC, because he has such a playful, upbeat personality and such love for what his work, that the comparison would seem less than helpful.)

I always liked this quote from Peter Drucker:

“Management is about human beings. Its task is to make people capable of joint
performance, to make their strengths effective and their weaknesses
            irrelevant.”
You’re a pretty aware, smart guy. If Drucker is half right, I personally do NOT get the impression that this task is being laudibly carried out by the current management of the FB team.

Swann will have to figure it out, and I won’t be surprised if he does pretty well at that. Considering his FB background, he’s humble, he’s likeable, and he knows a lot of very knowledgeable people in this industry.

          • Yeah, I heard it. Darrell doesn’t think we’re taking practice seriously enough —-especially in light of the Notre Dame loss. His advice seemed pretty obvious to me: Bring more energy and physicality to practice or surrender your ability to control tempo during games.

  3. OJ is right! He didn’t allow his injuries from being a double murderer, robber and kidnapper… Wonder how he finds time to comment on sorry state of southern cal football all the while searching for the “real murderer”

    #KillOn

    • Look who just woke up!…..Double shifts at the 5 guys takes it toll.

How do you determine which handle to use. … Analytics is beyond your. intellect

      • He’s resting up for another big weekend in the bowels of a metro station. Theodore still cannot get to the Big Leagues, Union Station, so he keeps plugging away at the Hollywood/Highland station.

    • Ted, your comments are always so thought provoking and worthwhile. I am sure you are exhausted now, go take your nap.

    • Oh Charlie, how come you never mention ucla football? Embarrassed? Kind of like the HRC debacle last November. Remember, she was going to be your Queen? Been a tough year for you. Hope you restore some of your dignity and esteem you have lost with ucla FB, BB, and HRC.

      • half-baked FAKE prognostication USC 24 – ND 21

        Actual score – ND: 49 – bozo u: 14.

        • You predicted Hillary would be president and you still show your face around here and criticize other’s predictions?

  4. Ivan Lewis’ email and phone number listed on the USC athletic site if anyone actually want to ask him about the strength and conditioning program. Flow wont.

  5. I think I made this point earlier in the week, I used to know who the strength and conditioning coach was, but that was back a few years ago when USC didn’t just recruit they reloaded. When the 3rd string was the fourth quarter team and that was only to get them experience not to rest the starters. Nobody walked in practice and an injury or two a week was expected. This no pads nonsense started back in the sanction years because of the thin roster, but it shouldn’t be carried on.
So much has happened to this team in the past few years it is really starting to get to me. Every year I say no more season tickets….and then I cave and buy them. I wonder if the is a twelve step program for this addiction something like the first four are horrible head coaches. Must I go to a UCLA game? I mean I can still get tickets on Groupon.

  6. I just listened to Sam and Yogi Roth discussing the Notre Dame game. A couple of things really stood out. One, Sam is really smart. He knows his way around an interview way better than any of his coaches. Two, Sam is outta here at the end of the season. That’s the reason he’s not beating himself up too much about the loss. The loss is something for his “old” team to deal with —-he’s already thinking about the future. Listen to the podcast —it’s impossible to come away with any other conclusions.
    #WonderHowManyOtherPlayersHaveSameMindset?

    • Don’t doubt Sam is a quick study ‘but’ many NFL analysts state he’s not ready and the best he can hope for is to ride the bench for at least a year which won’t happen because he’ll get picked by either SFO or CLE.

Wonder if he leaves if ‘major’ staff changes we’re made and/or Helton got tossed?

      • He’s gone, Alv. You can hear it in every syllable of his ‘what-me-worry?’ description of the Notre Dame loss.

          • That’s extremely good advice, Alv —-but Sam seems bound and determined to FOLLOW in Sanchez’s footsteps.

          • I was watching the replay of the game and was amazed how he doesn’t have a nervous breakdown with the lack of protection.

          • He’s a gamer for sure. Great kid. But even fearless Sam has had a “what the f**k?!” look on his face 51% of the time in every game since Stanford.

          • Turnovers account for the majority of the 51%
From a NFL standpoint Sam is very raw.. As the supporting cast around him has changed the flaws become more obvious.

        • There’s psychological reasons for his tone and demeanor, equating it to events in the future is a stretch

          #amour propre

          • Ha! I like where your head’s at tonight, Gabby.
By the way, did you hear Darrell Rideaux’s podcast? He was disappointed in the mood at practice —thought they were taking the N.D. loss too lightly and not showing enough energy. In Darrell’s words, “energy at practice translates into tempo in games.” It’s going to be interesting to see whether you’re right about the team not showing all their cards in practice but being ready to kick a** once they get on the field in the desert.
            #IHopeYou’reRight&Me&DarrellAreWrong!

      • i”m 99% sure that Head Coach Helton and his Staff will be coaching the Trojans next year and doing a great job, minus the D@mn injuries. rusoviet, You should know better then John B.

        • The little 1% being if Helton and his Stuff gets beat up by ASU – ASU?!? – loses to Zona or ucla…and doesn’t go to the Rose Bowl. If this is a Sun Bowl year, Helton’s GONE!

          • The Rose Bowl is a playoff game. PAC-12 champ would only go as a playoff team. Therefore, USC is probably not going to Rose Bowl this season.

    • MG, You don’t have the foggiest idea what Sam and his teammates have planned after the season ends.

      • Not trying to sharp shoot you— but let me help you state your position. You could correctly say “MG, you don’t KNOW what Sam has planned after the season.” And I’d readily agree with you, schammer. But as for having a foggy idea —yeah, I do. Listen to the podcast. Listen to Sam talking about the Dodgers and the Lakers. Listen to how little he cares about the EPIC loss he just participated in. Now, Sam’s way too much of a competitor not to make every effort to bounce back against Arizona State—- but he plainly is NOT all tied up in this team or the way it will be remembered. I read that as, “My work is done here.”

        • Basing your opinion off a podcast?….Michael, I’m disappointed in you. You’re more intelligent than that.

Are you familiar with the term “underhanded manipulation”…..just curious

          • Ha! I’m not sure I ever heard the term before, Gabby (but I’m pretty sure I practice it all the time).

  7. Kinesiologists will tell you that athletes are prone to injury when their blood sugar level is low. So keeping athletes with enough carbohydrates and sugar, and hydrated, is critical. I’m sure the USC trainers know this. But Jalen Greene was dropping balls early in the season and no one asked if an eye exam was necessary. So maybe some obvious things are being missed?
