Crosstown Rivalry Photo Of Day

Here is the 1979 game at the Coliseum. UCLA tight end Tim Wrightman is covered by USC linebacker Larry McGrew.

  1. Well, we know this isn’t a shot of Jack Jones —-the USC defender is in the same frame as the receiver.

        • Here’s our problem come Saturday, trojan_1972. We’re facing the best quarterback of the season —-and he’s gonna target Marshall and Jones all day long. I sure would love it if Gustin were playing —-Josh would enjoy the game a lot less.

          • Absolutely MG – hoping that Pendergast comes up with an effective pass rush – otherwise the DBs get picked apart.

          • Given our corners, Rosen is going to complete some big passes. But, given UCLA’s o-line, Joshie might not make it thru the first half if we blitz the crap outta him.

          • Yes indeed – and Rojo, along with Carr and Ware, should be able to run and run and run…keep Rosen off the field.

          • I love the idea of running at these guys —they’ll start to not want it by the 3rd quarter.
But I love the idea of mixing it up, too. I don’t want us to try to keep the ball from them so much as I want to see us score and score. If the scores come fast, I think it’s okay, trojan_1972.

      • No, that’s Jack. Let’s give Iman more credit, Paul. He would have stayed with his receiver —-and gotten hold of his jersey.

        • I guess so. But both would still let the reciever complete the catch. And Clay Helton says nothing afterwords to the defense.

          • Langley and harris have been playing better than the starters . Lopes too. Maybe start them? Either way, Rosen cant out-duel Darnold amd Mora is worse than Helton. So im not worried. Guna sit back and sip on some whiskey and enjoy the show

          • Langley and Harris as starters? Check! Sam winning the scoring contest with Rosen? Check! Enjoy the show w/glass in hand? Check!

  2. Game was a blowout win for USC. That season was marred by the second half collapse against Stanford, cost us the NC

    • That 21-21 loss to Stanford was just …. uggghhhh
Couldn’t believe it happens especially up 21-zip at half.
Bobbled snap on game winning FG attempt was brutal ( Scott Tinsley ) but Eric Hipp was like 4-17 that year so probably would had missed anyway.

  3. 1979 was kind of the last hurrah for SC football for a long time, except for a few wonderful years.

The next year, SUCLA saved Terry Donahue’s job with a lucky tipped pass and a victory.

  4. Larry McGrew was a really good linebacker on that 1979 USC team as was Chip Banks, Riki Gray, Dennis Johnson, Eric Scoggins, and Steve Busick … in 1978 Trojans also had Garry Cobb and Charlie Moses.
Amazing talent at linebacker, probably unmatched in the annals of college football.
