USC Quick Thought

How much sense did it make to take defensive tackle Kenny Bigelow to Notre Dame after he retired as a player, when he clearly intended to keep playing elsewhere. It’s obvious he was unhappy freshman Brandon Pili moved ahead of him on the depth chart.

Flow, you’re missing your negative post title. We’ll await your edit…

    • CORTEZ THE KILLER

      It’s a valid question

  • CORTEZ THE KILLER

Because Gomer is Gomer, Mr. Huggy Feelgood, dont hurt anyones feelings.

    Kumbaya baby, Kumbaya

I can’t wait for him to leave USC

  • Old Trojans never die

Will USC get a tax write off on this bad investment? I am guessing education and medical cost USC about a quarter of a million dollars, and this jerk is selling his services elsewhere? I still say that USC should put a lean on his future earnings.

    • CORTEZ THE KILLER

You want to do this to Browne as well ?

      • Old Trojans never die

Browne actually tried, he failed like a deer in the headlights, but he tried.

      • Grammymb

        Max wasn’t hurt.

    • Arturo

That’s a lot of money and I see your point. However, recruiting is on going and treating ex-players well or badly could be even more costly.

      • Old Trojans never die

See if he were an exPLAYER you might have a point but he pretty much sat out his time at the university. Then he quit because he was not the star he thought he was. Also it might serve to deter the recruits by sending a message that full ride scholarships are not a blank check, they are a contract for services. When the services are not rendered the person on contract should be held responsible.

        • Michael Guarino

Of course you’re right, legally speaking. But I think Arturo has a more engaging sense of public relations.

          • Old Trojans never die

Absolutely, that is why I post this stuff on a no name blog instead of sending it to the L.A. Times or maybe Lynn Swannn-
I do it for laughs mostly.

  • SCgrad12

This whole deal with Bigelow makes no sense whatsoever. In the middle of the year he “retires” to become a mentor/coach. He gets a sixth year of eligibility, “unretires”, and now transfers. This is what happens when your head coach wants to be your buddy instead of the driving force behind the program.
My take is this, you want to transfer/retire/quit? Fine, there is someone ready to take your spot. Best of luck down the road. We are all faced with adversity in our lives. Those who do well in life learn how to confront it, deal with it, and overcome it. But in order to do that you need someone to give you a dose of reality and not some snowflake crap.

    • Scott Preston

…”This is what happens when your head coach wants to be your buddy instead of the driving force behind the program.”…

Couldn’t agree with you more there.

    • Trojans 6942

      Outstanding

    • Ben Factor

Seriously: SW shows signs of losing all rational perspective.

      This is a problem? Please!

I’m all for a new HC, because I see CH as an ineffective manager/executive.

But seriously, these are young people, who are underpaid to risk their health. If they take advantage of you a little, don’t worry about it!

Focus on what will bring greater success to the enterprise.

    • gotroy22

Duece Bigelow Male Gigolo played Helton.

    • Grammymb

What good would come from being a jerk. There are bigger battles to fight.

      • SCgrad12

Have you ever been in a leadership position? If you are not consistently strong from the get go, the people under you will walk all over you. If you equate being a strong leader with being a jerk, then that says a lot about you and your mindset.

  • LamontRaymond

Kenny just wasn’t ready or willing to compete. He came in as a top 10 player out of high school and never was able to keep himself healthy. The kids are hungry, and talented. He simply was passed up. Wish him the best on his next stop!

    • Jack B

Bigelow was a victim of his own over-inflated prep ranking profile. He was never USC material, but still got a great education so good for him.

I don’t know what the weird trumped up deal about his being some “player mentor” was all about, nor why he had to suddenly “retire” right before the ND game when we could have used any breathing body, but some things are just better left alone.

      • Pudly76

Writing was on the wall from spring thru training camp and into the season, he’d been supplanted by the freshmen already, with more on the way. I’d rather he go than have him using up that scholarship here next year.

        • Gabby

It turned out to be a bad return on an investment. Hopefully the kid had his ducks inline on the academic side

  • Sandy Underpants

Best of luck to Bigelow. SC regularly gives their players unconditional releases because SC is better than everyone. In the current case, SC is just luckier than everyone else, but the fact remains, anyone that wants out of the best school on earth, can go.

    • JustOwns

Certainly Mr. Wet Underpants, bozo u is so much better than every Div. 1 Univ. FB/BB program at cheating and being busted for cheating

      • Sandy Underpants

You’re the guy from Shoplifting U right? The university across town with the thug basketball players that just admitted to robbing stores in china and their university continues to grant their free tuition and make them the face of the school and the faces found in post offices across the country of China, right? I need to confirm that before making a response to your post.

      • Pasadena Trojan

Squatter, no one has cheating over ugly. Look at Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden when he bought those 10 fake championships, look at Jim Harrick who bought the 11th one, look at Alford allowing time for those players to steal not once, not twice but three times in three different stores, look at ugly with Tokyo Rose cheetin’ for the japs. Bite me on the PC stuff. Ugly is steep in cheating, lying, stealing, thruggery.
        U Convicts Lose Again.

      • ItsAllAboutTheBall

I heard that “The Dynasty is Over” Billboards are being replaced by “Future So Bright You Gotta Steal Shades” ones.

  • Ed Garrett

arrgghhh!!! im so angree at him for makeing desicions in his own bestest intrest that dont effect me one bit, he probaly a gutty litle bruin know, smdh!

  • Scott Preston

So, is Kenny Bigelow the SC’s version of Carlo Rizzi?

  • Chris

wow. Let’s bang on a kid who did everything he was asked to do. Went to school, got his degree, all the while rehabbing after two blown knees. Now realizes he may have one last chance at his football dream, but will have to go elsewhere to do it. Or let’s bang on the coach who should have just yanked his scholarship. Even though coaches make commitments to kids and parents that they will seek what is best for the student athlete. Yank the scholarship of a student athlete who worked through a really bad hand that was dealt to him. Would you send your kid to a school that cuts kids loose as soon as they are injured? Good for coach for sticking with him. Good for Kenny for finishing school and pursuing his best option to keep playing football.
    Fight on!!!!

    • Arturo

      Well said, Chris.

    • Trojans 6942

Exceptional. Too shorten it up. Do you want to be like bama who forces kids to gray shirt once it’s understood this isn’t working.

  • Jack B

And people wonder why the Pac12 doesn’t command the same stature as other conferences in football.

    From the Paul Finebaum Show:

Current Championship Game Ticket Prices – just to get in the door. Not good seats.

    SEC $435
    ACC $113
    Big 12 $103
    Big Ten $49
    Pac12 $31

    • RegalTrojan

31 bucks ain’t too shabby considering many people wouldn’t cough up much more than 31 cents to watch the gutties go through the motions these days, JB.

      • Jack B

Don’t the little gutties always give a lot of seats away to groups like the Clamdiggers and the Chinese Bandits?

        • RegalTrojan

Yeah, for sure. But from now on, they’ll need to give off much more luxurious catering services and posh entertainment for any Chinese officials visiting their ugly campus because free football game tickets simply won’t go anywhere with them as far as getting their shoplifting athletes off the hook. LOL!

          • Jack B

I’m thinking ucla entrance requirements and financial aid for a lot of Chinamen just took on a whole new profile.

New class at ucla – Chinese Retail Theft Law

          • RegalTrojan

LMAO! And the gutties will proclaim it as the beginning of The New Age Curriculum!

          • USCDAN1986

            Checkers for extra credit! Lol

          • gotroy22

They stuck the students in the Third World section.

        • Arturo

          Or public elementary schools.

      • Pasadena Trojan

They would not spend 31 cents to see the ruins play in the conference championship game as well.

    • Ben Factor

      That’s an interesting tidbit.

OTOH, the Big Ten (B1G now?) sits just above the Pac12.

But the B1G TV deal is very lucrative, right?

    • Gabby

I’ll buy that for $31,make it four tickets. Then spend a day in The Castro visiting my peeps

    • John Pepper

Tickets to 05 Orange Bowl Natty v Oklahoma were $25 and ND game $500 in 04. What’s your point?

  • Tebow_Obama

USC has dropped even further in the recruiting rankings, they are now sitting at #34.

There are enough 4 & 5 star recruits on USC’s current roster to where that talent alone can carry Helton to the end of his contract. It’s obvious Lynn Swann is clueless and has no intention (even if he had the power/authority to do it) of replacing Clay Helton.

A couple of more years of Helton struggling to win games over inferior teams, big time recruits watching as Helton and his staff fail to develop players and fail to make USC a legitimate national championship contender, by the time Helton’s contract is up the cupboard of talent will be completely bare and all the sunshine pumpers will wonder what the hell happened.

The true fans that know Trojan football were right about Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, we knew they weren’t worth a damn and we knew that before they got the job. Same way we’re right about Clay Helton. Sure Clay Helton is a nice man, probably too nice, but the fact is the man is not head coach material. He hasn’t shown he can make adjustments during a game, I mean you, me and everyone else who isn’t clueless knows that Helton is never going to take the Trojans to the next level.

This is what you’re going to get from Clay Helton, 3 to 4 losses this year. Recruiting has already started to fall off so you can expect more losses per season. It’s going to get ugly in a hurry after this season and Lynn Swann or someone at USC better get serious about wanting to win national championships. The mess that’s being created right now, it’s going to fall on Lynn Swann. Why didn’t Lynn Swann see it coming?

Lane Kiffin, we saw that nightmare about to unfold, Pat Haden thought he knew better and kept saying he was “150% behind Lane Kiffin”…what a joke, the both of them.

Steve Sarkisian, there weren’t many that didn’t see that trainwreck about to happen. Pat Haden hired him anyway. What a nightmare of embarrassment that turned out to be, whining and crying up in Palo Alto one minute and the next Sarkisian is inebriated, cursing and falling all over the place at the Tribute To Troy.

So who does Pat Haden hire? He hires the flunky of the two previous flunkies who weren’t worth a damn. And it’s the damnedest thing, no one at USC seems to get it, Helton can’t coach worth a damn. Let Helton finish out the season, but at some point Swann or whoever at USC is going to have to get real and start looking for a qualified head coach. If not, Haden’s mistakes fall on Lynn Swann.

    • RegalTrojan

I must say there’s a lot of the naked truth in what you said there, TO.

      • Trojans 6942

They were some, but understanding situations and having vision of recruiting wasn’t one of them. Helton is a proven recruiter. There’s two cycles in recruiting for the first time this year. USC doesn’t want to promise or take on to many kids it’s waiting for the first cycle is over. So they are slow-rolling for the second cycle and maybe play the game that’s always been play’ed.Ask some kids you really don’t want but will fall back on if it doesn’t work out with the players you really do want, look at Alabama they’re taking the same approach. Other teams are saying let’s get while the getting is good. But most, not all of them are not in the position of USC or Bama.

        • CORTEZ THE KILLER

Ted Tollner could recruit, but he couldn’t coach, Gomer is a fatter Ted Tollner

          • Trojans 6942

You may turn out right. I’ll let you know after the season. What’s done with his assistants, but I think he can and is a good coach but needs experienced and stern assistants underneath him. Time will tell my man.

          • Gabby

Hey killer, is Tebone related to you, perhaps your other hand……the breath smells the same

        • gotroy22

Who wasn’t a proven recruiter as SC head coach?

          • Trojans 6942

No I saying Helton was. Tebow said he wasn’t which you said made good points. So I just said he did but not about recruiting. Sorry for the confusion I should’ve just texted Tebow but I didn’t want to look as if I was bashing him. We blog together all the time.

        • RegalTrojan

While I see where you’re coming from and I don’t think Helton is a terrible recruiter, you must give the SC brand most credit for the consistently strong recruiting of SC football team. Even with The Kiffer , Wino Sark , and the ridiculous NCAA sanctions, SC had pulled in top 3 to top 5 recruiting classes year in and year out. At SC, we’ll always get talent regardless of who the head coach might be because we’re SC. And as for Helton’s recent recruiting, it obviously shows too much emphasis on skill position players, which makes it put a less focus on the first-tier linemen to build the strong OL and DL that will be essential for our pursuit of something beyond winning our own conference in the future.

    • Cloud Shaman

I disagree with you on Lane Kiffin. He was set up to fail.

      • gotroy22

No he earned it all by his lonesome.

    • Pasadena Trojan

SC needs defensive and offensive linemen. 5 for each line are needed in this recruting class.

    • Gabby

“USC has dropped even further in the recruiting rankings, they are now sitting at #34.”

You sound like wolf, picking the lowest ranking you can find to fit your agenda, another example of confirmation bias, pathetic.

Scout has USC at #21, with 10 players committed, and an average star rating of 3.9(highest on the board). 247 sports has USC at #29, 10 players committed and an average player ranking of 91.95(3rd highest on the board) let’s look at one more Rivals, your choice. Ranked #34, 10 players committed, and a average star rating of 3.9(2nd highest on the board)

It’s obvious you have no idea how to interpret these rankings and what they are truly saying(low football IQ). Let me help you, the more players committed the more points you get. The top 10 team have an average of 19 to 24 players committed, which equals more points, higher ranking. With only 10 players committed, average star rating of 3.9. I would say they’re recruiting as good as any one

If you had a clue. You would know, Traditionally, USC is one of the best, if not the best, when it comes to closing at the end of the signing period.

      • Tebow_Obama

USC is #34 on Rivals and dropping fast.

        • Gabby

It’s only relevant to a troll like you.

I just gave you a massive crotch kick and you’re back for more…..were you dropped on your head as a baby or something close

          • Tebow_Obama

What’s your obsession with “crotches”? LOL

          • Gabby

            It’s a good area to inflict pain…..

        • B.Miller

USC has time before signatures are due.. I would not make a big deal out of recruiting rankings this early

    • Gabby

“USC has dropped even further in the recruiting rankings, they are now sitting at #34”

Let’s take a look at some numbers. Scout has USC at #21 with 10 players committed, average star rating of 3.9(highest on the board). 247 sports has USC at 29 with a average player rating of 91.95(3rd highest on the board)

    • Independent_George

The comments about the recruiting rankings was aggressively ignorant, and worthy of a “Wolfie Award”, which goes to the most misleading, misinformed, foolish and plainly trollish comment of the day. Congrats Tebow, you are the very first winner!

USC is 34 because they have only 10 hard commits. Rivals and Scout have a points based system that rewarsd quantity.
In “Star” rankings they are second. They will not be 34 at the end of the year.

You know who is 32 in Rivals’ ranking? Bama. If you believe that Bama’s 32nd ranking is predictive of its final ranking, than you have a nervous system less evolved than that of mosquito larvae.

As for the rest of your comment, TL;DR.

      • Gabby

Careful George, I left him a nice post regarding the ranking comment and he flagged it as inappropriate, it was removed. The speed of the removal leads me to believe he has some inside connections

Thanks for calling him out on his total lack of knowledge

  • Julio

Kenny B isn’t the first, or the last big time recruit who didn’t pan out. It comes with the business. At least he wasn’t caught shoplifting in China, Good luck Kenny!

  • StokaNoka

Big game to show recruits where they need to be moving forward. It’s all up to Helton and how he handles it. If they can sway Sewell and even just one of the Missouri DTs, that would be huge.

  • Pasadena Trojan

My question Scooter is this, why have you not brought up the idea that Kiffin was poaching on USC territory for Bigelow? That is an NCAA infraction. Where is the reporting? Oh, but it is necessary to rehash how Darnold saved the team, SC is not playing up to expectations, and the coaches are lousy. Play that record again.

  • Tebow_Obama

Expectations are getting lowered for the upcoming seasons with every passing year of Helton’s contract.

What QB is waiting in the wings to take over for Darnold when he leaves? Helton has no clue, he’s probably hoping that he gets lucky the way he did with Darnold. Helton coached Max Browne for 4 years, named him the starter and was completely wrong.

    • Gabby

Dude, quit acting like a d**K. We are all tired of your relentless BS. Your shtick would be better served on a “I hate USC” blog.

  • Tebow_Obama

Couple the fact that Helton not grooming Darnold’s replacement with the fact that USC is tanking in recruiting and you have the makings of a disastrous season next year…by then it will have been too late to have seen the writing on the wall about Helton not being up to the task to lead USC.

    • Gabby

Another sock puppet leading the blind
