Tee Martin Is Broyles Semi-Finalist

USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin made the latest cut for the Broyles Award, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach. That might infuriate you. But I suspect it does not make Martin happy either. He shares playcalling but since no one admits it to the public, he takes all the heat.

  1. it’s Bizarro World. Who in their right mind would see fit to award the the overall performance of our offense this year? No one who followed the team closely from week to week would bestow such an accolade on ANY of our assistant coaches or coordinators as being the best in the USA. What a joke!

  2. Never fails to amaze me. People are blind. This was one of the worst offensive performances in years (except Kiffin’s years) from start to finish. Must not have had any good candidates.

    • This is not correct.

USC is 14th in the nation in total offense.

USC is 5th in total first downs.

USC is 20th in passing offense.

USC is objectively and measurably better this year than in any of Sark’s or Kiffin’s years.

      • think what these stats would look like if some of the dropped balls, confounding penalties, etc. could be cleaned up. Mostly discipline.
We really need a secondary coach – our corners and safeties have by and large been terrible the last few years. When Colorado Sam has a career day in Boulder against the Trojans, you know something needs fixing.

    • Again you have no clue how well Tee and Ty get along/work together. As for Darnold, where would this team be if he cut his turnovers by at least half?

      • Sam’s fumbles are problematic and strange. It’s like Sam has freakishly small hands or something, but the INTs are the price of designing your offense around a QB who can make plays when the initial play is blown up.

Over on the Persistyle, RichSC, who knows much much more about football than Scottie, estimates that 1 out of 4 positive pass plays are Sam improvising after the called play and subsequent reads are blown up.

        • Yes after he makes his first read and it’s covered he gets happy feet. Again Sam needs a lot work but is a great talent.

          • Mainly do to offensive line troubles. Darnold, rightfully, has lost some confidence in his O line. Happy feet went down as he got more confident in the receiving corp and what remains of his happy feet, is a consequence of his O line not playing consistently.

      • 10-2, 11-1 at best. Darnolds turnover rarely cost SC the game. In fact, I remember a few interceptions came on 3rd down and Darnold gets picked off on a deep pass, ending with similar field position as a punt. When the game is on the line, and he taking more chances but needs to be perfect, I can remember one turnover in two years. His fumble in the open series of ND was costly as it set the tone for the game.

    • What does Tyson do that interferes with Martin? I don’t know anything about that, can you enlighten us? Martin will be leaving I hope, along with Bradford and the O line coach.

  3. Dumbfounded on this. SC did average over 35 points per game and 500 yards and that is all the voters saw. If they had seen every game, they would have not awarded this to him.

  4. There are 15 Simi-finalists for the Broyles Award.;

Alabama – Brian Daboll, Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Auburn – Kevin Steele, Defensive Coordinator

Clemson – Tony Elliot, Co–Offensive Coordinator, Running Backs

Georgia – Mel Tucker, Defensive Coordinator

Iowa State – Jon Heacock, Defensive Coordinator/Safeties

Miami – Manny Diaz, Defensive Coordinator

Mississippi State – Todd Grantham, Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers

Notre Dame – Mike Elko, Defensive Coordinator

Oklahoma – Bill Bedenbaugh, Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line

TCU – Chad Glasgow, Defensive Coordinator

UCF – Troy Walters, Offensive Coordinator

USC – Tee Martin, Offensive Coordinator/WR

Washington – Pete Kwiatkowski, Defensive Coordinator

Washington State – Alex Grinch, Defensive Coordinator / Secondary

Wisconsin – Jim Leonhard, Defensive Coordinator

  5. Great! If he wins, perhaps he will accept a position in SEC country, which is where he’s from. Then, maybe L. Swann can prevail on CH to hire a real OC, rather another friend or family member that is either over-the-hill or has little or no experience.

  6. Helton will probably win PAC 12 coach of the year. That outta drive you internet coaches crazy.

        • Conf record is not good but CAL is so improved from a year ago I think he has a real shot. If not him Leach is probably the winner. I think the criticism of Helton is overblown , but USC did not look impressive this year

      • I questioned Justin Wilcox when he was USC’s defensive coordinator, until I realized, his defense was left out to dry, because of Steve Sarkisian’s inability to keep his offense on the field

        • I think a lot of us were a bit too harsh on Wilcox–I now I succumbed to peer pressure and called for his dismissal. He has been successful everywhere he has been except USC. Being a bay area guy I like it when CAL does well. And when they do it makes the league stronger.

          • I agree, that’s one of the reasons why I want UCLA to hit a home run with their next hire, because it would force USC to step up their game, and also bring toughness to the conference

  7. And next year when all these immature/inconsistent players start to gel, this staff will look quite impressive. And careful what you wish for, if Martin goes, Tyson will be the offensive coordinator.

  8. writer is so rite! im infuriated, 15 poeple getting 1 reward??? smdh! but i geuss thats the times we live in, every one of these snowfalkes gets a trofee! gee thanks for riuning every thing drumpf!

    • According to a source, wolf was banned from the restroom at the 5 guys WOW!……..how bad must it have been?

I will check with the toilet crew(owns& killer) to get an update on this breaking news

  9. It just goes to show you that a lot of these pundits don’t know what they are talking about. I don’t know much about Kentucky U football or Mississippi State football but I know a lot about SC football because I follow it closely. Yet I hear a lot of commentators during the SC game on TV make statements that obviously show their ignorance and I’m sure all of you who follow SC closely would say “ditto to that”. Tee Martin is a good recruiter and I have always thought that he is a good receivers coach but when it comes to play calling, he’s not in the same universe with the really good ones like Norm Chow. Maybe he will be someday, but not today.

  10. Hey wolf, you just took a massive double crotch kick followed by three uppercuts to the chin…..OUCH!!!

No worries, beefcakes is on the scene to comfort the wolfman…..true love

  11. Good exposure for the program. My feeling is he leaves for Tennessee in some capacity. I just wish clay would define roles and let whoever is offensive coordinator to call all plays and be QB coach, and not half the duties up to his brother. No one good is going to want the job, if they don’t have control of the plays and the quarterback

    • I always thought Mark Helfrich was a good OC at Oregon before taking over the HC duties. He’s presently an analyst for FS1

  12. Broyles award….an elite coach in the same league and era as Paul Bryant, Bud Wilkinson, John McKay…wonder what Broyles would think of these candidates for this award with his name on it.
