Morning Buzz: USC Is Champions Of The Golden State By The Way

UCLA Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen #3 is in the grasp of USC Trojans linebacker Cameron Smith #35 but manages to get away from him and USC Trojans tight end Austin Applebee #89 in the 4th quarter. Someone at USC is really straining to think of accolades for the Trojans. USC coach Clay Helton praised the senior year class after the UCLA game by saying, “They’ve now won a city and state title this year.”

A state title? Since when did beating UCLA, Stanford and Cal merit being called state champs? Is this 1925? Is Pop Warner coaching at Stanford? Did beating Justin Wilcox mean that much? Is Helton feeling some heat and adding another accomplishment to winning the prestigious Pac-12 South?

Mater Dei or De La Salle win a state title. Not USC.

Meanwhile, here’s my column on UCLA and Chip Kelly, which may or may not happen.

Wolf: UCLA will need to make football No. 1 to hire Chip Kelly

  1. Maybe we should have a California College Football Playoff, SC v SDSU, Stanford v Fresno St. Then we would have a true State Champ!
So, today, the Pac 12 is so super competitive, Chip Kelly would have trouble getting easy wins and should go to another conference.
If USC doesn’t win the CCG it will be a debacle since they have a super advantage with the bye. That will be Wolf’s narrative, SC won a game it should have or lost a game it had a huge advantage.

    • If they don’t win league, then many a head need to roll, maybe even Helton’s. Next year, I will spend over $5,000 for tickets, renovation, and C&G, while USC moves my seats due to my area is a lay down area. To spend that money, we better get better result. SC treats this as a business, so should the fans. This year we got shoddy product. Swann better know this.

      • Yet you’re still going to spend $5000+ next year to see the same thing in worse seats !

    • When Kelly was in Oregon the PAC 12 was worse than now, and it’s not that much better now

      • My point, Wolf has been claiming the Pac 12, especially the South is so weak, today it is so strong Kelly will struggle. Which is it?

        • Wolf cited WSU, UDUB and Stanford as being better as well as USC, that’s not exactly touting the strength of the PAC 12 South

        • Killer is the #1 troll on this blog. We all laugh at him.
He’s anti-USC, but goes across as having a general concern…..pathetic

          PS…nice crotch kick

  2. Wolf’s headline had me thinking”oh wow, something positive”, but I was wrong again. Does Helton feel the same way about you that you feel about him Wolf? You never had such an easy job, good thing you are not in Alabama, Saban would chew you up and spit you out.

      • Helton was chewed up, spat out, stomped on and taken to the woodshed…that was embarrassing.

  3. It appears UCLA is taking football much more serious then USC, but I hope they don’t hire Chip Kelly, and opt for somebody that would bring toughness to a soft conference

  4. Not to nitpick, but isn’t it properly phrased “USC Be Da Champions”? Don’t worry Scott, you still is champions here!

  5. I think Helton was trying to be witty. Unfortunately he’s no McKay or Robinson 1 or Pete in any way, shape or form.

  6. If Helton wants to claim a state title, then I’m sure Fresno State and SDSU fans might take offense to that. The Bulldogs are at eight wins and the top of their conference and played Bama this year. SDSU is 9-2 with two wins over Pac-12 schools and the nation’s leading rusher with 1800+ yards, more than Bryce Love and Saquon Barkley.

Those are two competitive teams right now and I wouldn’t bet against them with the way USC has been playing lately. USC wouldn’t be a lock to get past them with their own inconsistent and sloppy play.

I’m not so sure USC won a “California state title” this year.

    • The title you’re referring to, doesn’t exist [and never will exist] —-so nobody won it or ever will win it. Scott is right: Best to only claim titles that exist.

      • I know there was no title to claim.

Was being a little tongue in cheek while throwing FSU and SDSU’s year in there.

    • Looks like the Cali schools are doing pretty well as whole this year. Gotta look on the positive side.

    • Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach is 6-6, and still in CIF playoffs. They would have a better claim to a State title than Helton’s Trojans.

  7. It’s worth mentioning that he is the winningest head coach since Pete Carroll left. Or he’s the winningest head coach over the past 10 seasons. That does sound really good. Or really bad for SC.

  8. Just saw an interview with the DL recruit Trout. He seems like a very nice, well spoken young man, hopefully he can come in and help the DL

    • Oxy probably had as many legit wins as SC before it shut the program down this year. Might be the perfect place for Helton and staff next year. If Bama can play Mercer, what’s wrong with the Trojans scheduling Oxy ?

  9. All references to USC ever winning a city title should be burned and forgotten. Beating the little gutties is great but speaking of a “city title” was a very poor choice of words by Helton. He probably doesn’t know about the big but laughable City Champions sign that used to hang at the bruin practice field.

Helton is still feeling his way around and remains behind the curve in this area. His public pollyanna approach to USC problems also needs to change or he’ll continue to lose credibility when addressing legit questions from the media.

    • Never played a full game of football in 2017 where the fans could be proud and confident.

    • Helton has plenty of losses at home, he was the offensive coordinator under the other flunkies Kiffin and Sarkisian. Come to think of it, Helton has to share in the blame for the losses on the road while under those two clowns as well.

  10. So what happens if Stanford makes it to the PAC 12 title game and beats USC? Will Helton have won and lost the state title in the same year?

Helton lost the state title last year in the third game of the season 27-10 to Stanford, probably why he wanted to stake claim to it this year so quick, just in case he has a chance of losing it again in the PAC 12 title game.

So Helton could end up 1-1 in state title games in the same year, makes about as much sense as his coaching…it doesn’t.

  11. Helton doesn’t want to stake claim to all the losses he helped rack up as a member of Kiffin and Sarkisian’s coaching staff dating back to 2010, but I’m keeping track. Like when Helton went 4-5 after taking over for Sarkisian, that year he lost to twice to Stanford.

    • I saw that! SMU is for real! Should be an electric atmosphere next week! I’m sure Galen will be at/near capacity!
