The State Champs Debate Cont.

I don’t recall Pete Carroll ever touting being state champs. Maybe because he was always focused on bigger goals.

  1. PC was all about playing anyone anywhere, competing, setting high goals and not being satisfied with settling

    • Will you carry on the same mentality once promoted to executive custodian at the 5 guys?

      PS…I like the new PT.

  2. So Helton has accomplished something that has not been done since 2008– namely, beating Stanford, Cal and SUCLA in the same season

I don’t favor changing head coaches unless there is someone out there who is available and who is obviously better than Helton.

So name the guy who is best all you football-brilliant SC football posters

      • Love it, now you’ll get snarky response. They have no answer because every name they proposed 2 years ago Helton has beat.

        • Helton must be pretty good or UCLA wouldn’t be looking to pay a well known pain in the butt
coach 5 million a year to try to beat him.

    • I’m your Huckleberry.

BTW, I don’t believe we should fire Helton. Here is a short list of coaches to consider if he royally screws up next season.

      Dave Aranda – LSU
      Jeremy Pruitt – Alabama
Del Rio if he gets fired
Tony Elliott – Clemson (I don’t think he will ever leave).
      And possibly Jeff Fisher.

If Helton is smart he should steal Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma or Tony Elliott Clemson right now for OC and get rid of his brother.

  3. Jeez scott, let it go. Seriously, let it go. The horse is dead, stop kicking.
If you don’t like him just say so.. oh yea, you did for the six thousandth time.
Unlike you he has a real family, if nothing else give them the weekend off.

    • Sounds like a bad case of OCD. It’s not just the wolfman. A few others around here are in the same boat

      • Cortez, too is a no good troll, just pretending to be concerned about the SC football program. No more no less. There are reasonable people all over the place on this blog that don’t use deceit or slanderous statements to make their case. Those I can respect.

          • He used to pretend he was grad. But that too went by the wayside. Then he said he had daughters who ran xcountry, and he contradicted that too. I could go on and on, but why.

          • Nothing but a fraud. How he thinks he could do a better job coaching the team than Helton, that’s how warped the guy is

He’s one of my main punching bags

          • Ed Garrett went off on josh rosen on the Bruin blog. The one about Rosen’s goodbye to mora. Funny.

          • It was a 2 man show, Pudly —and you were half of it. [I’m really kinda hoping Mora or Rosen responds —-that would be so tight].

  4. Anyone catch the pirate’s (Leach) statements on what to expect when your getting married? Stupid funny.

  5. My buddy telling me Kelly to UCLa . I’m sure some will feast negatively, but I was never a Kelly fan. I think he’s a jerk who ran a gimmick offense in a place where he had total control. That won’t happen at ucla.

    • That’s would be surprising. Florida has less income taxes and it’s the SEC. Kelly would make more money and have more opportunities out there than a second rate program like ucla that has only 1 national championship.

  6. Pete Carroll suddenly left USC in the lurch 2 1/2 weeks before LOI Day in 2010. USC lost 30 scholarships, two years of bowls and the SR’s and JR’s on the team were allowed to transfer immed without having to sit out a year.

Including the 2010 season, The Kiffer’s first year, until now, these are the overall records of the Calif schools:

    1. STAN 83-21 (.798)

    2. USC 72-32 (.692)

    3. ucla 56-46 (.549)

    4. CAL 39-58 (.402)

USC’s record against each school during same period:

    vs STAN 3-5
    vs ucla 5-3
    vs CAL 8-0

    • Some would say the losing of those jr and sr players hurt as much as the scholie reductions.

      • Our mini-rival is all shot up now about the prospects of CK revitalizing the little gutties with his now routinely run no huddle O. Glad the Trolls now have something to bark about and take their minds off the crushing 28-23 teaser on Saturday!

        • On the money. CK’s gimmicks are now dated. He will soon reveal himself as a .550 winning percentage coach for the bRuins – and they can’t expect to dip into Wasserman’s pocket every 5 years for a new HC. It will say something about CK if he passes over a good job in FLA for the mediocre job in Westwood.

  7. Scott,
You conveniently forget that Pete repeatedly stated that each season the goal was to win the conference and let the rest take care of itself.
How different is that to this years team which is one win away from winning the conference?

  8. Maybe because Stanford routinely beat Carroll. Esp on the later years. I seem to remember a certain 41 point favorite Trojan team and a certain Tavita Pritchart. And “What’s you deal??”

  9. I actually think fact trumps opinion. While I feel USC should win every game, I know it doesn’t happen anywhere. I don’t care if some call me a sunshine pumping rah rah. I like a win by 1 point as much as I like a win by fifty points. Football appeals to me because it has many different elements. Some just see bodies bashing together . I see

    • Smashing ucla by 50 or squeaking by the little gutties by 5 are the best ways to win. The middle of the road stuff isn’t nearly as good as torturing the baby bruins – like The Kiffer did 50-0 or Helton did last Sat, 28-23.

      • Like the Bush Push game where nd went ahead with almost no time left and the stadium was going nuts, the leprechaun doing his thing, and all of a sudden, like the whole stadium had the oxygen sucked right out of it.

        He who dances last…

  10. Was listening to ESPNU radio today . Kanell was saying how stupid it was that USC fans wouldnt be happy with Helton bsed on the teams progression this year. Hmm!

  11. I don’t see how Miami is ranked 2nd. I’m missing something, but can’t put a finger on it. Within their conference they are ranked 7th in defense and 6th in offense. I think they are getting to much credit for beating ND the way they did. ND is not that good. The Canes beat Virginia Tech, who I think is 4-3 in conference and ND. That’s it. Personally, I think Clemson cleans their clock when they play.

    • 1) MIA is undefeated.
      2) MIA is a huge brand name.
      3) USC made ND look like an all-world NC team. Remember that sucker. They did whatever, whenever they wanted.
      4) People like Mark Richt. Very popular coach. Subjective factor.
      5) Committee likes defending NC CLEM a lot and they lost to lowly SYRA. You gonna rank an undefeated MIA team behind CLEM. No. Not for now at least.
      6) MIA destroyed #8 ND, a super-hyped game because of the old Catholics vs Convicts deal. Everyone bought into MIA because they won the big GameDay game that counted in grand style.
      7) It’s a crazy year. I think there’s a lot of confusion over who’s gonna be top 4 in the end. Nobody looks great. The undefeateds like ALA, MIA and WIS (another team that has beat no one) all look like they could probably lose and that’s three of the top five teams. It’a gonna be a wild controversial finish I think. Should be fantastic!

      • Lots of games will be like a playoff. 8 of the top ten playing this week are on the road. Should be fun!

        • You bet. Bedlam’s coming, SC’s too far back to take advantage but there’s some great scenarios that are gonna play out.

          • I think it’s possible, especially if we don’t have over 100 yds in penalties a game and have to relive this team’s weird way of keeping opponents in it until the end.

Winning ugly, our identity, could keep us out of the top 5 I think. But if we can come up with another one of those spectacular nail biter endings, that could get us included!

          • Realistically, Jack I meant after the bowl game. But their have been weirder things have happened.

      • Jack, good stuff, but I think you forgot just one more reason, and maybe the most important one, their east of the Mississippi and south of the mason/dixon line.

  12. Pete didn’t tout state championships because he won the Pac-12 championship like 8 years in a row. Clay Helton is in his second season and before winning his first of probably 20 consecutive Pac-12 championships he’s thumbing it in your eyes that he’s got a state championship, and fans, it wasn’t even close this state championship season.
