Clay Helton On Chip Kelly

USC coach Clay Helton spoke for the first time about UCLA’s hiring of Chip Kelly:

“I think it’s great for our conference. I think it brings a great amount of respect to our league. I think it’s a good thing.”

  1. I think Wolf is making fun of me. I think Wolf is a jerk. I think USC will still kick their rears.

  2. Respect ?? The guy got caught cheating at Oregon !!!!!!!!!!

Gomer, please please resign and go work for the boy scouts or some youth ministry

      • The Foul Tip Chimp vs Show Cause Chip.

Fun to watch ucla’s desperation ratchet up as they waddle in their mid-major status for years.

        • Absolutely – coach after coach, it really doesn’t matter. They are a .500 club. And will be again under CK.

        • It’s fun to watch UCLA hire the most successful coach in Pac 12 history and have you bozos help pay for it!
Thanks for loading the gun we will use (metaphorically of course) to shoot you down. Welcome to L.A. Coach Kelly!

          • Heard of fuzzy math but fuzzy football history, must be a public school? Most successful coach run out by show cause, maybe that’s what you mean. Because “no championship” kelly doesn’t qualify.

      • I remember when they hired Mora, he was from the nfl and really was going to take ucla to the promised land. ucla’s best seasons were when USC was sanctioned.

      • Aw, I love all the upvotes you got. Each upvote represents = 1,000 jealous trOJan fans. Keep ’em coming.

Did you see Chip hit a home run in his first presser (right after making a splash on the recruiting trail with 5* CB Radley-Hiles)? The media already loves him!

        #BoomBoom

        • jealous of ucla? are you trying out for the comedy improv? what is to be jealous of?
Another new coach who got canned from his last two jobs? Ya, I am jealous.

    • Bruins love talking about next season or down the road, because today Clay Helton is the Rose Bowl champion, coaching in the Pac-12 championship game and is 3-0 vs. UCLA, and UCLA is firing their head coach the day after the USC game for the 2nd straight time. Tradition.

      • Probably no team can beat SC’s record for Head Case coaching turnover. Was it 5 in 3 years??
Make no mistake, we are glad you haven’t fired Helton. Maybe you’ll wait until this time next year….
The buzz is already all about UCLA football and if you don’t be Furd you may be firing your coach this year.
Right Swanny? …… Swanny? Anyone seen Swanny?

        • It’s always a special treat to see ruins that are upbeat this time of year. Just doesn’t happen very often. Must be a new coach in town again..

          • That buzzin is in your head, remember what the doctor said, stop banging your head and it will go away

          • We’re always upbeat at the beginning of basketball season, dummy.
A Basketball is that larger round ball that few Trojans pay any attention to. Although I can’t blame you there.

  3. to me clay helton needs to realize the line you can come to usc wont work anymore when chip Kelly says you can come play for me! USC needs to get on the horse and really start recruiting. they have 14 spots left. if people think Kelly not going to do anything and everything he possible can to get himself some talent your mistaken. he was running the table with 3 and 4 star talent. helton struggles with 4 and 5 star talent. Kelly going to nfl only gonna get him 4 and 5 star talent if he starts to win in the first two seasons USC is toast. swann needs to pull the trigger on forst asap he needs to make public he is not happy with USC football and that he maybe making some changes soon this might ignite a fire in helton if not you get rid of him.

      • they got a lot of recruits his first year. they even took 4 or 5 of our recruits like eddy and fritts. two very solid guys we could have used. what do you think Kelly gonna do.

      • they have 10 solid commitments and 1 commitment used from last year 25 scholarship available means we have 14 left.

        • Wrong, not even close. How many seniors are leaving? How many transfer out? How many to the nfl early? Figure it out. Coach.

          • That’s just the point. I don’t try to win. I just want to point out he’s not who/what he says he is.
The whole thing with Bama recruiting.. they’re just like us, they close late.

          • Like many, you can choose either, many of our kids were offered and recruited y Bama, but they still came here. And that will be the case this year again.

          • that’s as of now and your correct that can all change once the season is over we are talking now. and for sc 25 now then lets see how jr leave early?? question do you waste them now or go to next year??

          • No 25 is wrong. Teams do not get 25 every year, if they did they would end up with more than 85 limit.

      • if we were a good solid program we would have 5 left not 14. look at Alabama, maimi, or Clemson they each have 5 left all solid programs. my guess is we finish maybe top 15 nationally on recruits. that’s not good enough for sc.

        • Alabama only has two more commitments than we do. If you were smart you’d look before crossing… none the less, they have 14 spots left give or take.
My question was not about them, it was about how you think we have 14 left, how many total will we get? You don’t have a clue yet? How many commits do we have? You don’t have a clue..
Oops forgot, you were d-1 player and a coach at d-1 2x national championship team… yeah right

          • Wrong again, teams can use up to 25 if they have openings, but do we? You see you’re wrong again.

          • Wrong, how many on the roster, big boy? How many seniors.. look you’re way off. I’m tired of trying to walk you through this.

          • Silly goose, this is something most coaches know…. what’s up? Why does bama only get 20 and we get 25? Hmm, maybe you don’t know, funny thing is don’t know is the right answer!!! Haha because ALL the experts are stumped still, except to know that it is a small class.

          • Be had 25 lost 5 from last year. When you over commit players with scholarships you cab use them towards your next year. Ie that why one year bama got I think 32 I could be wrong and that was cause they had some left o we from the year before

        • Have you ever paid attention on LOI day? USC goes in with the most open scholies and ends up top 5. Relax, remember this is a dual LOI year, it is new for everyone.

          • The chances of signing 5 star recruits that are left is slim to none so maybe we end up at 10 at best still not good enough

    • Just like Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. He was going to win National Championships, but eventually settled for the Kansas job along with a box of XXXXXL sweaters left by Mark Mangino.

    • We have been sitting here waiting on Swann to pull the pin. What happened, Swann didn’t talk to you about it? Any minute now right? Swann still have all the replacements all lined up? We are waiting.

      • Swann will do what’s correct for usc football. I said from the beginning it’s either Helton or Martin to go. Now Helton trying to get Martin’s name on tenn hc list. This will allow him to try to place his little brother as oc. Don’t you see the writting on the wall. Just wait swann will come public when the time is right

  4. Enough about Chip Kelly — DON’T WE HAVE A BIG GAME IN A FEW DAYS?! I am worried because this game feels a lot like that bowl game we played against Wisconsin with Helton at the helm and laid an egg. Or the first 3 Qs against PSU before Darnold came in to save the day. More time for Helton usually just means the team gets softer — less focused…until there is an emergency. We’re going to need urgency from the first snap on this Friday.

    • Funny that the biggest news in Pac 12 football is Chip Kelly. Your game with Furd is second page news. If you want to see the future, just check out the youtube of Kelly’s press conference today.
      Then compare him with Helton.
Good luck against Furd, we want you to keep Helton for a few more years.

      • Yeah, problem is, you guys got all excited on the days you hired NeuWeasel and Mora too. But it is no accident that you haven’t won a Rose Bowl since 1988 or a National Championship EVER (that 1954 thing is disputed!). Ole Chippy ain’t changing that with a system everybody has adjusted too, or reinventing the game for a second time in one career. By the time he’s done, at best, he’ll be just another 8-4 Bruin coach with a lot of Holiday Bowl losses under his belt.

        • Actually, Kelly is the one cashing the check and thanks to SoCal Alumni for helping cover the tab.

  5. to Coach Helton, you said the correct things in public. I am hoping you are taking on a different point of view privately and with your staff and players. It is time to put on your big boy pants and get ready to rumble.

  6. I think that it is good for USC. Either we will find that Kellys best days are in the past and the Bruins will have to spend another 25 million to hire another coach or he’ll make the bruins great and they’ll start beating SC every year and Max will finally see the writing on the wall…..namely that you can’t win natties hiring entry level coaches at entry level pay.

    • I’m guessing it will be the latter but first Swanny will have to say or do something at some point. Does he often come to campus?

      • The real question is….does Swann have the authority? If he does, I don’t think Helton will be there for long unless he proves that he has the ability to win a NC. Swann will not stand for an SC team that goes 10-3 every year but never gets into the playoffs. But does he have any real authority or is he just a mouthpiece parroting the wishes of Max.

    • You forgot the third and most likely option, ruins spend $25 mil on lawyers because show cause forgot the rules again

      • In within a week the ruins have spent $37 million on two losers. Kelly will be around 500 in winning and won’t get anywhere. That is a lot of money to be blown. Good, it is their money and not USC’s

      • I guess that might be a possibility but I would think that UCLA would read him the riot act about his past infractions before they hired him.

  7. Sas, too bad your initials aren’t S.U.S. Then your initials would stand for, Straight Up Sam cause you call it like you see it, bro.

  8. I agree. Good for ucla. At least, on the surface. Anything that can revive either SC or ucla football (no, SC, we’re hardly “there” yet) is better for the PAC and LA.

    Fight On!

  9. Well, Thanks SAS, it’s great to be back and isn’t a glorious day?!?
“A little light?” Yeah, like an atom bomb is a little light.
Did you see Kelly’s presser? Can you feel what’s coming, Jr?
While you did finally manage to tie Mora after beat downs during his first three years, even the most delusional SoCal Homer (ie you) has to understand what’s coming down the track.
First, Chip assembles a coaching staff you can only dream about with Helton as HC, then he takes dominates recruiting in LA and eats your lunch.
P.S. Thanks for helping us pay for the Kelly bomb we are going drop on you. (metaphorically of course).

  10. I can understand the excitement UCLA fans feel right know, because it was a good hire, and does raise the profile of the conference, and certainly quickly deflects all the bad news over there lately, but I don’t understand the need to come over to a rival blog, and gloat about what you think might happen. How about actually backing it up, first, and then celebrate with your own peeps. Makes too much sense, I guess. Congrats for the hope it gives you. It’s a start
