Pac-12 Quick Thought

Larry Scott said last night he called the president of Fox to complain about truck racing sending Pac-12 games to Fox Sports 2. Well, now we know why Scott makes $4 million a year.

    • Well I get the animus about other matters but you all should be very grateful we had all eyes on that victory last night – all eyes across the USA and that is a lot of potential recruits.

  1. Why didn’t Scott come back and say that he will move the championship game to Saturday at 1 PM. The PAC 12 game was better than the hillbillies that are playing now

    • Because he understood the mess of today – right now the Big 10 and ACC are playing simultaneously.

Does anyone really believe, anyone was watching all the top tier games today? Right now on the east coast at 11 o’clock at night?

I am so glad we played last night – every gin mill from SLC to NYC had our game against Stanford on all night last night in their bars – all eyes were either watching that or the cute waitress serving them drinks and I can assure you a significant % were watching our triumph over Stanford – fight on!

National focus on a USC victory!

      • The nice thing about having more than one game on is if one of them sucks, like today you can switch to the other.

    • ESPN was showing 2 basketball games during that time. Guess they couldn’t drop the PAC-12 in that slot.

  2. Thats because hillbillies would rather watch truck racing instead of pac 12 after dark, and there’s more hillbillies than pac 12 fans.

In other news, Oregon loses 4 star athlete commit because of “coaching uncertainty”. This is something USC DOES NOT have. What say you Wolfie?

  3. Great and smart move holding the Pac-12 CCG last night – complete national attention across the entire nation. People are busy during the day in most of the USA after Thanksgiving due to shorter days – out and about. This was the sole smart move made by Scott and I’d bet other conferences might be wishing they had last night all to themselves.

  4. Gary Danielson was saying committee should disregard the CCG and just take bama, what a shill, maybe he knows Auburn losing big hurts bama’s chances.

      • No question someone is going to be really upset before it is over. Don’t forget 9am on espn.

      • And if tOSUwins a squeaker, doesntheir less than stellar showing in last years playoffs come into consideration, along with the expanded television revenue by including the west coast representatives? Hmmm, nah.

        • I didn’t think I’d be saying this after the Notre Dame game —but— a healthy USC would be trouble for any of the 4 teams going to the playoffs.

          • I think a bye before Notre Dame would have evened things up considerably. And fair officiating would have done the rest.
            USC 35, Notre Dame 34.
            P.S.
And after the game Helton would’ve said, “we could have beaten them worse if we wanted to.”

    • If Alabama gets in, the playoffs must be expanded to eight teams next year……all conference champions get an automatic invite

        • One more game, why not. You basically have four weeks from the CCG games to the first CFP, as it is now. Start the first round two weeks after the CCG, then play the second round a week later. Give the final two teams a couple of weeks to prepare. Works out to the same time frame currently in place.

More games equals more revenue for the networks. Bigger payouts to the conferences

        • No, Arturo. I look at the beginning of December and say to myself, “why aren’t there 2 more weeks of college football? You call this America?”

      • They won’t – the networks learned from the 2012 BCS final when AL clubbed LSU 21 – 0. Their Nielsen ratings were awful – i.e. did you watch it? I didn’t and the non-SEC is what the viewing audience is all about for a national broadcast

        • The BCS was doomed from the beginning. It only added to the controversy. The AP poll proved it

          • Yeah and the sweetest deal was when the AP crowned us as ‘National Champs’ over LSU in 2004 and ever better was when the BCS/CFP controlled by the SEC, moved to ‘pull’ in the AP as one of their ‘sources’ for rankings and the AP told the BCS/CFB to shove it up their back ends.

          • The AP pretty much gave them the middle finger.(Ha Ha!) At some point, I would like to see the playoffs expanded, Conference champions, plus three at-large teams.

The one hang-up may be the criteria used to determine the at-large teams

          • Actually Gab the current set-up works best – 4 although some would argue for 6 with the lowest ranked four in a ‘play-in’ but there seems to be little movement to expand which makes all the teams win each and every week unlike the NFL which counts on losses

  5. Larry Scott didn’t give the full story on his “phone call” to Fox. According to unnamed sources, he did have his secretary dial Fox’s listed number. Unfortunately, she got a busy tone. By the time she rang Larry back, he was asleep.

    • Mike why the sarcasm? We had the entire focus last night on our conference. It was a lot better than competing for ‘eyes’ today – what the other 4 games plus the lower 5 on throughout Saturday?

I concur Scott is weak and overpaid but last night was special – lead report across America per college football regardless of the conference this year, justifiably, getting hosed – last night was all ours!

      All Ours USC!

      • All true, Alv. [I’d just like to be able to cancel Spectrum and be able to get the Pac 12 Network on Direct TV —-and I blame Larry]…..
        #LarryIsMyEnemy

        • Well why you’re at it – rag on Andrew Friedman and the Lakers because they’re all in the same basket of greed and incompetence.

Look I get the frustration of the truly inept negotiating skill exhibited by Scott but give a ‘clap out’ when something is of gain.

That lousy deal also impacts all the other Pac-12 teams then again I have no idea if the Direct TV rejection is throughout their entire service area (CO, AZ, UT, WA, OR and No. CA).

Like the fight in WI but OH St. just looks more prepared same with Clemson over Miami – this is why I am so glad we played last night – you think we would have had those national eyes on our game? We would not – ‘blank’ the naysayers who mock Scott on this move – it was gold for USC last night! It’s 11 o’clock in NYC

          • We’re probably gonna wind up facing Wisconsin in the Fiesta, Alv —and we’re gonna wipe ’em out. They are really slow.
(I’m not inclined to sympathize on the Larry Scott front, though —-it’s not worth dealing with Spectrum just to get two Pac 12 Network USC games a year. Next year I’m just gonna miss the USC games on Pac 12 Network and switch to DirectTV —and I reserve the right to be cursing that little dweeb Larry Scott on those two Saturdays)….

          • I’m with Direct TV right now and I have no problem with their service nor their position. Next year is year 3 in the lousy Pac-12 deal.

Again consider the Dodgers and their greed now going into year 4 of having only <30% of LA market share…same with the Lakers. My sole regret is that the LAA didn't team up with the Ducks and/or Kings on a 'shared' cable feed. That fat overweight slob Pujols and his porcine profile – nothing but a complete train wreck courtesy of Arte Moreno who 'knew' (just like Jimmy Buss knew) there was nothing to putting a team together.

            'blank' fat Albert

          • Thanks, Arturo. I’m gonna look into that. Forgive my ignorance, but do you have any problems with reception on windy days? —-we have high winds in Maui all the time.

          • Internet has been kinda a nightmare for me since I landed in Maui, steveg (sort of a blessing —cuz it forces me to do more painting and drawing).

          • I think Dish and Direct have similar setups.
Don’t have problems with weather. I live in a hilly area with winds as well.

          • Hi Michael i have Dish her in Northern Ca. and we have a strong winter winds here about 2 weeks a year and i have no problems

          • How many people outside of CA watched it, and how many went out shopping or do dinner, it was Friday night. I think you are over hyping the Friday thing, I don’t care for it when there are some really good high school games going on, CIF finals. So I understand your point about exposure, but if someone really wanted to watch it they would, Friday or Saturday and there is the dvr also.

          • For a little context check out Jon Wilner in the Mercury News. He details the rating #s for Sat vs Friday night championship games. Friday night #s dwarf the Sat #s. Friday night games are seen by more people than Sat and bring more $ to the league. The PAC-12 messes up a lot of things. Playing championship game on Fri night isn’t one of them

  6. On Channel 7 News, Helton whined that bozo FB deserve a berth in the playoffs. Funny, funny. Not one team currently in line for a bid has lost 49 – 14.

    • But OSU lost 55-24… to an unranked team. They’re in line to jump Bama for the last spot if they win tonight. Hmmm

      • Good point; so Ohio St lost by 31 and bozo u lost by 35. I find it hard to believe Ohio St was as hyped vs Iowa, as bozo u was hyped to engage ND. You know, according to bozo Rah – Rah’s, it’s the greatest bozo u rivalry.

        Tonight it’s # 8 Ohio St vs #3 Wisconsin.

Last night it was #11 bozo u vs #14 Sanford. The bozo win has been characterized as “bozo u held on to win the Pac- 12 Championship.

        • Hey Bruin Rob, now that The Chipster has taken over for The CHIMP, what are the chances the gutless ones snap the decade of dominance that Stanford has on you?

    • Hey was cheating chip on the news too? No. Oh well, maybe in 6 months or so, when’s media day..

    • Hey Bruin Rob, how does it fell knowing that USC has won more games in one year than ucla has in one season? Inquiring minds want to know.

  7. If Larry Scott had a boss instead of a committee, he would have been fired already. When he leaves the new guy will have to do a Trump and fix everything.

  8. Who dressed Gus Johnson, his jacket looks like material from a patio cushion….just saying

  9. I’m thinking maybe it would be nice to break tradition and play Miami. Then we could beat two teams that beat nd, and it would be great for recruiting

          • Good game. Give us an idea where we are as a program! And give us good exposure in the south

          • If Alabama doesn’t go, then who jumps them? Yes, UGA will. But OSU would have to move up 4 places AND jump Alabama. I just don’t see that. I think Alabama and UGA both basically move up 1 place as Auburn slides down. I think OSU moves up right behind UGA/Alabama at #5 giving the SEC two teams in the CFP.

    • Some sites are predicting USC/Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, on the assumption Alabama goes to the playoffs.

          • I don’t know? Just thought I’d heard that once the Rose Bowl was off the table, the committee had the right to move teams around for the benefit of the bowls.

          • Like I said in an earlier post, Pudly, check out “Land of Ten Bowl Projections.” The match ups listed there seem to back up your point…..

      • If Bama goes there will be angry outburst like we’ve not seen, especially with 3 teams from 1 region and a 3rd place team from one conference. Unbelievable!

        • It would be pretty hard to stomach —-but, having said that, I sure don’t want to see us matched up against Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. Saban will be outta his mind.

          • Yes, honestly. [And assume Rector, Gustin, Green, Lockett and Tuipulotu are all cleared to play —-but you needn’t assume that Bigelow un-retires…or that Boermeester is welcomed back]…….

          • I’m assuming at this point that tuipolutu will not be back before next year and we’ll be lucky to get him that quick.

          • Okay, then it’s hard for me to ever pick against the boys, and this time there’s no ex coaches to give him a scouting report or game plan. Also the ONLY pro style type team they played was Auburn and I think our qb is better, so I think we could and should make a game of it.

I must be crazy to say it aloud.

  10. If we get Wisconsin in the Fiesta Bowl, we’ll kill ’em. No team speed.
No way they are gonna be able to stay with Jojo, Carr, Pittman and Vaughns. They’ll be two 12-2 teams after it’s over.

    • I hope we won’t – I hope we’ll get PA St. in Tempe – matchups and dates due tomorrow 12 noon

      • It could happen, Alv —but I keep reading everywhere that the Bowls generally prefer to stay away from re-matches.

        • Hmm I don’t know an awful lot of ‘drama’ that would ‘hover’ over said re-match…..a chance for Franklin to show his skilll…I’d garner PA St. is foaming at the mouth to get a chance at a re-match.

Only good thing about seeing Miami get waxed by Clemson is knowing the Irish realize how overrated they were regardless of the awful butt whipping they handed us….

          • That’s where my son is seeing it. And they’re seeing it on Monday! … (but this is OUR playoff system —-and we get to call the day—so I say it’s Sunday for them today, too—- whether they like it or not)…..
            #FairIsFair

        • Yup – sure wish it were PA St…..WI looks like a team that never faced a solid team in that pathetic Big 10 West (MN, WI, NE, IA, IL, Northwestern & MD) until this evening.

          What a mess

      • True, Pete. Let’s play our game for a change. Not try to beat the opposition by one score.

  11. You know, I thought Thomas Hansen was about the poorest conference commissioner there ever was with his ignorance about staying with the times. But Larry Scott is such a bonehead and failure in most things he tries to accomplish.
