USC Tweet Of The Day

I actually had some pushback on twitter for this comment. People resent that I mention how great Sam Darnold is because they want more credit for Clay Helton.

  1. Congratulations on SC Winning the PAC. I had my doubts, but they for the the most part knew how to finish games…Fight On!

  2. No not for Clay Helton necessarily, but for the rest of his teammates. Plus, Sam helped pull out some games but his poor play at times put us in the hole as well.

  3. O.k. let me ask you this Scottie. Would Auburn be where they’re at without Jerrod Stitham, or OU without Baker Mayfield? It’s like my grandfather used to say, If aunt Mary had balls she’d be uncle Tom.

  4. Does Alabama win without Hurts?
    Does Chokelahoma win without Mayfield?
Does Ohio St. win without Barrett?
    Do pigs fly?
Isn’t this the point of recruiting? Get great players that win games for you?

  5. You’ll do anything to foment discord and set Helton against even the kids who love playing for him. Choose a side? Helton or Darnold? Really?

    • U gotta go with Helton. He is the coach and darnold is a player who will move on

  6. I would like to propose a new rule for the “USC tweet of the day”: It cannot be your OWN tweet.

    Does everyone agree?

    • Agreed. Of course, Sam is a great player, but we lost a couple of games this year in significant part because of Sam’s turnovers. They were ugly. And there’s a player out there nicknamed ROJO who is a hell of a player – he erases a lot of mistakes. And Nuwosu coming off the edge ended a bunch of drives. Don’t put it all on Sammy. Great kid and really good QB. But your little nonsense play of putting a halo around Sam’s head in order to put a bag of garbage around Clay’s doesn’t fly with the Trojan fanbase. It’s a juvenile analysis. Nobody buys it.

  7. Your tweet? What an absurd question. Moving past this inane statement, SEC game has about as many penalties as last night. I thought that was a PAC 12 thing. Auburn doesn’t have it today. Who do we play in the fiesta now?

  8. How is USC, a school known for its uber-star players, without O.J. Simpson, Anthony Davis, Marcus Allen, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, et al? Take away any of those dudes and USC loses some of its greatest wins ever.

Sam Darnold is my favorite USC QB of all time. But a lot of players won the Pac12 championship for USC last night and without them, Darnold would have had a disappointing year, accented by his turnovers, poor decisions and inability to hit the long ball. He’s still Mr. Clutch though and Helton has quite obviously been a terrific coach for what Sam needs. I’m sure Darnold appreciates CH for that.

This is one 11-2 USC team that insisted on doing it the hard way from the season opener on. Here’s to the same team going 12-2 and bringing another Fiesta Trophy into HH or the JM Center. Win Ugly Baby! That’s USC 2017. This is the best win ugly USC team I have ever seen. Gotta love these guys.

    • Finally comfortable on my train Jack? Seats aren’t the most comfortable it it got us 11 and we have one more stop.
      He’ll of a ride.
IMO, he’s the best money qb when it comes to winning time that I’ve ever seen. And it’s only his third year playing qb, including high school!

      • Anybody who’s gonna complain about USC after last night has a mental problem IMO. What a fantastic win!

I’m very frustrated by the type of errors we see Helton-USC coached teams consistently make, but that’s who we are for now. I think he’s a work in progress and an amazing example of a coach who has succeeded at USC despite learning on the job. Helton’s an amazing Trojan success story.

Who knows how long it will last? I don’t care. If he gets fired some day, even next year, it’s still been a heckuva successful ride with CH as the head man. He was just brought in to stabilize and has turned out to be so much more.

        • Fact is Helton isn’t stupid, he knew the environment he was walking into and came willingly. Not many would for what many viewed as a short term solution. But it’s not about him, those kids facing stanfurd on a short field twice in the fourth quarter and holding the line on 4th and goal against their jumbo formation!!! Then when nothing else mattered went the entire length of the field. They came to play.

          • Darnold never even gets a crack at his late game heroics in his own EZ if our D doesn’t come up with the greatest goal line stand since the TEXAS strip-fumble. So much has happened this year. What a season so far!

        • Jack, you’re beginning to remind me of the lesser intellects on this board. Keep your balance. True, no one knows what Helton is, but without Sam, CH would be getting the opportunity to show us, going forward.

Ask youself: suppose Kiffin had taken the job with Sam being a RS FR. In your opinion, would everything have turned out the same for him?.

I won’t say the same about Sark, because substance abuse can undermine the best of situations.

          • I’m beginning to think your football IQ is dropping huge as well. Let’s leave it at that.

        • There you go Jack B, saying no one should complain about USC after last night, and then you start complaining about the errors and sloppy play.
Why don’t you just own up to the fact this team could have made the playoff if it had a better HC & position coaches. After the playoff committee names Ohio St. with the same record as USC in the playoff, then look at who its coach is and then look at the no-name USC has who thinks everything is “wonderful” including his position coaches. Meyer vs. Helton?

          • Wrong. I’m not complaining. I’ll leave that to your group. It’s basically all you do day and night.

I’m fine with this USC team. Some great victories. Some very big limitations too on our OL and in the secondary. You think better coaching can make all those guys great. I don’t. We’re way overrated in that part of the field and also at LB. It’s obvious to anybody who watches USC play. Some of our players are simply overrated.

I’m TOTALLY satisfied to be in the Fiesta Bowl. We belong there. I’m also overjoyed we won so many squeakers. I’m fine with that.

I saw Meyer get slaughtered by IOWA and CLEM. OU made him look like crap too and he’s got better OL/DL talent than USC.

I’d say you’re in for a bad time being a USC fan. Helton’s here for two years minimum. Have fun. I will.

          • Are you ignoring what most analysts & reporters are saying about how this USC has played this season? It isn’t me…. I am just copying what I read. Those who supposedly know about football, color analysts, former coaches & etc. say a good coach & staff will make a difference in winning one game each season. If that is true, which one did Helton’s gang help the team win this season when all the games were sloppy and error-prone (which the reporters & analysts said so) ?
And you are right about Helton being around for another year or two, like it or not. I am anxious to see Helton win 10 games without Darnold around.

          • The players recruited the last 2/3 years that have played on this USC team have been averaging 4-stars. And a few 3-stars. Those classes have all been top 10 classes. So how easy is it to say the way this USC team has played was due to over-rated players? Yeah there are always a few that don’t pan out. But I don’t buy the excuse the way this team has played is the players fault.

          • You incorrectly said I’m complaining when I’m overjoyed to be playing OHIO ST in the Cotton. We are right where we belong and will be perfectly tested by Meyer in a truly great match-up. Stoked!

Things have worked out just perfect for USC today. I’ll leave the complaining to you guys. Have at it.

    • Wolf easily forgets the great game Uchenna Nwosu had last night, and throughout the entire season. If he doesn’t make the goal line tackle the outcome of this game may look different

      • Or the fact Chris Hawkins lost his grandmother a few hours prior to the game and played one of his best games ever.

        • Death in the family is devastating. What a courageous young man, playing with an emotional roller coaster going through his mind

        • Thanks for bringing this up, steveg. Chris said he didn’t get any sleep the night before the game because he was thinking about how much his grandmother meant to him. He promised himself he would make her proud of him. Great young man.

        • Jimmy Johnson: Great players play great in big games.

And yet, at the most important position in this offense: 17/24; 345; 2; 0

      • Uchenna has had an awesome year. As I’ve said before, I’m sure his draft stock has risen incredibly.

      • I’m going to reall miss Nwosu. His impact on the defense was much like Stevie t last year. Impactful

    • ….huh….what does Helton provide Darnold again…a framework to save him and his crew game after game…what am I missing…

      • Darnold started like a pick/turnover machine, improved all year, finished very strong and won the P12 Championship game MVP award. That’s what you are missing.

    • Hey Jb, I thought Swann made all the football decisions according to you? Maybe you missed his comments after the game concerning the head coach and his coaches—-I guess that “inside info” must have been wrong?

    • Other than Oklahoma winning at Ohio State, all of the Top Team’s Losses were on the Road. Wonder if the Committee even notices? I would argue that Penn State’s resume has been more impressive that Ohio State’s. I have a hunch that the Committee is still factoring in the Sandusky effect and not giving them a break.

        • The ND stain is too deep IMO. Worst USC performance I have ever seen. Really, I just hope WIS beats OHIO ST. That way we avoid all this mess and USC gets the Buckeyes in the Fiesta, perfect historically powerful match-up. I think.

          • Rivalry games count more IMO. No excuse not to show up in South Bend and be humiliated by what turned out to be a no-big-deal Irish team.

          • Not disagreeing Jack, just playing devils advocate and saying losing big to an unranked team has to hurt. Then the schedule and wins come into account. Maybe? But I’m pretty sure we’ll end up maybe 6-8 with a chance to jump up after a bowl game.

          • Personally, I don’t think the Committee is even considering us. Maybe had we beat STAN by 30-40, but that didn’t happen. It was another squeaker.

          • I think they’ll throw us a bone, more in the way of ranking, I don’t seriously expect the committee has us that close to the playoffs, but I could see a 6-8 ranking coming in this next poll.

          • Yeah we are toast as far as the committee. Frankly, I think they are correct. We don’t win”ugly” against Georgia IMO.

          • OSU losing by 15 at home worse than SC by 3 on the road. It isn’t even close. Take the names off and compare teams and SC has a better resume by far.

          • Yes, but 30 points at Iowa is worse. That’s like SC losing by 30 at ASU and then making the playoff. We all know that would NEVER happen. It is so obvious how the media just glazes over that horrendous loss for OSU. Factor in PSU imploded or OSU has O top 15 wins. Based on resume SC better than OSU and it isn’t even that close.

          • You’re preaching to the choir my friend. Just that we need the committee to think like you.

          • Rivalry hurts but ND is our showcase game for the East Coast. Even more so now that our Pac12 commissioner is clueless. That is the only SC game the bias east coast get to watch all year

          • Losing by 30 at Iowa worse than losing by 34 at ND. The question is…is OSU losing by 15 at home vs Oklahoma worse than USC losing on the road at WSU. In my opinion USC was in that game w a chance to win the whole way. Ohio St got dominated at home and Oklahoma shouldn’t have to beat them again in a playoff. That and Barrett is terinke QB when he has to pass

  9. Sam Darnold isn’t all that. The guy cannot read defenses and is absolutely clueless when it comes to knowing how to audible.

    I’m being dead serious here.

    • But yet, he’ll be playing on Sundays, making millions.(double crotch kick)…..Sam doesn’t call audibles, it comes the sidelines…another example of low football IQ

  10. You’re kidding me? Pushback? Sam is awesome but he threw 2 picks against Stanford and Texas, had 3 fumbles against Utah, no td’s and a pick against UCLA, and we ran for 330 yards and 4 td’s against Arizona. So yeah, maybe we still do win. I love Sam, but let’s not pretend he was the reason we are 11-2. Take off your blinders, this TEAM finds ways to win! Fight on!!!!

  11. Helton is very lucky that Darnold is around. Don;t forget he started Max Browne until the Utah game #4 last year. Anybody who saw the Spring game in 2016 could see Darnold had the edge over Browne. Helton is a decent coach , but not at any high level. A good coach doesn’t get slaughtered by Notre Dame with the team almost quitting when the first lost fumble happened. Remember the Tide fiasco last season opener. The schedule was mediocre. San Diego St. beat Stanford. They did not play UW. Of course Darnold does not play the other positions so the posters who claim he gets help are clueless to how it works with a leader at QB. What other school wanted Helton after he was interim coach twice. He showed his merit with a dumb practice routine before playing Wisconsin in the Holiday Bowl one year. He will get his chance in the Bowl game vs. a very good team to find out if he can win w/o Darnold saving his rear end having a below avg. performance.

    • Either way, he is going to be around for a while, get used to it. I see him getting better as a HC and players love to play for him. Perhaps we need to just be a little more patient seeing Swann isn’t going make any moves soon.

  12. …me think Helton must have had the famous Russian Revolutionary Lenin as a mentor who many times talked about ONE STEP FORWARD TWO STEPS BACK…

  13. And UCLA and Josh Rosen, and Ohio State and JT Barrett, and Oklahoma and Baker Mayfield, and Notre Dame and Brandon Wimbush, and Alabama and Jalen Hurt, and Washington State and Luke Falk.

This is a stupid argument—even for you. It’s stunning to hear that the most important player on the field plays the most important position on the team.

  14. USC’s success clearly has been a result of outstanding coaching…Darnold would be lost without the daily sage advice he gets from the coaching staff

  15. I think his point is that he is a special talent working outside of the system to pull out a bunch of very close games to teams with far, far, far inferior talent, and when he isn’t doing some off the cuff heroics things go badly. That’s different than identifying and developing special talent that does things within the general confines, developing their play within that system.

Btw, in most college systems where people use a great QB talent, its someone with incredible physical talent. Where Sam is different is that he works well off of broken plays, and gunslings effectively. Not to mention he’s noted that the play calling was predictable or that a problem was going to one receiver too often, so his talent is as much mental freewheeling as physical, kind of like Todd Marinovich, who at times simply saw more than his sub-par coaches.

  16. Next year will answer the questions about Gomer … most of us know it already
    But some are slow learners

  17. More stupidity from SW! Would SC have done as well without Matt Leinart? Sam was not as good early on without JuJu. It’s just a stupid question, eleven men play together at a time, and it takes every one of them to make it work. A better question would be would we have won without Ajene Harris? I think the answer is yes, his stupidity Friday night was the cherry on top of so many boneheaded plays he has made this year. The question is “Why is John Baxter playing him after so many mistakes throughout the season?”

  18. Does McKay win in 67-68 without OJ? Does Pete Carroll win without Carson Palmer, or Bush/Leinart? Top teams tend to have top players … so what’s your point?
