Sunday With Clay Helton (And Also Starring Urban Meyer)

Clay Helton and Urban Meyer spoke to the media this afternoon. Meyer referred to USC as the “University of Southern Cal.”

Helton was asked how to improve USC’s College Football Playoff chances going forward: “Eliminate probably two losses and again be conference champions and increase that resume profile the best we can.”

Helton said he watched a lot of Ohio State game this season because USC played later in the day.

Meyer said his first USC-Ohio State game memory was the 1980 Rose Bowl, which the Trojans won, 17-16. Meyer also served as an Ohio State assistant coach for the 1987 Cotton Bowl, the Buckeyes’ only other appearance in the game.

Meyer on Helton: “He wins games. He wins conference titles.”

  1. This is a good match up and it will be great for Helton’s street credibility to beat Mr Meyer. He has defeated Chris Peterson, Tom Herman, Franklin and David Shaw (2x’s) with his aw shucks Andy Griffith style. Go Clay!!!

  2. USC is the biggest Vegas underdog in the the major bowls. I think that’s just gonna add fuel to the fire. Expect USC to be READY for this one!

  3. Meyer is a piece of work. He never mentioned BYU by name when he was at Utah, he refered to them as ” the school down south “

  4. ‘Southern Cal’ huh? That jerk school site insists it be called’ The Ohio State University’. Their fan base is the epitome of MLB’s Boston Red Sox fans – awful.

Meyer is no fool – he knows lose this game and he’s going to hear about it and even worst for him a confirmation of why he wasn’t invited to the elite four – i.e. USC was/is a better 2 loss team than OH St.

Helton needs to act like Pete Carroll did and investigate the playing field (make sure he has the right shoes), proximity to the airport – I’m not kidding – the little things are what dominant programs focus on.

Going to be a great game as long as there is a serious demeanor by the players before and during that game – the Buckeyes don’t play – USC players better understand that and if they do they shall win.

    • rusoviet, Great post !! The Ohio State fan base that I am aware of are into total commitment but they appreciate and understand the game.. The only University the Buckeye fans defile is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The University of Michigan is hated. Our record proves that we are a better 2 loss team than OSU. The Buckeyes’s blowout loss to Iowa was pathetic. If both teams show up to play, it should be a great game. Speed with physicality. When it’s over, Coach Meyer and his players can fly home with their tail between their legs. BEAT THE BUCKEYES !!!.

      • That loss – in conference – was the death knell for OH St. according to the ESPN radio analysts this morning ‘before’ they were told who had slot # 4 (AL over OH St.) and once they did they again came back to that loss to a (in conference 4 – 5 – over all 7 – 5) IA team.

USC got smashed by Notre Dame who had 1 loss as did USC when the met 18th October.

They were pointed in how that committee is death on letting in a 2 loss team if an equal 1 loss available. Not to say they haven’t put one in but they don’t like to

        Thanks for the props schammer

  5. The fact Notre Dame faltered down the stretch to Miami and Stanford after humiliating the Trojans by 35 pts didnt help the cause . We could have gotten by the Wash St loss and probably made the CFP but that loss similar to the Buckeyes getting pounded by Iowa was a deal breaker. Again, no two loss team in the CFP

    • You little gutties have never beaten Notre Dame in the entire history of your school.

You’re headed to the Cactus Bowl – typical ucla territory.

      • I guess your fiesta bowl idea didn’t work out—maybe the irish will go there—much larger tv fan base—get over it!

    • Exactly wight – we lost our shot all by ourselves and it is why Swann made that comment about how we should have defeated WA St. – he could sense what was coming based on how the games were ending and did end that night up in Pullman.

Things much better now but hope Helton et. al. have learned a hard lesson ‘if’ it seems the parties that be are out to shiv you trust your gut they probably are – don’t give them a reason to shove it in.

  6. This whole deal, although actually great for USC, has left a bad taste. The disrespect for USC, the leaving them out of the discussion, the attitude of the talking heads on the bowl show, the committee putting USC beyond 6th just turned me off. There is such an obvious bias and nobody on tv seems to care and Larry Scott just bends over and takes it every time like the clown he is.

Now USC is 11-2, conference champ, and end up in a bowl that is not on Jan 1. Again, the bias of the committee is obvious.

USC should stand up for themselves and the conference, or at least stand up to the commissioner and get him replaced. Not a happy fan, even though I am proud of the USC team.

    • couple sites have ranked best bowl games this season.
ours #3 behind playoff games. Auburn,#5 bowl and I think Wisc. as low as #9 game.I like our site and match up.
      Ratings will be threw roof.

      • We scored HUGE today. All those who think we should be ranked higher than the Bucks now get to watch us prove it.

I can’t believe so many here apparently thought USC was a playoff team. The USC team I watched all season sure as heck wasn’t. No way.

We could have ended up 6-7, but so what. That’s all meaningless now. We get to play the #5 team and we’ll finish in the top 4 if we win. Perfect!

        Beat the Buckeyes at AT&T.

        • Funny thing is that many of the people who bitched about the team underperforming are now complaining about the lack of respect. Can’t have it both ways

        • For me it wasn’t about the ranking as much as the process and the criteria used to navigate through it. After today play in a CCG becomes a liability more than a prize. We should have been considered, not long maybe but considered nonetheless.
And Auburn, if I was them I’d be spitting fire.

        • Did you see the statement David Shaw released today? It says a lot about the system and how it effects us going forward. Short but sweet.

    • Why don’t you rag on the ad’s and presidents of the schools–they sign off on everything ls does–Friday nite games, not knowing the time of games until a week before, 8 pm starts in late Oct. and Nov.—like ls, they all bend over for the money—the hell with season ticket holders!

    • Good points, and they hype the 6 New Years Day Bowl games, and USC is in one… on December 29. I watched 6 1/2 hours of this BS on ESPN and they never explained how a new years day bowl is played 3 days before New Years Day. Is that when they will air it?

  7. Being a 4 year graduate of The University of Southern California, I use “Southern Cal” often. It’s quick and easy and says it all.

    • It’s good to have more than one moniker for one’s school – city state etc.. ‘LA’ ‘La La Land’ So Cal LA area etc.

    • Who cares if we’re called Southern Cal? When I was a kid, people often called USC either SC or Southern Cal. Great name. Mike Garrett didn’t like it, for whatever reason, but he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.

  8. Food for thought and discussion: if USC had beaten Washington st. and lost to nd, does sc go to the playoff? If not then does Larry Scott and Lynn Swann raise hell? Or does Scott sit on his thuqqmb and twirl it while it is plugged in his a^s and not support the conference nor USC because that means he would have to take a stand?

    • IDK. I’m going to have to conduct an at home experiment to see if some of the things you wrote are even physically possible. I’ll get back to you later.

  9. Next year SC has to go undefeated, same as the BCS era. Trust me, if same scenario plays out next year with Bama, they’ll still go in ahead of an undefeated SC because it’s not reason it’s rationalization by this standardless committee.
