USC vs. ?

USC looks like it will play in the Fiesta Bowl . . . against Wisconsin? I have to say that does not excite me at all. I would rather see USC play Penn State or Auburn.

  1. How does Ohio State get in over USC? Both of USC’s losses were to ranked opponents. Ohio State’s lost to an unranked Iowa should disqualify them.

    • USC didn’t deserve to be in the playoff.

Don’t lose to an average WSU team and don’t get blown away by your rival on national TV

    • IF Alabama gets in I’m out with the whole thing. You have 5 conference champs that all deserve a spot, who do you leave out, OSU or USC?

    • OSU lost big to OU, that was their Mulligan.Add a 31 point loss to Iowa, come on.
Not a Bama fan,but they should be ahead of buckeyes.
Playing Penn state again serves no purpose for us.Wisconsin sounds boring. OSU would give us big upside

        • Happy holidays to you and yours Sam.I hope so. That is a game with upside for us,heck the Pac 12. Champ vs Champ.

          • Happy Holidays to you to buddy!

            Urban vs. Clay
            &
            Barrett vs. Darnold

A Win in the Fiesta Bowl might flip the switch and say it was a pretty successful season. Urban got a lot of praise because Pete left and I used to hate how ESPN made it sound like he was the best coach around.

          • With the number of times we go up against OSU in recruiting, it would be nice show case.
Would be an excellent end to season.

Curious; I think Tee will end up on staff at Tennessee. If he leaves before game Tyson probably would be interm oc.
            Does offensive change much?
How do you see us finishing recruiting?
            OL ? DB?

          • Yeah again, and I understand the animus towards Meyer, he got NC’s at both FL and OH St…..only Sabi’s done that (LSU 2003 and @ AL)

          • He’s a good coach, real good

            But…………..

***He walked into the #1 Recruiting Class at Florida that had Chris Leak for him to mean on.

***Then Ohio State’s roster was already Rose Bowl/BCS ready when he took over.

He’s got nothing on Pete Carroll and the job he did with USC and then go win a Super Bowl with a franchise like the Seahawks.

          • No argument therw which is why were Meyer to lose this game against USC and Helton it shatters an awful lot of the Big 10 prowess esp. against USC and in particular Helton

        • I hope you are correct, but I saw Ohio State against Auburn. SC against Wisconsin. SC vs Ohio State makes perfect sense. The 2 conference champs, and the 2 teams left out for the last spot.

  2. Who ever they play! We need to dominated for a whole game and have lot of style points and not be satisfied with a close win

  3. I was hoping for Ohio State, but even if Alabama gets in looks like Wisconsin. Possibly Penn State again. Either of those choices does not seem like a positive situation for SC.

  4. I never cared for the locked in leagues to certain bowl games. Seems we never get a shot at the SEC or ACC . Always the Big 10.

    • And they like it like that. Could you imagine bama having to travel west of the Mississippi? When was the last time they freely scheduled such a game on their own?

  5. I’m sick of the talkin heads, bama was hurt, ohio st has better wins, but SC DOESNTget credit for better, tougher schedule or injuries. It is easily arguable that our injuries in the nd game alone (18 total) including Gustin and our top 2 nose guards forcing us to burn a redshirt and start a true freshman for his first time at night in nd stadium. Please explain what bama injuries were worse? Really, does Mercer equal nd? Does playing 8 conference games, mean they should get away without playing the same level opponents? Ha.
And osu losing to an unranked team by 30 is okay, of course it is, if either scenario is in the financial interests of the networks involved and the journalists who work for them and vote in polls. Doesn’t the touting and higher ranking of a conferences teams directly affect the viewership and hence the value of their product? BS, I say. BS!

    • K. Herbstreit, last night, said a case can easily be made for USC. He noted they had injuries just like Alabama and no one talks about that. He noted their schedule was a lot tougher and their big loss was at Notre Dame and not Iowa. USC had a better out of conference schedule also. They also won their Conference.

      • This is too little way too late, he wasn’t saying any such thing earlier in the week except with the caveat that it’s not enough. This last little bit is their attempt at looking balanced. Fluff.

        • What I don’t understand is, why is not Auburn being talked about in stead of Alabama. They are the runner up and also beat Alabama.

Why is it Alabama? Georgia and Auburn split their games,. one being an Auburn home game and the other a Georgia home game in Atlanta.

          • Alabammy is the bell cow of the conference and has the ability to recruit across the country and as such has pretty much become the sacred cow to protected at all costs.. cbs went so far as to say during the broadcast that they shouldn’t even count the conference championship game and just go with bama. It goes against every tenet of good sportsmanship and the importance of playing and winning games.

          • That was really unprofessional – so the championship game shouldn’t count? Couldn’t believe Danielson said that.

          • I will go further and say that it shows collusion between the network, who stands to reap the benefits having the best sec game weekly, and the conference who gains from a powerful bama through better exposure through the other networks and thusly looks more glamorous as a conference to the recruits. BS!

      • When all is said.Looking back on our season as frustrating as it seemed, it really was the WSU game that has us out.
I don’t think we are a play off team. Then again only two teams are.

        • Compared to the embarrassing blowout loss at ND in front of a national TV audience, where SC looked like a truly awful team, the WSU loss looks like a W.

        • Well if we did not lose 3 OL on game day, I really think we would have won that game. But so be it. I don’t think we are playoff caliber this year, but I think OSU deserves it more than ‘bama. You don’t win your conference you should not be in the playoffs. Period.

          • We are not a playoff team. The hype was through the roof at start of season,I didn’t buy it.But I respect our team Greatly for 11-2 record. Given how weak or how much parity in CF.

    • Notre Dame – 49
      USC – 14

You can’t put a team in the POs that lays that big of an egg. USC hopefully gets a shot at OHIO ST, another team that proved getting slaughtered too huge doesn’t make up for other strong points.

      • Only 2 maybe 3 playoff caliber teams.Looks like even 3 loss Auburn ranked ahead.
OSU would be a great opponent.Penn st. Would be let down, Wisconsin so so

        • Ya, I’m shocked AUB outranked us and believe that’s wrong.

But very obviously, USC just doesn’t pass the “eye test” for a lot of people. Winning Ugly has some lasting negatives and USC (and hopefully Helton) just found out that style points matter.

          • Yes we won Ugly. For a 11-2 Were a number of games were unsatisfied . Just to much hype vs how we won.Remember before start of season neither of us felt this was a playoff team. What I didn’t see, that there really isn’t 4 playoff teams in country.
If Sam stays .I hope without faith, that the hype is tempered. That we win our way to play offs. Not have a ticket bought we have to return. An OSU victory would be similar to Rose Bowl victory

          • Please let us play OHIO ST in the Fiesta. That’s just a fantastic matchup. We win that game, we’ll end up a top 5 team, maybe top 4, and with this USC team, we don’t deserve any better.

          • Do we care about the rankings after the season? I never proudly shouted, “We’re number FOUR!! We’re number FOUR!!”. Granted I never shouted we’re number one either, but at least that’s an actual thing.

          • Anytime USC finishes in the top 5, I’m happy. I’m not one of those guys who thinks only one team can end up happy and proud all year. Good luck with that.

In fact, I’d rather win a huge bowl and finish like we did last year at #3, than lose the NC like ALA did and finish #2. That’s an easy call for me, especially when I know we don’t have a real NC caliber team – and we don’t this year obviously.

Sure, winning it all is great but that is a relatively rare occurrence, whereas a very reachable top five finish – I’m always good with that, especially when you lost to your major rival by 35 points. Great recovery since then by USC. A lot to be proud of this season for USC fans.

      • I get it Jack, but losing to an UNranked team? Playing only 8 conference games, when we’re forced to play 10 this year (including CCG) they are a sham, and overall it’s corupt at its core. The team that beat bama’s lower rated for having to play their CCG? While bammy sits at home and goes up in ranking.. why play the game..instead of nd we should play Mercer, instead of WSU we could have played USD, our record would look more in line with the powerful sec. F’ em.

        • In the end, with USC, it was more than just about wins and losses. Not only did we get slaughtered by ND, but we also won ugly against a lot of our opponents.

USC better learn that when you leave the decisions to others who may not have your best interests in mind, you need to win the way they like.

Truth is, as I said would happen last night, USC wasn’t even really considered. Hopefully, USC learns from this because winning ugly too much or losing real bad obviously doesn’t impress the Committee, and they rule.

          • I really wanted Auburn to win yesterday to break the 2 loss excuse, because the 2 loss excuse doesn’t apply to SEC teams, why does it apply to everyone else?

  6. Arash Markazi of ESPN says Ohio State will play USC in the Fiesta Bowl.

I would love to play Urban.

  7. I think it’s gonna be a matchup of the two power 5 champions not in playoffs, USC/Ohio state in fiesta. A very attractive network and national pairing. Traditional!

  8. Just watching playoff show and they’ve intimated that usc is probably 8, behind Wisconsin and auburn. Total bull. We should be at the worst just behind Ohio state at 6. So tired of the love fest with the overrated SEC, which plays less conference games, and isn’t penalized for hardly ever having to leave state for non conference , and scheduling cream puff games late in the season.

  9. Who was it last week that was skeptical of me when I virtually guaranteed Bama (or 2 SEC teams) would get into the playoffs? You owe me an apology. Never underestimate ESPN/SEC love fest

  10. It’s time for the FBI to get off their collective as $es and investigate the Uber-corrupt NCAA and this bogus CFP “committee”. The collusion in this incestuous group is unbelievable. The deck is so stacked against anyone outside the SEC. Personally I’d like the see USC and OSU say thanks but no thanks.

    • I was thinking, if I was Urban Meyer, I’d have my team show up at the Rose Bowl and no Show wherever they’re suppose to be.

  11. I sense a degree of indifference towards USC is partially due to Helton’s personality. I’ve never seen a more contented head coach for any program that I recall ever.

He doesn’t lose his cool often and he’s always cordial after a game win or lose. Contrast that with the bulk of the other programs and you have a complete opposite. The most glaring example for me this year was Herman’s complete lack of respect for Helton and USC after they lost to the Trojans in early September.

I believe nationally Helton is seen as someone that fell into the job , which he did, and due to his sunny demeanor it allows those talking heads to deem him and the program as suspect.

    • None of the fan bases from around the country think much if USC and thats because of Helton and how he got out coached and dismantled by Alabama.

      • My post was not mocking Clay Helton rather it was the way he is perceived wrongly by the national media and coaching world.

You don’t get back-to-back 10 + victories season on luck boyo esp. when the # of players changes over annually. Helton is doing something right – just needs to find some better assistants because next year’s schedule and 2019 are going to be tough.

        • USC has far better players than everyone they play. Even with injuries USC’s 2nd and 3rd stringers are rated higher than WAZZU’S players and Helton somehow managed to lose that game. There have been FCS teams that have beaten WAZZU recently and those FCS teams rolled up big yardage on WAZZU, are you telling me that USC’s backups shouldn’t be able to play as well as those FCS teams that beat WAZZU?

          Come on now!

  12. USC vs the B1G in a bowl game…what a shocker!

The CFP committee showed mercy on Clay Helton. Max Nikias heads the CFP, so Helton was spared another beat down at the hands of an SEC team. An ACC team would have exposed Hekton too.

    LOL!

  13. No team has made it to playoffs with more than a 14 pt loss. The 35 pt loss to Notre Dame was the killer

    • What was the killer loss for you little gutties? You lost so many, it must be hard to name one the “killer” though USC 28 – ucla 23 would seem to take the cake.

  14. USC/OHIO STATE in cotton bowl dec29. Classic matchup, just wish it was a New Years bowl. Glad it’s not a repeat with Penn State , who plays Washington . Would love for pac 12 to kick butt in bowl games, like we have in the past, to help change the perception of the conference
