Clay Helton not winning coach of the year just shows you everyone thought USC had most talent and did not do the most with it.

Now, while I’m not saying it should be handed to Helton, but why is Shaw the coach of the year? This isn’t 2016 or before. And furthermore, it shouldn’t be handed to one-pump-chump Taggart. That didn’t last long. Anyone else?

    • Paul Muad’dib

Wilcox or Helton. Both have USC ties, so they won’t be acknowledged.

  • hoohoolianFUCLA

Coach of the Year David Shaw? Stanford, like 9/12 of the PAC12, under-achieved.

Wilcox did 5 times better than most thought he would. Cal was not expected to win 2 games, let alone 5.

    • Edward Mainland

Agree. Wilcox overachieved. Shaw underachieved. Shaw failed to make Costello his starting quarterback at the beginning of the year and thus lost games he could have won. Shaw’s boneheaded goal line failure in the USC game showed lack of imagination and guts.

      • fast fred

While I agree that Shaw is a wonderful coach, both points you make are so true.

  • Peaceful Warrior

I think Shaw is a great coach but
    2015 12-2
    2016 10-3
    2017 9-4
You could also argue what people have crucified Helton for he started the wrong QB this year. Hardly coach of the year material.

    • Gabby

Nice guy, but not deserving this season

      • schammer47

You just don’t get it, Gabby. You have no legitimate beef, senor.

  • J.A.M.

….I hate hate hate hate to say it but David Shaw is a very good coach…

  • Gabby

Hey wolf, you idiot………The PAC12 COY is an award judged from the body of work accomplished within the conference. USC did the most with their talent, they won the PAC12 title. Once again, twisting facts to fuel your agenda

  • Trojan5

If you would like to see a well thought out discussion for COY of the year check out Jon Wilner. He has ability to throw shade with a heavy dose of snark; but he doesn’t make it personal. BTW, he also spells out how he arrived at his choice of COY.

    • steveg

And you leave us hanging? Who was his choice.

      • Trojan5

Sorry. He picked Graham. Laid out his rational pretty well. I would have selected Wilcox. Record aside, it was obvious that CAL was a completely different team with Wilcox .

  • steveg

Shaw winning the award actually shows “everyone” respects Shaw.

    • trojan_1972

Exactly. The award was not based on which coach got the most out of the talent they had, as asserted by Wolf.

    • JustOwns

      Conversely, nobody respects the bozos.

      • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

That’s a rude thing to say about your bRuins.

        • JustOwns

How’s the Federal Investigation in bozo u and Tony Bland $bill cheating working out?

        • SCgrad12

Easy on Bruin Rob. Today is the six year anniversary of his dating profile on DateMeLA getting exposed by a ten year old. Bruin Rob goes 5’7″ and a shelf 245 lbs., with a goatee that looks like it needed some Miracle Grow.

  • ItsAllAboutTheBall

The fall of Jake Browning from Heisman Contender to no where to be found has been interesting. USC started it and Alabama finished it last year.

  • JustOwns

    bozo u Pac – 12 individual awards: 0 fer 5.

    • Jack B

Honker Rosen loses to Darnold yet again.

USC has significantly more all-Pac12 picks than any other school. little gutties bring up the rear end of the P12.

loser bruins. Cactus Juice Bowl here we come!

      • Linkster

Actually, I am starting to feel some remorse for Owns. The poor buggar comes over here very day and takes his lickings. What kind of sick person continually comes back for more beatings. Probably the booze over the years. No education. It is the Christmas season, let’s all pitch in and get Owns a meal at the Salvation Army? Or a go fund me to get him back in his dual wide. What do you say Trojans?

        • Pasadena Trojan

He has no other friends besides us. Even the ruin rejects over at bra don’t want him.

      • SCgrad12

Jack, please forgive Bruin Rob. Today is the six year anniversary of his dating profile on DateMeLA getting exposed by a ten year old. BruinRob goes 5’7″ and weighs in at a svelt 245 lbs., along with a goatee that needs some Miracle Grow.

    • trojan_1972

Listen up owns, you told us yesterday on this very blog that you were laying off the peyote. Come on, fess up, you are still on the magic cactus, right?

You need to get clean if you are going to get hired for your dream job!

      #Don’tFailTheChik-fil-ADrugTest

      • Linkster

He would never make Chick-Fil. Taco Bell maybe.

        • trojan_1972

That is why it is his “dream job”….

        • SCgrad12

Bruin Rob is a five time golden spatula winner from McDonald’s.

      • JustOwns

        “…on this very blog…”…..Funny.

’72 how do walk around so FOS. MM’s is not an abbreviation for peyote.

I said peyote was too much trouble to prepare. I’m not like you, I don’t get high on a bowl of cheerios and a pound to sugar.

        • Pasadena Trojan

Too much hard work for a ruin grad to prepare a bowl of cereal. That would be equiivant of getting a PHD out of ugly. No, your high is twinkies and Krusty cream donuts.

    • Pasadena Trojan

Squatter, where was quitten Rosen with after all the awards? That is right, he was sweeping the gym and delivering pizza as an intern.

  • J.A.M.

….I hate hate hate hate to say it but David Shaw is a very good coach…

  • J.A.M.

….and for those who think Wilcox is a genius …rewatch the play he drew up in overtime against Arizona when they went to two…that is the Wilcox I know and love…but I would have been ashamed to be part of that play even if was done in Pop Warner….just sayn

  • Jack B

Liam Jimmons won’t face charges for being a runaway train on the WSU field. Ya baby! Fight On and let the boys leave the field in peace.

  • Jack B

Wrong. Helton did a heckuva job but Shaw brought his team back from the dead without a QB like Darnold, who is still perceived, rightly or wrongly, as the real secret of USC’s success.

    • Pudly76

You saw massina got a yr.?

      • Jack B

        What did Loggins get?

    • LamontRaymond

The fact that Helton is not coach of the year just goes to show you the voters are full of crap.

      • David Keeling

Maybe they know something, having educated eyes?

    • 04Trojan

But what about Helton’s overall record, beating the new coach of the year twice in one season, and completing the regular season with USC’s first conference title in almost a decade? All that while getting B-slapped in South Bend, a tough road loss against Wazzou, and on top of those losses week to week “make or break” games. Again, like I said earlier, I wouldn’t just hand the coach of the year to Helton, but head to head with Shaw in 2017, I’d give the nod to Helton.

    • schammer47

The voters are full of crap. John B. Why is it so hard for you to see ???

      • Jack B

Why is it so hard for you to see that the P12 coaches think you are full of crap? You make me laugh. They know a lot more football than you ever will.

  • David Keeling

I wish that last sentence would get repeated a few times for those yahoos who think Helton is what USC needs to get to where Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St. etc. are. But you yahoos keep ignoring what most others in this industry think about Heton’s Coaching.

    • steveg

Why you gotta call people names? Is everyone dumber than you?

    • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

But we’re playing against Ohio St. in our bowl game. Doesn’t that put us where they’re at? I’m no Helton pumper. but firing a guy after 10 and 11 win seasons as his 1st two would be about the dumbest thing you could do. Who would want to coach at USC after that and our previous coach debacles post-Carroll?

      • steveg

You are spot on and that has been explained to him before but I guess if you don’t see it his way you are a yahoo. Whatever the heck that is.

      • TireBiter

If we did that we’d make the Tennessee search look good…

      • Jack B

Imagine if Swann dumped Helton now after winning the Rose Bowl in fantastic fashion, finishing #3, and getting into the Cotton with a shot at top 4 in the country. Who would interview for the job? Grad assts? Secretarys?

      • David Keeling

Yes you are correct. Winning a conference championship puts that team in a game with others comparatively successful. The last time USC played a team ranked as high as Ohio St, it was Notre Dame. We know how that game went. You must show you can beat the higher rated teams to be considered one yourself.

    • Pudly76

Who in this industry, shares with you their thoughts and insights on Clay, you buffoon. If you don’t like someone, so what

      • David Keeling

Thanks for the name calling if it makes you feel good… I merely repeated what was posted, didn’t I, and if you watch the college football programs on ESPN, Fox & CBS, you would know what everyone thinks of the way the USC team played this year and was respected as such IN THE POLLS. I don’t have the expert trained eye on the ins & outs of executing plays. Just what I see. But maybe you know better than everyone else, huh?

        • Pudly76

You’re the one who was name calling, or is yahoo better than buffoon? As far as the announcers go I’ll leave that for your judgment as I’m sure they’re impartial and they’re not pushing the agenda driven by their networks..the fact people don’t agree with me doesn’t make them wrong, in fact we may agree, except for the yahoo bit..but that’s ok because you think so? I don’t know better than anyone else, just don’t like being called a yahoo, but any buffoon would know that

  • UCLA Dynasty

How did Shaw win? Heisman candidate, quality players all over the field and 4 losses including SDSU. Talk about underachieve.

Wilcox, Taggart, Leach probably all more deserving.

    • Linkster

RoJo had just a good year as Love.

    • schammer47

UCLA Diminished, All of those coaches you mentioned aren’t fit to SHINE USC Trojan Head Coach Clay Helton’s SHOES. Always fun to right the ship you tried to sink.

  • Paul Muad’dib

No Scott, it shows how much hate there is for USC still lingering out there. Jealousy mostly.

    • fast fred

      Wrong, its your arrogance!!

      • schammer47

freddy, Only Scum would accuse a Trojan, any Trojan, of being arrogant. Try again if you can release the scum.

  • steveg

Great way for Clay Helton to get coach of the year. Hire Les Miles as DC and Mike Riley as OC.

  • Old Trojans never die

I guess you dont beat Notre Dame, you aint nothin in the PAC 12

  • StokaNoka

Darnold didn’t win player of the year… does that show you he isn’t the savior you make him out to be?

    • JustOwns

I am shocked. So no Pac-12 PoY award or NYAC Heisman.

      • StokaNoka

Was actually showing his logic was flawed with “he doesn’t win an award, so he sucks”, but ok.

  • Laker Rod

Collin Schooler wins Freshman Defensive POY. He was a 3 star recruit from Mission Viejo.

In the mean time, UCLA starts two 5 star recruits Jaelan Phillips and Darnay Holmes from the 1st game of the season but yet no POY honors.

DumbA$$ Of The Year would have to go to 88Straight

    • SCgrad12

You forgot about 5 star Mique.

      • Laker Rod

No I didn’t. That was last year. He was 2016 Frosh Defensive POY per delusional Bruin fans back in Spring 2016.

UCLA must lead the nation in defensive 5 star busts/under achievers:

        2012 – Ellis McCarthy
2013 – Priest Willis and Eddie Vanderdoes
        2015 – Kesean Lucier-South
        2016 – Mique Juarez
2017 – Jaelan Phillips and Darnay Holmes

        • SCgrad12

Well Mique did red shirt to “get his mind right”.

          • Laker Rod

Yup…all of 2016 to get his mind right but for 2017 his body was all jacked up.

Dude is so fat and slow it’s ridiculous. This past year has been more about getting his body right/weight down. He’s at like 255 right now.

        • 88 Straight

Happy to know that you’ve already declared 4 current Bruins busts. You have no idea and no talent. Why don’t you actually wait and see how their careers work out.

Eddie Vanderdoes is starting at DT for the Raiders as a rookie. Hardly a bust.

If you want to see a bust, look in the mirror. However, you were never a 5-star at anything.

          • Laker Rod

Who cares what one does in the pros you fool. EV turning into a starting DT only shows how truly inept UCLA is. Wake up.

And in terms of “5 star busts”…the term 5 star in itself usually means that supposedly that true frosh was supposed to make some pretty big contributions. Dummy.

          • 88 Straight

You are literally the most ignorant human being of little accomplishment that I have ever witnessed. Stupid on top of stupid. You say they are supposed to make big contributions but you say they should redshirt. It must be very confusing to twist around and change positions more often than the kama sutra, not that you have very actually been with a woman, Rain Man.

          • Laker Rod

LOL!!! You made a complete FOOL of yourself and you know it. You tried to claim all these all conference guys played as true frosh. HA HA HA!!

What a DUMMY. So which one is your most embarrassing moment? This one takes the cake. LOL!!

You’ve been so humiliated by realizing that a lot the all conference guys actually redshirted you can’t even respond to it you coward.

    • 88 Straight

      Aspergers. Look it up.

    • Pasadena Trojan

Phillips was hurt for a few games. he did not play that much.

      • Laker Rod

He got hurt because he wasn’t fully physically ready to play on the D line. In addition, Phillips was awful in run support. He is showing some promise as a pass rusher for sure. I expect a lot more from Phillips next year. The wrong move made by UCLA was that Phillips should not have started. Rick Wade proved to be a much better run defender and adequate rusher. Phillips should have just come in for 3rd and longs for the most part.

    • 88 Straight

By the way, genius, look at the All Pac-12 Team. Try a count. You love to count and make lists, Rain Man.

1st Team: 22 players and only 3 had redshirted.

2nd Team: 24 players and only 6 had redshirted.

So thats 9 players out of 46 that redshirted or 19.5%. Why is that? Because the best players are put on the field to compete. I guess every coach in the league is a dummy, including David Shaw who started a true freshman at tackle.

That’s why you work at Walmart.

  • StokaNoka

imagine if USC beat Oregon State by one point, lost to Stanford twice, and lost the Pac12 title… would Helton win the award?

    • Pudly76

      And lost to SDst?

  • schammer47

Couldn’t be more wrong, USC? Journalist. Shaw lost twice. Helton beat Shaw, TWICE. I’ll take the wins over the Award. Won’t you, Troll Journalist ?

    • Arturo

      And twice on Sunday.

  • Arturo

Would’ve been cool to see the PAC12 stick it to the rest of the nation and not pick Love for OPOY yet still have him go to NY for the Heisman. I guess all you have to do to win a DPOY is play at Arizona and have a name like Scooby or Scooter.

  • Arturo

I guess Stanford won the game on Friday.

  • English 101

Eeyore (a pessimistic, gloomy, depressed, anhedonic, old grey stuffed donkey) not being reassigned from Inside USC to cover funerals for the obituaries section of this paper shows you that your editor confused USC with the Hundred Acre Woods.

  • Mike M

Are you frikin kidding. Shaw lost 3 pac12 games. He not even 2nd team coach of year

  • Sas

    Mr. Blogger,

You keep behaving as if Clay Helton stole you’re prom date way back. I’ve been tough on our playerss@

    • Pasadena Trojan

Sas, you are wrong, he has never had a date, let alone a prom date. Scooter is just that, he lives in his parent’s basement and pops his head out to see if the sun still shines.

  • Ray

I’m glad Clay is our coach. Sure, he needs to upgrade the assistant coaches for sure. We have stability now though.

  • Sebastian Lane

Wrong again part 2. Stanford overachieved. UDub was the overwhelming favorite to win the North. SC merely met its expectations, and that should be recognized, but not celebrate. Shame. I agree with Jack B.

  • bb

Wolfie you feel that Helton had the most talent and did not do the most with it. Do not say “everyone” because that’s sinply not true.

  • David Keeling

There are two sides involved in supporting/not supporting Clay Helton. One side feels it is right, the other side thinks it sees warning signs. We all want USC football back where it belongs, among the very best programs. Helton might be the coach to get USC back on top. But the way this team plays, begs to differ it will ever get that far. Staff changes have to happen. Helton needs to forget about friendships and even family if it comes to providing players the coaching it needs to succeed. Winning a conference championship in a less competitive year only outs window dressing on the picture. Beating Ohio St. will show if this coaching staff has the ability to take USC to the next level. I am doubtful.
