USC-Ohio State Picture Of The Day

With USC playing Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, I will start offering pictures of past games. Here’s the 2008 game at the Coliseum.

  1. I remember this game well. Mark Sanchez threw four touchdown passes, Joe McKnight rushed for 105 yards on 12 carries and the top-ranked Trojans crushed No. 5 Ohio State 35-3.

      • Carroll’s defense did it quite a few times, didn’t it? That was the foundation of his teams’ phenomenal success.

          • Yes, Carroll with Ken Norton Jr had quite a knack at recruiting and developing great LBs back then.

          • Someone on the blog said Norton was spotted on the USC campus recently. But was never confirmed by other sources

          • That was me, he may have just stop by to kick tires and check in… USCID is a close friend.

          • Yeah….I’d say they had some pretty good LB’s that year. Kaluka Maiava, Malcome Smith, Ray Maualuga, Brian Cushing, Clay Mathews, Mike Morgan, Chris Galippo were all LB’s on that team.

          • Truly, I think this is the best linebacking corp Sc has ever had. Physical and quick. I remember Cushing taking that on side kick against ND and running it back for a td. Maualuga was a hitter.

        • Too bad PC decided to get rid of Norm Chow. Had he kept him, they would have won 2 or 3 more natties.

          • Instead Norm Chow went on to get fired from Tennessee and then get fired from UCLA and then get fired from Hawaii. Hey at least he got to pretend to be a head coach at UH. True offensive genius.

          • He was, indeed, an offensive genius. I never said he was a good head coach. He never had the personality to be a head coach. Tennessee and UCLA were not a good fit for Chow. But SC was the perfect fit and he never wanted to leave. His family lived in socal and he had 2 daughters going to SC.

          • You said SC would’ve won 2 or 3 more national titles if they kept Chow, which is ridiculous based alone on the fact that he was so good he got fired from his next 3 jobs.

  2. That was the best SC defense I’ve seen in almost 40 years as a fan. We gave up 1 TD in 6 homes games. One bad half on a Thursday night at Oregon State cost us a shot at the national title.

    • The BCS crooks cost us the NC. We lost by 3 at OSU who finished 9-3 that year w a Sun Bowl win. Florida lost at home vs a bad Mississsippi team (Orgeron) and somehow that loss was deemed better than at OSU. SC was the real NC in ’08

      • We beat WSU 69-0 and UW 56-0. Also killed STAN 45-23, ND 38-3 and the little gutties 28-7, then walloped PSU in the Rose Bowl 38-24 after stepping off the gas and waltzing in for an easy landing.

        • Sanchez was on fire during that RB bowl. Off that performance alone, it raised his draft stock. I truly thought he should of came back one more year. It was quite obvious PC felt the same way

          • PC didn’t handle that one too well.

So he turned around and immed bolted on USC as soon as it suited him. I never blamed him, but he shouldn’t have made a big public fuss out of Sanchez deciding to exit school for the dough. Most do, given the opportunity.

          • It certainly put a lot of pressure on MB to grow up in a hurry. The monster game at the Shoe was his baptism.

But the real star against Ohio St. was McKnight. And after that game, the wheels started to come loose. The Duck’s took over and had a nice ride

          • By then the NCAA had already been looking for a way to take down USC for years with a microscope and the strain was starting to show.

Carroll eventually told his agent to find him an NFL gig because he saw what was coming couldn’t be good. PC was really ready to go and in rushed Paul Allen and the Seahawks.

And you’re right. The Ducks and Kelly were about to change the game. PC had great timing and got out in the nick of time. Sanchez had a lower ceiling than most of us thought. But he’s still in the game. Not bad at all.

          • A little fun-fact, Sanchez and Ben Roethlisberger were the only two quarterbacks in NFL history to reach the conference championship in their first two seasons in the league

          • I think the League just figured out Sanchez’ weaknesses and jumped on them, causing his eventual slide into a clipboard holder. I think the NFL is a brutal, sophisticated testing ground that is on constant watch for your weaknesses and vulnerabilities to exploitation.

Look at Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys. Last year he looked like the steal of the draft. Now he looks like just another QB, above average, but not of the elite variety anymore. If he’s not careful, he’ll be just another guy, like Sanchez became.

          • Don’t discount the relative mess that his personal life had become. There was indeed a female grad student with whom he had a dalliance and I think he needed a change of scenery. Did PC get divorced? I don’t think he did….

    • The current system would have fixed that bad night. PC could only wish for a four team playoff

  3. Great game. Too bad the Trojans were being patted on the back by everyone, including themselves, and lost their next game at Oregon St, costing themselves the chance to play in the BCS championship game.

  4. USC has beaten OHIO ST 7X in a row.

Here’s to #8. Could be Darnold’s and will for sure be RoJo’s last game as Trojans.

Here’s to the best of USC’s most exasperating teams ever. We could be headed for another classic USC close-call winning effort. With this memorable 2017 season, that would be just perfect.

  5. McKnight hyped as the next Reggie Bush, never lived up to that though, was exciting to watch. In that game I rember McKnight jumping back and forth and going for 12 yards up the middle, and Herbstreet saying does Joe McKnight thank this is a video game.

  6. Latest betting odds have OH St. favored by 6.5 points down from 7

    KS St. 2.5 over ucla,
    PA St. 2 over WA
    TCU 2.5 over Stanford
    LSU 2 over notre dame
    Auburn 9.5 over UCF
AL 2.5 over Clemson (go figure that one – best bet there is for the underdog on the list)

  7. LMFAO! Tennessee didn’t even give Tee Martin a glance. Clay Helton really did a bang up job coaching coach Martin up.

    AHA HA HA HA!

    Classic! Just Beautiful!

    • Relax, you’re still under concussion protocol. Take the rest of the week off, you’ve earned it

      • So that was the diagnosis the doctor gave you? Maybe you should go back to giving Helton rub downs instead of those post game suck ups, give your lips and neck a break.

        LOL!

    • Tennessee needs an experience coach.. The Vols do have a rich history in football… Why give the keys to a first time coach?.. Ucla has done that several times and they failed big time.. FYI Chip aint the answer either..

      • Chip is the answer. All ugly requires is that you know how to cheat to be a head coach over there. Look at Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden, JIm Harrick, and now Cheater Kelly. The tradition continues.

    • Better chance of getting SC gig next year as Darnoldless Gomer loses at Texas by 40 at Stanford by 30 and at Khalil Tate … and gets fired. Tbone becomes interim, in the new tradition, of USC football … players like him and the lack of regulation and BOOM 3 year contract
      repeat and rinse

    • 03 was the worst. Oklahoma got BLOWN OUT in their conference championship game and then went on to lose the BCS Championship game instead of a USC team with the same record that was on fire.

    • Practice is shut down until the 18th. Kids are being students right now and are studying for finals. whereas, at ugly, they are preparing for their finals by stealing the tests and cheating on their test.
