Tyson Helton To Tennessee

Not Tee Martin but Tyson Helton, who will become the quarterbacks coach at Tennessee. The question is whether Helton gets to call plays. Why would Helton make a lateral move? He probably figured even if Martin left, Lynn Swann might not allow him to call plays.

And what about Martin? He wanted to go to Tennessee but he must be happy because now a rival with playcalling duties is removed. See how everything works at USC?

  1. This will give us a clear indication on how Martin is as a play caller. We will find out if he truly has the knack to the most effective call plays or if he is trying to pull rabbits out of his hat. If SC’s offense improves, then keep Martin. If not, then cut him loose. He was complaining about taking all the pressure, now let us see if he lives up to his title.

    • Agreed. Now we’ll find out what kind of a play caller Tee really is. You never know. He might turn into a good one. Like Helton, he’s another on-the-job trainee learning the craft from game to game. But both of them seemed to have learned quickly. They’re both a lot better at what they are doing than they were in the Alabama game.

  2. One down, at least 6 more to go, but it’s a start, hopefully.

Don’t be surprised if Tee11 is shown the door, Swann may have said one thing publicly after the Championship game and a whole lot more behind closed doors to Gomer

        • Is it Tee or Tyson who bugs Sam more?
Great question, Gabby —I hope the answer isn’t that it’s a tie. I have no inkling —-but I wonder if a great NFL quarterback coach would keep Sam at USC? I don’t think Sam thinks he’s ready for the NFL yet (and, if so, he’s 100% right). And, although it’s only a guess, I bet he’d like to develop a bit more under a great coach at USC before being fed to the NFL wolves.

    • Quit with the name calling it’s stale and childish. Give Helton some respect, others have by naming him a COY recipient

      • It does become harder to credibly call him Gomer when he’s been named Coach of the Year, no? Are the voters all Gomers too?

  3. Perfect move by USC here. Couple of more staff changes and we’re in business. Beat the Bucks and recruit a great class (OLs and DBs especially) – will be smaller this year.

    • Hopefully Tyson Helton leaves immediately, then we’ll find out exactly what type of offensive coordinator, Tee Martin really is, because he’ll be in the booth by himself during the Cotton Bowl

  4. Nobody on Clay Helton’s staff is more than a position coach, and not one of them would ever be rehired as a coordinator. Tyson Helton did the right thing by going to Tennessee, and I bet Clay reached out to Jeremy Pruitt, to see if he would take Tyson off of his hands, as oppose to Pruitt contacting USC .

    • What difference does it make? One problem solved. Lots of these staff changes everywhere are all inspired by behind-the-scene moves.

It’s great news for USC and reveals what some of us have been saying for months about changes coming. Turns out, we were right.

In the meantime, we’re headed to the Cotton to play OHIO ST and our best recruiter is still here headed into Dec. 20. Nice move by Helton.

  5. Glad he is down the road. Probably cleared out to help his brother because the grim reaper was coming. Now we need a quality defensive back coach to help the guys we got and hopefully attract some quality DB’s for the incoming class. We need more big uglies.

    • Need a new OL and special tams coach as well, and a new DC, he!!, we need a whole new staff !!!!!!

      • I can live with the DC, some of the assistants, not so much.

(new meds? you seem more reasonable today)

  6. The reports I see T Helton will be the OC for Tennessee, not the QB coach, good move for him, may mean Martin is here to stay, Helton will be back near West. Kent. Despite what you trolls think, SC did not dump TH, he got a great offer.

      • Riley is the perfect mentor for Smith. He is lucky to have Peterson & Riley in his corner. Riley is one of the true gentlemen in the game. He knows the game and he can knows OS better than anyone.

          • I live in the NW and have heard him on radio a lot. From the get-go Nebraska was going to be his last big hurrah. Win or lose. He’s home now and isn’t going anywhere

      • Well, not exactly. The one time I was at that stadium SC got behind by about 4 touchdowns, and Booty brought them back to within a 2-point conversion to tie, and his pass was batted down. The fans exploded onto the field. Actually, there was a small part of me that felt happy for them.

    • he belongs there. He grew up there and hopefully he stays there. He is good for OSU.

  7. I agree with the dude below. Of course, SW has to throw some shade and list the guy as QB coach. Why would he leave SC for the same gig at Rocky Top? Evidently he’s the new OC. Big job in a big conference, especially given the HC is a defensive guru. How about some love?

  8. Martin is leaving only for a HC job. That didn’t happen so he stays. Tyson is not going to be the OC anytime soon, an OC in the SEC is a big time job. He should help Tenn recruit, close to West. Kent.
Hopefully, SC gets someone great to replace him.

  9. So, did they hire a new head coach? I missed that. I wish him well, maybe he can help Tenn.
