The AP All-American Team Includes Two USC Players

Talk about a jarring Monday morning. The Associated Press released its All-American team and tailback Ronald Jones made the third team. And . . .  cornerback Jack Jones made the third team. Start the Heisman campaign.

I suspect Jack Jones was endorsed by at least one West region voter who helped select the team. And people see he had four interceptions. If he made the first team, he could get a plaque at the McKay Center.

In case you don’t believe, full team after the jump:

Can the kid really be blamed for being such a showboat? I imagine this isn’t the first time Jack Jones has undersevedly received an award based on rep (who knows how he got it in the first place).

I’d think I was all-that too if I was consistently being given acclaim for sucking. Props to Lane, Jack, Sark, and all the rest who manage to fail upward in life. They’ve certainly figured out something the rest of us haven’t.

    • CORTEZ THE KILLER

      Obama ???

      • Michael Guarino

What’s really cool is that 50% of America HELPED him fall upward. And would do it again, if they could.

        • steveg

The dumbing down of an entire nation.

  • steveg

Goes to show how few watch the pac12 football. Just read some stats and go vote.

    • gotroy22

It’s on too late for them.

      • Gabby

        Exactly!……

        • gotroy22

          He haunts us still?

            Sub-urban legend in palo alto

  • Sylvester

Jack Jones was a joke this season. However voted for him was a fool and obviously did not watch Trojan football this year.

    • Michael Guarino

I think it’s possible that Jack’s selection represented what is popularly called a “sympathy” vote. Did you see the poor, injured guy weeping into his white towel during the second half of the Pac 12 Championship game? [This was before he danced the night away at the post game party].

  • trojan_1972

Congrats to Rojo on a great regular season. I dont see Kerryon Johnson (second team) ahead of Rojo, but then again, SEC will always get the call over Pac-12.

    • Michael Guarino

To run for over 1500 yards behind USC’s 2017 o-line is an accomplishment that maybe even O.J. Simpson couldn’t match. Half Rojo’s yards were gained totally on speed and will. All things considered, an amazing feat. [And give Deland
McCullough tons of credit for getting his guys pumped and ready and never complaining about how hard their jobs were made by the lackadaisical play of the people up front].

      • trojan_1972

MG, right on the money. I’d like to see what Rojo (and Darnold) could do with an o-line like Oklahoma’s.

        • Gabby

Between the two, one wins the Heisman

        • Michael Guarino

With the aid of blockers —what a novel concept —Rojo’s numbers would have been astronomical. How many film clips are there of Rojo running for 10 or 12 more yards with 2 or 3 people clutching at him and no one with a USC jersey in sight?

          • trojan_1972

How many times did he turn -3 or -4, into positive yardage? Give him a good o-line, and perhaps his average yards per carry would be close to 7, and that he would have had 1700 or more yards.

          • Michael Guarino

Easily, trojan_1972. And beyond the personal record for Rojo, just think of what those kind of numbers would have meant in the Washington State and Notre Dame games. It really is a shame…on a lot of levels —that Rojo didn’t have more help. Like I said before, bless Rojo, Ware, Vavae and Carr …and Deland, too—for doing their jobs without pointing fingers. It couldn’t have been easy. [Maybe put Deland McCullough in charge of the backs AND the O-line]!

          • trojan_1972

“What if” better o-line and DB coaching…maybe next year?

          • Michael Guarino

Seriously—-we upgrade the coaching in those two areas—and keep Sam OR Rojo— and we’re in the playoffs. [And—if Sam and Rojo should both leave —-we HAVE to upgrade the coaching for these two units or 2018 won’t be pretty].

          • steveg

If they are going to upgrade the coaching staff are they waiting until after the bowl game to get started?

          • Michael Guarino

I hope so! Remember when Clay fired a bunch of coaches before the Holiday Bowl and we didn’t have enough hands on deck to prepare the team? I think the play here is to tell everybody they’re staying —-until the moment you tell them they’re leaving [….and that moment doesn’t arrive until after the bowl].

      • Gabby

“What if”…..RoJo gets a voice in his head telling him to come back for another year, and the voice spreads to Sam’s head………

        • Michael Guarino

Is there a way of ‘making’ this happen, Gabby? Didn’t Val Kilmer try something like it in the comedy “True Genius”?

          • Gabby

Great memory!…..I think I was still a teenager when that movie was released…..

          • Michael Guarino

Glad you remembered, Gabby. If you can figure out a way of getting that tin foil headset on Rojo, I’ll be happy to try to hypnotize him into staying by repeating the word “Heisman” into his ear piece. [We’ll do the same for Sam —-and work out how to handle the results later].

  • CORTEZ THE KILLER

    Jack Jones ????

  • CORTEZ THE KILLER

If we had a physical OL that had a competent, a head coach with a run first mentality and an OC with an IQ higher than a pencil eraser ROJO would have been a 1st teamer

  • Ed Garrett

writer, where is john rosen on this list of suposedly “good” foot ball players? and who is this david sills? why have we not herd abuot him b4?

    • Gabby

      Did you catch any cars?

    • Michael Guarino

I like being the only person beside you, Ed, that gets a kick out of your posts……

      • Pudly76

        How about me?

        • trojan_1972

It took me a while to partially decipher them…

        • Michael Guarino

Sorry. [I wish Ed figured out a way of liking himself more than once —-it would save us so much trouble, Pudly]……

          • Ed Garrett

there r some web cites u can go to if u need to like urself alot, but dont go to them in the libary or u get in trubble, beleive me,

          • Michael Guarino

What is this world coming to, Ed?
            #ThanksForSharing

          • trojan_1972

Ed, right down the middle of the fairway…

    • Chris

That kid deserves all of his accolades and looks like he will be playing on Sunday. This has to just torture Wolf, who hoped for his destruction. Can you imagine that? so bitter that you hope another fails. What a clown. Fight on Ed.

    • Pudly76

      I’m hating this..it hurts

  • Jeffrey Showalter

Great. Just what that idiot needs…reinforcement for playing badly and behaving like a jackass. FAKE NEWS!

  • Chris

Remember all that talent we have have winning all those games in spite of a staff trying to lose them? What happened? We should have 5,6,7 guys on this list, right?

I actually wish we did, I think Uchenna should be in here and possibly Cam. Jack should not.

    Fight on!

    • Sebastian Lane

You make a very valid point. This is a good, not elite team talent wise. Maybe the staff is better than people thought?

  • Tebow_Obama

Clay Helton underachieved in developing the Trojans 4 & 5 star roster filled talent…again.

    • Gabby

Hey wolf, is that you?…….same bad breath

  • Trojans 6942

This is why I put no stock in awards, people do not respect the process and do not watch the ( voters) games. It’s all a joke.

    • trojan_1972

JJ didn’t even make Pac-12 honorable mention…but makes 3rd team All American? I guess it is too much to expect due diligence on the part of the voters.

      • Gabby

        How do you explain that?

        (scratching my head)

    • Tebow_Obama

They watched that USC vs Alabama game, what has USC done to try and close the gap in developing their talent?

Helton is in way over his head when it comes to going head to head with the elite coaches outside the PAC 12 conference.

That’s just the way it is.

      • Gabby

More cleaning and less posting!……….Wolf left an extra load of fart-art around head #3, be prepared

      • Trojans 6942

Mr. Tebow, What does your comment have to do with mine. It had nothing to do with USC. But if u want to be a hater and a frustrated UCLA fan, all the power to you.

  • Tebow_Obama

Since Pete Carroll left USC is known as the place where 4 & 5 star talent goes to die.

USC hires second rate coaching staffs and people are shocked that the Trojans are no longer contenders, but reduced to pretenders.

    • Chris

Second rate staff, says the guy whose one trick pony coach has been canned twice in the last 3 years.

  • Linkster

This pretty much sums up a lot of what these polls, recruitment lists, etc. really are. That would bushwacky. Good for Ronald Jones, he is certainly most deserving. Frankly, I would take him before Love of Stanford. But Jack Jones, are you kidding? What a joke. I am sure he is a nice young man but certainly not an all American. All this 4-5* talent that USC has was bogus as the rating services all use different criteria to make their rankings. Some kid in Ukiah has a big year and he is a 4* and then another kid at the same position in a much tougher competitive environment is a 3*. Who would you rather have? the guy in the tough league is for me.

  • Gabby

    Where is Uchenna Nwosu?……..total snub!

    • Tebow_Obama

Helton snubbed Nwosu. Nwosu has been at USC for a long time, why did Helton have him sitting on the bench until this year?

      • Gabby

        Ask Helton then report back

      • FranklinTrojan

he was a starter last year. came in as a 3 star safety needed time to develop into a linebacker

        • trojan_1972

          Great success story.

          • Gabby

I wish him success in the NFL

            FIGHT ON!

        • Gabby

Thanks for helping tebone out. He struggles with this stuff…..thanks again

        • Pudly76

Facts don’t ever get in his way, he posts what he wants with reckless disregard of the truth.

    • steveg

Really, a total miss by the media. Truly one of the nations best.

  • Pac12 fan

The Jack Jones as third team is a joke. Did anybody who voted for him watch him play? Yhis is an insult to much worthy players on the Trojan team

  • Pac12 fan

Based on this. My guess is Jack Jones will be favorite to win Pac12 player of the year next year. This certainly wont curtail his behavior

  • Jack B

JJ over Nwosu? Martians have landed.

    • Pudly76

      My thoughts exactly, wth

    • EncinitasBruin

Agree. Jordan Lasley is laughing. Nwosu is not.

  • John Stewart

People hating on Jack Jones are way off base. He will most likely play in the nfl. He would lock a receiver down for 65 snaps and get beat twice but they happen to be for tds and then everyone says he sucks. Sometimes it would appear he got beat and he was doing exactly what he was supposed to do and it was the safety that was supposed to be over the top but bit on play action. He was easily our best corner this year largely because of his short memory. I watched Josh Norman get toasted twice for long TD’s, yesterday the highest paid corner in the NFL. That is the life of a corner!

    • Jack B

Our best DB by far was Chris Hawkins, and it’s not even close.

To say JJ was our best corner over Grabby (as in Mr. PI) is like saying a killer whale is more dangerous than a white shark, if you’re in the water. It doesn’t matter.

In the case of our poor, overmatched CBs, they were a laughing stock much or the time. Both got routinely beat, gave up numerous critical plays and also offered poor run support much of the time. JJ’s too little and all-mouth. Grabby has no hips and is obviously a S, but he’s not good enough there to beat out Hawkins, Tell or even Lopes.

    • Michael Guarino

Maybe we are all being too tough on Jones, maybe his penalties are mostly bad calls, maybe he should get more help from the safeties —-but —-as for being stuck on an island —-that’s how Clancy wants it. Adoree got beat a few times too. It happens. But he never looked lost. Jack has looked lost in every game since the Rose Bowl. And don’t think Coach Meyer hasn’t noticed.

  • Isaiahdolan

SW, your favorite all time super coach/player Sam D was not on the list? Why?

  • David Keeling

    Jack Jones wins what?
