Post-Practice Report

Tyson Helton was not at practice and is not coaching the Cotton Bowl. Tee Martin said he expects to remain at USC as offensive coordinator. He said he was never interested in the offensive coordinator’s job at Tennessee.

Wide receiver Tyler Vaughns left practice with an injured shoulder. Ronald Jones tweaked his ankle as did wide receiver Velus Jones. Clay Helton did not sound optimistic about Porter Gustin (toe) playing in the Cotton Bowl.

Good news! Porter Gustin is “day to day” —-meaning he’ll probably be good to go by the 29th.
Bad news! Now that Tyson is gone, why isn’t Tee coaching Sam? Is Tee going to take Sam over soon? Or is Sam on his own getting ready for OHIO STATE? [That would be crazy].

    • steveg

If we have to go through next season with Martin as OC, I sure hope he will be able to take the heat better than last season cuz it is all on him.

I like the idea of Colbert doing WR’s and Martin doing QB. Hope Helton likes it too. I would think Sam can’t make a move without every coach on the team watching.

Keep playing down Gustin’s being able to play, then start him.

      • Gabby

“Keep playing down Gustin’s being able to play, then start him.”

I like your thoughts. A little bait and switch.

      • Michael Guarino

With regard to Porter, I think you’ve guessed Helton’s plan: Say it’s too close to call right up to game time —and then play him!
Helton looked genuinely confused on what he’s doing in terms of coaching up Sam for the Cotton Bowl. Is that crazy? We’ve known that Tyson was leaving for days now!

        • steveg

I can guarantee you that Helton will have Sam up for the game, or he should be a casualty of the tarmac. No AD worth anything would let them go into the game of the year and not be prepared. Perhaps this will be telling about more than Helton.

          • rusoviet

‘Helton will have Sam up for the game…’? You think Darnold needs Helton to get him pumped to play another New Year’s Eve weekend game having played in one a mere year ago that was deemed better than the AL vs. Clemson NC game?

Helton is of no relevance save for ‘Helton’ to focus closer on the antics of the other players on the sideline and elsewhere i.e.

Sam is the reason Helton is still employed.

          • steveg

I could have said that differently, Sam will be prepared for the game, getting up is entirely a different thing. Relax.

          • rusoviet

Darnold is the sole reason Helton is still employed.

Think before you post such steve.

Before I read your rationalization understand Darnold is the sole reason Helton is still the head coach at USC

          • steveg

I do disagree with you, but I can see you are on the testy side tonight so let’s let it go. I just got a bottle of 18 year old Highland Park and am beyond enjoying it.

          • rusoviet

Whatever you want to act like you’ve taken the ‘higher ground’ with me. Hey why not smoke a doobie while you’re at it on a week night and chase it with a Montecristo –

Helton is a nice guy and a farce to have this program under his control.

          • steveg

I disagree with you on your point that Sam is the sole reason Helton is still employed. If you had said the resurrection of the USC program from the chaos that preceeded his hiring I would agree as the sole reason. He has brought a sense of team, a calmness, a civility, and taken nothing but crap in doing it. Swann has stood by him because he sees that USC is rebuilding it’s program, but it is also rebuilding its prestige and reputation, slowly.

If you want a peeing contest over all this, sorry, you want a doobie, go ahead. I don’t.

          • rusoviet

Ok – deem me as the ‘meanie’ here. That’s what many do when they haven’t a real counter to what the sense of what many are seeing – Helton is a nice guy that’s all he is.

            Weenie not meanie

Thanks, it’s all good. Debate makes people think.

          • Chris

You and I watch totally different football games.

          • Pudly76

You’re a useless fool and I am glad you were. No way near my kids when they were in their formative years.. mr football expert, who’s never been to practice or meetings..just full of it

          • rusoviet

Go away little man – up late this morning – 3:00 am?

          • Pudly76

Hey stinky you sucjk, trying to bully people..ha, you’re just a joke..never played a game in your life ,,,a wannabe if ever there was. Hahahaha

          • Pudly76

You change your message after you post, trying to be the bully, wow great roll model, glad we’ve got you helping our kids grow into adulthood. To bad there isn’t malpractice for teachers as you’d certainly qualify…your just a dolt. You can’t stand Helton has made a fool of you by winning 21 games his first two years..it must drive you absolutely up the coconut tree knowing he was chosen by Haden..that’s right Pat Haden, who’ll always be a thousand times more revered than a drunk unstable miscreant such as yourself.

          • rusoviet

I have been, admittedly, excessive very excessive in my lack of respect for Clay helton as a head coach for USC – never have I questioned him as a decent individual and never will. My sole point has always been my assessment of his coaching skills.

You have no idea how ridiculous you look right now with these posts – none if you did you would have pulled back before you hit ‘post’.

          • Pudly76

Read the stuff you posted last night and tell who looks bad, nothing you say any more carries validity, certainly with me and I’d say at this point with anyone who’s ever been in a locker room..you don’t have any validity. There are many who question Helton’s qualities as a coach, just none who have become so aggressive in their positions as to repeatedly go after people who post positively about the team. Your so obsessed, you can’t even see it..you can’t even have a reasonable discussion anymore without it breaking down into put downs and name calling..
I’ll say again, re-read your your posts from last night..civility still counts

      • rusoviet

I agree….consider Tyson booking for TN …now ‘Clay’ can silently ignore any queries re. offensive ineptitude completely.

A ‘boom’ for Tee and also makes Clay act more like a head coach rather than an enabler to his brother and mind you to taking anything from he brother rather let’s see how ‘Clay’ ‘mans up’ because, bluntly, until he rips the sideline antics and the idiocy of Jones as well as the indifference of 3rd and goal from the 4 yard line this is still a program that has promoted an individual from Conference USA who coaches as if he is still in Conference USA

    • CORTEZ THE KILLER

He should never have been rushed back, that was total malpractice by the USC medical staff

      • Gabby

        I agree with you!

The stars must be aligned… LoL!…… For some reason I don’t think he has my name in his rolodex

      • trojan_1972

Think twice before going to the USC Foot docs

        • Pasadena Trojan

My question is, did Porter want to come back that soon or was he cleared by the doctor’s? Was Porter wanting to play to impress scouts and if so, why didn’t the doctor’s declare him not fit?

          • gotroy22

            Who goofed?

      • Old Trojans never die

One thing to add. Why the heck did they not find/ develop/ train a replacement?
Otherwise I agree and wonder why a redshirt wasn’t sought.

      • Pete Smith

What if Porter is healthy enough to play. will he be able to step back into the game at the same level when he left? He’s been out now for a while? Where are his skill level at? I want him back, but only if he can step into the shoes before his injury. Fight on

An actual football relevant post. Christmas comes early.

The injuries continue to mount even when nothing is going on, but “practice.” This a paper THIN USC team that needs to lift some weights.

the thing people have to remember is bryan ellis was quality control for tee martin this past year he was also a qb in college. as for Colbert he will be moved to wide receiver coach next year, as of now what I been seeing is tee martin having plenty of time coaching sam darnald these first two practices. ellis is just a figure head at this moment. swann has done his part to clean up staff by asking clay to remove his brother from all coaching duties. now its up to these players to perform for there school and clay helton if you wanna see him around next year, as for gustin he told me more than likely he will not play. if he does play he will only be at 80 percent
