USC Morning Buzz: About The Defensive Backs

I mentioned speaking to an NFL defensive coordinator over the weekend. One thing I was curious about was what he thought about the defensive backs.

“(Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast) doesn’t protect his corners,” he said. “He doesn’t like to change coverages. Sometimes you move your best corner off the best wide receiver to boost his confidence. USC doesn’t do that. They are very predictable.”

I suppose none of this should surprise anyone. On the other hand, Pendergast could respond he has a third-team All-American cornerback.

You’re advocating we should move our best off of their best? I completely understand why you were never a coach.

    • Gabby

So we can match our #2 DB with their #1 WR because the #1 DB has confidence issues. One of wolf’s most unintelligent comments ever. And the guy wonders why we continually mock him

      • Michael Guarino

I guess—-sometimes—Scott goes a bit too far to generate debate. Maybe it’s best not to comment on this post. Maybe it’s best to just frame it….under the title “Exhibit A.”

        • Gabby

You’re right. enough said, case closed

          • Michael Guarino

Yeah, Gabby. I guess one exhibit is all we need in this case.

      • ItsAllAboutTheBall

It was the NFL guy saying that (at least according to Wolfie), which is still one of the most unintelligent comments ever. So Helton should have taken Adoree off of John Ross & Will Fuller after he gave up long scores?

Yes Wolf, I am sure you met with several nfl dignitaries over the weekend.

Anyone heard anything about Daniels perhaps going in 2018 class?

  • Old Trojans never die

I agree… our defensive backs need more training. This is evident in almost every game where the other team has amassed yardage against our average pass coverage at the end of the game..
But Pendergast coaches the front end of the defense and this is the backside (using a funny term here) of the defense. It is almost predictable our front end guys harass the quarterback until they are gassed. This is allowing the quarterback more time to throw to open receivers because our rear-end is covered by slap happy high-fiving glory hounds who get mixed up as to where the ball is. We need a defensive backfield coach.

    • Michael Guarino

In my opinion, your post completely nails it. OT. Pendergast’s philosophy is to bring heat, in lots of different packages, on almost every play…..so every opposing coach plans for having about two and a half to three seconds to get the ball to whomever Jack Jones is covering. And the deeper we get into a game, the more balls fly at jack’s receiver. Since Jack hasn’t shown the slightest improvement at staying on his man all season, he becomes Coach Meyer’s ace in the hole in the Cotton Bowl.

    • Brent4c

Our DBs weakest skill is in ball skills. They are often close enough to make plays they just lack ball skills. Unfortunately this is fairly common in DBs which is why they are in that side of the ball. This isn’t a free pass for them or Bradford, just trying to parse out the problem beyond they suck.

      • Old Trojans never die

Yes and when they take a shot it’s always to be a hero rather than make the play. Half the time if they had just tried to bat the ball down, they would have been more effective than missing the interception. Only go for an interception in two instances; one if you have coverage backing you up and two if it is a sure thing.

  • Gabby

“Sometimes you move your best corner off the best wide receiver to boost his confidence”

Wolf, please don’t believe what Killer tells you, he is not a NFL defensive coordinator, past or present. Another example of your low football IQ.

    .

    • Michael Guarino

YOU are the one who doesn’t understand football, Gabby. Everybody knows that you leave the other team’s best receiver completely ALONE. When facing teams with multiple outstanding receivers, it’s probably best to put your defensive backs on ineligible linemen. Worrying about imaginary concepts like “coverage” (what does that amorphous term even really mean?) is only going to result in future insecurity issues for your DB’s.

That’s it! You solved the ‘big mystery’! Hillary started out kinda cute (except for her butt). And, over the years, she became more and more ‘unfortunate’ looking. I always wondered, ‘why is this?’ It’s cuz she’s always arguing with people —on television, on the street, in bookstores, etc. [Luckily, she’s already married, though —so, in a way, her story ends ‘happily ever after’].

According to you Scott, I am pretty sure we aren’t predictable. I am certain you just wrote about our corners changing technique on every play. Your NFL guys are a little confused as to what we do.

Wasn’t that a comment from one of his earlier posts?

  • Sas

I turned 36 today. It’s just another day, I only want a hot meal tonight when I get home.
A Win in the Cotton Bowl would be a great present. I’d take that Win as a Christmas gift. JUST WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam sorry your birthday wish won’t come true… sorry but not sorry! As for the hot meal, you could swing by the southern cal campus and get yourself a burrito from the burrito hot box!

My friend I am truly sorry that I am the bearer of bad tidings!

      • Sas

        Ted,
I’ve known you a good while and I know how to decipher your personality. What you really mean is Happy Birthday and Fight On!

        • Michael Guarino

That’s the same interpretation I gave it, Sam!
I think Ted was TRYING to say that USC won’t be able to beat Ohio State for your Christmas present because the game is scheduled for the 29th. I think he was TRYING to say that he’s sorry about the game coming after Christmas but he’s not sorry because he knows that USC will win and that we can all enjoy the victory on the 29th —even though that date is after the 25th!

        Thanks GT22.

Man, I haven’t been here as long as some some of you OG’s, but i remember the first time I was called out/challenged years ago after a few months as the new guy. I simply disagreed with Fred Sampson on Bob Stoops taking some SC recruits and next thing you know Jack B is in my face………..Then you telling me that I can’t post because I’m not an SC alumn. But I kept coming back.

It’s all about the memories. JK.

        But thanks buddy!!!

  • Golden Trojan

Special Teams seems to be the most disorganized group. Baxter has run a tighter ship in the past. How much is him or the players only those on the inside know. Some changes with the defensive staff might be needed, but again only those truly on the inside know what needs to be done.

  • CORTEZ THE KILLER

Clancy needs to go. He himself has stated that his defense ” is complicated, that’s why I’m hesitant to play Fr & So. ”

Clancy doesn’t recruit, won’t recruit, doesn’t sit in the press box to get a better view of the game, the list is endless with this moron, FIRE HIM ALREADY !!!!!!!!

Play by play guys frequently point this out. It is a wonder they don’t get smoked more often.

  • B.Miller

We already knew that.. he doesn’t like to substitute either so he doesn’t protect his players at all..
The stats do not lie.. USC finished 76th in total defense.. At some point we are going to need to acknowledge the scheme?

  • Michael Guarino

    Yes!

  • Michael Guarino

Hope you got that hot meal last night, Sam! [That’s not too much for a guy to ask for on his birthday, right]?
