In the eight seasons since Pete Carroll left USC, the Trojans lost 32 games. In 16 seasons as a head coach, Urban Meyer has lost 31 games.

  1. Meyer’s total for 31 losses is over 17 full seasons not 16.

    He’s won ‘3’ NC’s (FL 2 OH St. 1)

This is going to be an interesting game to watch

  2. In the eight seasons since Pete Carroll left USC, Scott Wolf has eaten 32 dozen donuts per USC win. Which is more than any other beat writer during that time span.

  3. What’s Meyer’s bowl record at Ohio State? Could it be .500?

    • Wolf’s perspective is that of a jealous UCLA or ND fanboy who likes to dress up in a USC jersey to feel better about himself when in public.

        • Noticed this morning on the bama site that poor nicky saban was complaining how hard it was to recruit the last 2 weeks.. they didn’t even have a conference championship game to play and they don’t start bowl prep till next week. Helton has another inhome visit tonight. Crazy.

          • Nuttiest thing ever, Pudly. When it comes to recruitment, let’s penalize the coaches who made it to a bowl game (and reward the ones who didn’t).

          • Of course the intention was to allow the kids who wanted the process over with to end it earlier, but I’m curious as to how the late coaching changes will affect these kids..as always happens after the bowl games and the end of the nfl season, firings occur and the carrousel starts anew.

          • It wouldn’t look too hot if Helton shut Meyer out and we, then, fired Helton in order to get Meyer.
            #ButThatDoesn’tMeanWeWouldn’tDoIt….

    • He’s 3 – 2 but those are major major games

2012 OH St. ineligible due to Tressel’s previous antics but had a record of 12 – 0 regular season and # 3 ranking
      2013 11 – 1 reg / lost the Orange Bowl to # 12 Clemson)
      2014 11 – 1 reg / beat # 1 AL in Sugar then beat # 2 OR for NC
      2015 11 – 1 reg / beat # 8 notre dame Fiesta
      2016 11 – 1 reg / lost NC to Clemson

      • Crap! Do we have to count play off games, Alv? I like the way I “fixed” his record by only counting the final bowl game in 2014.

        • You’d better – it’s telling how USC – since 2005 hasn’t been in any meaningful post-season playoff Rose Bowl notwithstanding.

It is also why Meyer and OH St. are truly a formidable foe and those calling for Helton to be recruiting instead of ‘learning; how one wins a nationally televised out-of-the-running but Nielsen bonanza that the Cotton Bowl will be this year’ are nuts.

The odds makers have the point spread right (-7/7.5 OH St.).

          • I would love it if ALL USC’s attention was on this bowl game, Alv. Ali said one time that “there’s always a better plan behind your original plan.” I’m sure we’ll have a good game plan —I just don’t know if the staff is SO obsessed with winning that they’ll find “the plan behind the plan.” It’s probably a blend of the two tight end attack used by Iowa and the bombs away plan used by Oklahoma. But the perfect game plan for Ohio State is out there—if we’re willing to search night and day for it until Christmas.
            Every detail matters!

          • Mike you and many have noted how ‘…caught in the headlamps….’ Helton looked as he made note of his brother moving on to TN last week.

I sense Clay Helton is re-living what he didn’t know prior to the season opener for 2016 against AL.

Great coaches embrace the horrific challenge – they realize they need to fight through it or as we say as a program ‘fight on’. Not convinced Helton wants anything to do with that strategy based on others stating he need’s to recruit and have his assistants coach.

The fence sitters, recruit wise, will choose based on what they see on the 29th not on what Helton or anyone says before that

          • It’s a fricking shame, Alv —-but this year, for this game —-all attention should be on prep for Ohio State. It would be HUGE for our program to take this game. I’m so crazy obsessed with this game it even bothered me when Helton said he wanted everybody to go home and enjoy Turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie for Christmas. When fighters are getting ready for a championship, it’s fish and vegetables….and a half hour off for Christmas. The team that wins this game will be the team that deserves to win this game. I hope that team is us.

          • Helton is a decent man and he sees the kids need a break. It isn’t his style to be suddenly acting like Sabin or Hayes or Coryell et. al.

The problem i see is that Helton doesn’t seem to be working on ‘counters’ from OH St. esp. ones that will be imposed in the 2nd half.

I don’t think he honestly has the grey matter to do such otherwise he’d have shown such this year esp. in all those near losses in the 2nd half – the kill stroke.

He reminds me a lot of Ray Malavasi – can’t believe he’s gotten to where he has and no one else can either.

          • Two differences between Malavasi and Coach Helton:
            (1) Helton’s players PLAY for him
            (2) Helton doesn’t look like he’s been eating bags of concrete for lunch and dinner.

          • Got that and Helton hasn’t (yet) fired his staff. He still reminds me of Malavasi in terms of wondering how he is where he is.

          • You have to admit, Alv, that Ray Malavasi would probably kill for Helton’s won/loss record….

  4. “Don’t Trust Stats

This is why I’m not a stats guy: Sam Darnold 19-35 266 yards. Manny Wilkins 17-29, 259 yards #USCvsASU”

After reading the list of stats from the past few weeks, I suppose this is where you realize there’s a “Wolf” for everything.

      • Yeah, he’s also the guy who picked SC to go 10-2 and then lose to Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship game… yet says they didn’t live up to expectations by going 11-2 and beating Stanford in said Championship.

      • He’ll call Petros, and they’ll try and fail to get one word out because all the studdering while in tears.

  5. There is a lot to be said for stability then. Maybe once we settle on a coach we can amass a record that Scott will approve.

  6. With early signing approaching, Is it too much to ask for discussion about that?

With McGrath and Budrovich earning scollies, we are now at 85 with 10 SRs and 11 commits. Yes, we will surely have 1-4 early enrollees, but we will not likely have more than 15 slots open.

This will be a tiny class. Getting 4 OLs and 4 LBs doesn’t look possible. Who won’t we get of:

    Jalen
    Hall

    Amon-Ra St.
    Brown

    Isaac
    Taylor-Stuart

    Merlin
    Robertson

    Jeremiah Martin

    Solomon Tuliaupupu

    Penei Sewell

Will Jacob Daniel Transfer? Cole Smith, Dom Davis?

Will we de-commit anyone? Andre Hunt for Hall or St. Brown?
    Kana’i for Merlin or Solomon

    • I think Hall is going to Oregon. Robertson is close to committing to Oklahoma. I’m not 100% sure so if I am behind on any news my bad, but I believe that’s where those two are at with USC

    • I appreciate your changing the subject, Hoo. Scott’s note was little more than provocative, and what followed was pretty dull.

Do you think your projected recruiting shortfall stems more from lack of strong planning, or from uncertainty about which coaches will be around, and which will not?

      • Hey Ben.

with the performance of the OL and the possible prospects numbering 3 to add to 3 commits — not to mention not rock stars — I am very concerned about planning, both on the part of CH (which coaches will be around) and our O-LOL coach.
