A 10-Year Deal Sounds Good

One can argue for-or-against USC’s firing of women’s volleyball coach Mick Haley. One detail that stood out from the Volleyball Magazine interview was Haley saying he wanted a 10-year contract when USC gave him a five-year contract in 2013.

A 10-year deal? Are we talking about Jimbo Fisher? A 10-year contract for a 69-year-old volleyball coach? That sounds pretty good if you could get it. Maybe Clay Helton can try it with Lynn Swann.

No coaches contract should go beyond 5 years. People change, the games change, and the politics change. Even Saban and Fisher in my opinion, but a volleyball coach for sure. Some people just over value themselves.

    • Jack B

Swann pushed Haley out on the downswing. The last flopperoo against UF was enough to make you scream if you followed USC women’s VB.

Haley needed to go. Hopefully, he doesn’t get a dime more to clean out his office. Too bad he couldn’t just leave with some grace and find another gig for 2-3 years as he’s obviously not ready to quit. Good for him. And good for USC for pushing forward to get a younger coach with some newer ideas and insights which always evolve in any sport.

  • Paul Muad’dib

Is this Scott Wolf admitting that USC did the right thing?…

    • steveg

      Hard to believe.

  • rusoviet

Well he foolishly assumed he was worth it and unlike Arte Moreno’s idiocy giving such to Albert Pujols – I have to assume USC AD Lynn Swann gladly agreed to pull back on the offer and have the overweight elderly coach go elsewhere at his age and see who’d offer him a +5 deal. Haley did what all do when they ‘step in it’ – he filed suit.

          Thank you your honor. lol

          • Michael Guarino

Very funny, steveg. [I never said “your honor” when addressing judges—they never seemed to deserve it]……

          • steveg

What did you call them? (to their face)

          • Michael Guarino

I tried to stay away from actually addressing them personally. Transcripts looked funny cuz there would be one attorney saying “thank you, your honor” over and over ….and me saying just “thank you.”

          • gotroy22

            So subtle!

          • Michael Guarino

You really have to train yourself.

    • Gabby

Same comment 603 times(new recount)…….Pop Warner parents are not happy with your coaching….you disappoint me

  • Michael Guarino

Update Trojan fans: (1) Porter Gustin is FINALLY out of his protective boot! (2) Sam Darnold says that Tyson Helton’s absence is forcing him to take on more of a leadership role in the QB room —-which is a good thing! (3) Sam says he’s seen all of Ohio State’s defensive schemes and disguises before —just not run as fast. But he’s pumped about being ready for their speed.
    All good signs.

    • Gabby

      Thanks for the gumball, Michael

Is Porter projected to be ready for the CB?

      • Michael Guarino

Dan Weber seems to think that Porter is ready to go —-but the USC doctors might be a little gun shy about letting him play (after their recent fiascoes) unless they’re convinced he’s close to 100%. Personally, I think he plays for at least a few critical series (based on how slyly & uncharacteristically secretive Clay has been about his readiness).

        • Jack B

USC doctors can just screw his toe back on after the game. We just need to Gustin to sign a pre-game liability waiver and we’re set!

          • Michael Guarino

Knowing Porter, he’d say, “show me the dotted line!!”

          • Trojans 6942

Just get two sacks. Afterwards we can take him behind the barn and shoot him. Lol

          • Michael Guarino

How ’bout Porter gets 3 sacks ….and we carry him off the field a hero after we’ve won?

          • Trojans 6942

            Even better

          • gotroy22

Who cares if he sustains permanent damage? We are talking the Cotton Bowl!

          • steveg

What are you saying Jack, just shoot it up and put him out there? LOL Gustin at 75% is still a solid player.

          • Gabby

just shoot it up and put him out there, typical…LOL!

          • gotroy22

Give him the needle as they said in North Dallas Forty.

    • StokaNoka

Ya know, when I joined this blog 3 months ago, I must’ve misunderstood the “inside usc” part. I thought it would actually come from the posts… now I see it’s only from the comments. Thx for the info

      • Gabby

We’ve petition the DN to changed the name to “Outside USC” by Scott Wolf……

  • Pudly76

I’m hearing McClain has flipped to SC..rumors

    • Jack B

If it really happened, wouldn’t it be a tweet fact and not just a rumor? How strong are these rumors IYO?

      • Pudly76

This one is fairly strong, my brothers grandson is a good friend of the family, they go to school together, carpool etc., he was the one who told me about his visit this weekend

        • Pudly76

At the end of the day, until he signs, if he does, it is a rumor.

          • Jack B

Let’s face it. Some rumors are true. It’s fun to see which ones are. Thanks for the info about your family insight. Your bro’s grandson shall be permanently labeled henceforth as yea or nea!

          • Pudly76

            And rightly so…

          • Jack B

These are important matters Pud! Can’t afford to get our hopes up, only to be dashed with the infamous disclaimer, “But anything can happen.”

I think your family source is great here. Now, the real info is why doesn’t he go public? There are often reasonable reasons for this. But sometimes it just means no decision has really been made yet. Wed should be some though it seems USC isn’t in for too much excitement unless we have a bunch of secret commits.

          • steveg

Right on, USC closes fast every year. This year is really going to be different though in terms of silent commits I think.

        • j metaphor

He’s right, I heard the same thing from a guy at Starbucks who knows the Uber driver that gave his uncle a ride to Knott’s Berry Farm.

Poor Bobble Head Ed. He needs a rival USC site to practice his gibberish persona. Cute, don’t you think?

      • Michael Guarino

Three guesses as to what Ed is doing right now, steveg……

  • Pudly76

    Andre Hunt decommits from SC.

  • Yale O. Leftwich

nothing surprises me when sc hires and or fires, they never do anything with class any more…Haley is a premiere coach; although certainly near the end of a splendid career …sc should have extended him at least a couple years, with options.

    • Jack B

I tell you who is a premier coach – that woman who crushed Haley down the stretch, guiding UF to huge comeback over suddenly hapless USC.

Seems to me like Haley had a pretty good swing at the plate at USC. At the age of 74, I don’t see why USC should have waited until 77 to let him go. USC’s a pretty coveted position, I’m sure.

Recently, he’s been a good coach. But not great. No way. STAN has taken over women’s VB in the west (except for sand, where we dominate totally). I don’t see what’s so great about that. And I’m sure Swann’s access to inside info made him want to pull the trigger now, not later.

      • Yale O. Leftwich

we see things differently don’t we….he did not lose to Florida, those girls gave their all and he coached them well, they were close and they did play in THE CHAMPIONSHIP ,so they were a great team….I spent with 3 daughters over a dozen years with club in S.Calif + high schools and D1 scholarships…he is one of the best ever and still like at my age 74 has plenty of mental acuity for the game…but you just carry on

        • Jack B

Great team? Don’t be silly. This USC outfit finished a mediocre 25-10 and lost its final Nov match to ucla 0-3. And when the chips were down in the regional against the Gators, UF completely stomped USC to come back and win going away 11-3. USC was totally helpless.

I never said Haley wasn’t one of the best ever. But he’s over-the-hill, relatively speaking, now, and hasn’t won a NC since 2003.

Other people on this board who also know VB very well think he doesn’t currently measure up to the nation’s bet.

I look forward to Swann’s new hire here. Hopefully, Haley latches on somewhere else and can continue coaching in a game he obviously loves.

          • Yale O. Leftwich

anytime a team finishes in the elite 8 final 4 they are one of the best and usually the breaks and officiating settle that…we disagree…perhaps we will agree on something some day, not today

          • Jack B

Big difference between elite 8 and final 4. Just ask STAN and UF, the teams that easily beat USC during the season (STAN twice , 3-0, 3-1) and UF when it counted.

I would never call 2017 a great USC women’s VB team. Our sand team, winners of three straight NCs, is truly great and Haley’s team is completely mediocre compared to that.

          • Yale O. Leftwich

we disagree…guess unless one wins the ncaa championship in that sport the coach stinks…got it…good thing you were no SC fan in football in the 50’s like I was;now go peddle your tripe with those who agree with you they are all over this page and will love your comments…

          • Jack B

Don’t be a jerk old man. I never said Haley stinks. That’s strictly your word, punk.

Now get over it. Unless you can’t.

          • Yale O. Leftwich

I’m over it plus…I didn’t ask for your comments I merely stated what I think, you think only an ncaa championship in a sport makes a great team,we disagree; few coaches and few teams go undefeated and his 35-0 team did ; how many have done that and 17 straight years in the ncaa playoffs…so you let go…and I take your comment about my age, etc… as a compliment

          • Jack B

I don’t care whether you asked for my comments or not. Doesn’t matter to me one iota.

You’re so off here, it’s laughable. I never said a team has to be undefeated or perfect to be “great”. That another one of your mischaracterizations, just like your usage of the word “stink”. You’re quite a little manipulator.

You clearly don’t grasp what the word great means since you stated this 2017 Haley-coached VB team was “great”. Not even close. Great teams don’t lose a whopping 10 games and choke away a win in the regionals to a team they have on the ropes. It was probably the biggest choke job in USC women’s VB history, and you call that great. That’s just flat out dumb on your part, regardless of how old you are.

          • Yale O. Leftwich

ok…and your comments about my evals are exactly what I see about your evals…now we can ignore each other

          • Jack B

Anyone who thinks this choker 2017 USC women’s VB team was great is an idiot. Go ahead and ignore that.

      • j metaphor

    • rusoviet

They owe him nothing any more than a: NBA, MLB, NHL or NFL owe any of their ‘legendary’ players’ at the end of a huge contract another 3 – 4 year deal. They were all well paid and had all the perks that go with a top tier position. You took some other starter’s place – now it’s your turn to get out.

Aside from an individual who founded a corporation name me anyone that would give a 74 year old individual (coach) >5 years because it’s his due based on his self centered ‘wah wah’ idiocy good riddance to this pompous back end of a horse and kudos for Lynn holding fast.

      • Yale O. Leftwich

you fit right in to that culture

        • rusoviet

Pray tell what ‘culture’ is that? Yours is the culture of ‘I’m owed’ mind you I am already 74 years of age and have had this gig for 17 straight years but somehow some way I am entitled to departing on my terms and if not I have grounds for suit.’

I am betting Swann has ‘heard’ that USC womens volleyball should have won a ‘nc’ since 2003 regardless of approaching the playoffs as a top tier seed. They haven’t and that’s probably been used by other programs to lure players away because ‘porky’ has missed a few steps over the past 14 years.

          • Yale O. Leftwich

you don’t like what I think and I don’t like what you think…suck it up buttercup

          • rusoviet

Fair enough and yes I have no sympathy for someone who is his age demanding they have a better offer (10 years) than the one offered by their current employer (5 years).

          • Yale O. Leftwich

I do agree with you on that; if he asked for a 10 yr that is ludicrous,I did not read that; I think a couple and an eval after would have been appropriate at 74 yrs of age….bye

          • rusoviet

Appreciate your noting that and sorry for my noting his appearance. My concern if I were a USC athletic director would be Haley’s health going forward esp. travel and stress in any close match.

  • schammer47

Go for it, Coach Helton !!!

  • Yale O. Leftwich

    FYI… in No.Va

On Wednesday, Cravens shared some footage on social media that he claims he took on his cell phone after he was pulled over for driving 39 mph in a 35-mph zone (the police report said 39 mph in a 25-mph zone). After he was stopped, Cravens says an officer “slammed” him against his car, handcuffed him and searched his vehicle. The 22-year-old said he was with his younger brother, and police claimed they smelled marijuana.
