      • Pretty funny.

We do need to seriously upgrade our evaluation of CBs, based on the over-rated dudes we have. Just have to trust that Helton is aware of this. I don’t see how he couldn’t be.

This new DB coach we have coming in should really help in the future, though it’s probably too late for this signing class.

      • We don’t need Corners, well we need them to keep coming to SC in that regard. But we don’t need them as in ours are bad. It’s not them is RONNIE. YES, he’s coached the three 5-Star CB’s on our team and luckily Adores played like the athlete that impressed Swoon Sanders all week in Under Armour practice 4 years ago. Biggie, Jack-Jack, Langley, the kid from Bishop Amat, those kids are a product of being left with handlers that aren’t fit to be near them. Demetrius Martin (who I’ve heard is a strong candidate) could do a lot better and it won’t take a year.

  1. This recruiting class so far shows USC has to beat Ohio St to become what they want to be. Looks like the staff, at least the ones that put in the recruiting effort need to really step it up. The ones that don’t recruit at least need to be able to coach up. If they don’t do either they need to be gone.

    • I’d say a large number of quality players are understandably hedging their bets to see what coaches and their staff are /were prepared to win a critical post-season bowl game rather than blindly choose prior to the dust settling.

  2. Many are going crazy because USC missed on several kids.. It is what it is.. The early enrollee’s and signees get a leg up on training and school. February will determine the big picture if USC did well in the 2018 class. 11 kids signed and 14 to go.. USC is 24th with these 11.. Should finish strong and in the top 10.. Lets just hope for the best..

    • 11 kids signed and 14 to go…Clearly, you have no idea.

We currently have 85 players on scholarship,10 of which are SRs. Even if an unlikely number leave early (5 leave early for the NFL and 3 transfer), we don’t come close to 25 spots for this recruiting class. 15 or 16 in this class is possible, 14 is likely.

Missing Carman and possibly Sewell IS HUGE because there are no other prospects of that quality to bring into the OL.

        • I was just quoting Dan (and should have used quotes!) 7 is what I see as well. I was assuming he meant 7 signed and 4 committed, but thinking we’re going to get 25 total in this class is WAY off.

          • I think we could end up with a couple more today, giving us 9, but that’s still a big question mark, with Woodbey still unannounced. Sure hope we don’t lose him to OHIO ST or FSU.

        • Its 8 and 3 Hard- who are all locked in. .. Thats the 11 I was talking about. The notion that 25 is not possible is crazy. We have no idea how many are leaving.. Im figuring 58 (#) plus ths class … Bringing the total to around the 80 range in number.. Kirs have (3) days to sign plus signing day .. I think I know a little about how recruiting works .. Lol

          • We’re gonna have to sweat it out for more CBs, OLs, DLs, etc. Will be very intriguing. Could work out fantastic. Could work out mediocre.

Interesting how some big-time programs took such a wildly different approach and will basically be working on 2019 signees through Jan while USC remains stuck with only 1/2 a class, or less, for now. Patience rules the day for USC at this point.

          • Jack, there is a secret signee that hasn’t been announced yet, who is it? Will it make people feel better? There is much at play still I don’t understand and I’ve got to look to see how many more spots Bama and some of these other teams have. How many possible junior transfers or early entrants will we have? 5-6? 2-3?

    • I think Sam’s gone too. All signs point to that IMO. He’s ready and has almost two complete seasons leading one of the nation’s better outfits against some of the best comp in college football. He’s my favorite USC QB ever, so I hate to see him go. What an amazing big-play, clutch phenom he has been!

  3. If Liam Douglass is the best offensive Tackle Clay Helton can get, then USC is in big trouble…. Unbelievable!!!!!!

    • Give Liam a break until he gives cause to think otherwise.

Voorhees was similarly rated and Wheeler was rated much lower. Normally, I would say trust the coaches to find characteristics they want, but these coaches don’t seem to have earned our trust (Voorhees, admittedly, was recruited by these same coaches).

    • USC’s still got plenty of time to fill in gaps – which is what this new bifurcated recruiting platform is all about. It’s actually perfect for a school like USC.

And no, USC is not in a lot of trouble. We’re #8 in the country with a good shot at 3-4, just like last year.

We have some good young OLs on the team and two months to pick up 3 more, which shouldn’t be hard for a P12 championship team that is totally loaded at most the skill positions and has already signed some great LBs, with more likely.

        • Fred look at 2018 class, there’s not many OL in top 200.Only 4 were west coast. This year other than Sewell we would have to find that guy or two who are projects.Dedich is only 1 from west coast signed top 100.

        • Like who? Nothing leaning our way that are current rock stars outside of Penei. Wish there were.

Help us Obi Wan, you’re our only hope!

      • Fred’s just talking about OTs, which is and has been a USC weakness for awhile. Dedich is a pure OC – looks very good though.

        • The ruins entire oline class decommitted!! All but one..they say they wanted to keep at least three of them, left anyway.

          • If you take a close look at top 200- 2018, OL class only Sewell remains uncommitted
There were only 4 from west coast.
Dedich and Sewell only 2 in top 100 west coast
Realistically for OT or OG this year we have to find those diamonds we can develop. Of course Sewell is huge to sign.
as you mentioned we have some good young guys already on team. Curious what 2019 class holds, along with JUCO.
            .

          • There was much talk last year that this would be a down year for the oline in the West. That was the reason we took 5 last year, including blueshirt Jalen McKenzie (Reggie’s son). I’m wondering what has happened to Nathan Smith who was hurt last Dec…he was actually ahead of Chuma last winter until he got hurt.

          • Possibility of some flips? A good line coach can take the 3 star make him an all American. The JC ranks have O linemen available. Still some possibilities. Get a coach, now. The O line coach won’t make a difference in the Cotton Bowl anyway.

          • That just means they’ll be going after OLs we are gonna probably have to switch over to.

Our OL coach isn’t some magnet recruiter, that’s for sure. We need ’em bad and after all this time, we only signed 2 and have none others committed.

    • Don’t panic, big man. It’s early yet. Clay doesn’t have a history of chocking in the recruiting department.

    • Fred we have OTs. We need interior linemen. We need Sewell, Dedich. And I hope we get one more. We’ll get a stud 4-5 star OT next year.

  4. There is some outstanding talent who signed here today. Just wished it would have been in more numbers and that is why USC ranks where they are after the 1st day of the early signing period (#33). There are still approximately 50% of all the 4 & 5-star recruits who have not signed yet. Helton needs a good win against a noted coach, Urban Meyer and Ohio ST. That will impress those recruits still thinking USC football.

  5. Quote from Wolf off his live chat:

“Since there is a lull in #USC announcements, I will relay this story: A Mater Dei parent was overheard today saying a coach told them JT Daniels is skipping his senior season”

According to my sources, wolf was trolling the heads at the 5 guys and a guy made this comment to someone on his cell phone, while he was in the middle of taking a dump

    • Scottie Doo is always trolling the heads at the right time. He’s got an uncanny knack for getting the scoop in the most unlikely places. Great work Wolf!

  6. I think many of the remaining recruits are waiting for Darnold’s decision. If he comes back they all want a piece of the CFP and will jump aboard. If not, we are going to miss two or three studs, as they will go elsewhere.

    • Hybird DE/OLB? I would assume that the hyphenator is such. Listed as a DE by most, LB by us. 6’4″, 230, so smaller than Gustin, though.

And who could have a heart and drive for the game like Gustin?

      • Love Gustin. Only Cushing and Mathews, in recent memory had enough talent to play the elephant position. That’s a lot of years and two All-Pro players and Gustin. I wonder what the Trojans season would be if he didn’t get hurt? WSU, win. ND, not so much this year. The moment was too big for them, like the Alabama game was in Dallas.

  7. Holy COW, Ohio state signed 21 today! That’s all their commits except Woodbey.

    Bama signed 14
    Cal signed 18
OR signed 13 (but not Penei!)
    OK 17
    Clem 15
    ND 20
    ChipClowns 7

    • That’s balls deep! There’s a lot of talent still out there waiting to watch the bowls and underclassmen’s decisions before they commit.

      • Plus, how many want to commit during the US Army Game or even the Under Armour Game? That’s still a big thing for these kids.

  8. J.T. is coming y’all!! He is coming to the cotton bowl to kick some trOJan @rrrssss! While Daniels is trying to get to 2nd base underneath the high school bleachers.

  9. With Cam coming back and Porter likely coming back, I’m not so worried about getting a fifth LB, though Solomon would be VERY nice (and we can’t go without a Serra guy, can we?)

So, immediate-impact players from this class (so far) may be few…

Dedich and Nielon (Toa staying is a long shot) will battle for Falah’s spot (will Cole Smith transfer?)

Voorhees into Viane’s spot, Jackson in for Toa (Either he goes to NFL or moves to C).

    Bolden moves in for Hawkins

Tufele and Tui in at NT for Fatu while Jimmons, Dorton and Rector cover Green’s jumping into the NFL.

    and

a wide open call for replacing Uchenna (because listing Wole and Murphy as co-#2s was a joke, as far as actual replacements/playing time went this year)

Will Palaie or Scott battle Houston, Katoa and Jones or vie for Uchenna’s spot?

Stepp should get playing time as our only BIG back.

    • Getting him would be nice, but not all that important w the safety haul we had last year.
Woodbey is a luxury right now. If he wasn’t local we probably wouldn’t even be on him at this point.

  10. Great start to the class. Addressing the need at LB w the best class since mid 2000’s w more to come in Feb. personally not too sad we missed on the kid from Cinci given he seems to have a lot of other interests. Go get another OL or 2 a couple DL and a CB and we are on our way to stacking classes back to back to back.

  11. CRAP: I forgot about Jalen McKenzie’s blueshirt!

We have 9, not 8 on the 2018 books against 10 SRs, NFL EEs and transfers. The 2018 class will be small…

    • Its 15 Srs.. Plus, Im figuring 6 Jrs and Transfers.. I did chat with someone in the know.. We should be near 20 or above when 2-7 rolls around.. The 3 unsigned are done deals and with the 11 I mentioned is in that number count .. Jay Mac (BS) is 12 .. So chances of us hitting 20 or better is not far off.. I have followed USC football 4 decades, alum and tied to the program..

      • Well, you are mistaken.

There are only 10 SRs ON SCHOLARSHIP from 3 different classes, 2013, 2014 and 2016 (Fatu was a JC):

Go to the USC official web site and count for yourself. Click on the word “YEAR” and the roster will sort to make counting easier. There are 14 SRs total, 4 of whom do not hold scholarships:

        ON SCHOLARSHIP
        Jonathan Lockett
        Olajuwon Tucker
        Uchenna Nwosu
        Josh Fatu
        Viane Talamaivao
        Matt Lopes RS (former walk-on)
        Chris Hawkins RS
        Nico Falah RS
James Toland IV RS (former walk-on)
        Steven Mitchell RS

        WALK ONS
        Yoofi Quansah
        Christian Herrera
        Jackson Boyer
        Milo Stewart

If you have other names, please let me know.

      • usc.rivals DOT com/news/scholarship-distribution-chart-10

Shows current numbers for 2018. According to them, we have 84 scholarships counting the 9 I mention (8 LOIs and McKenzie) and all SRs removed (no underclassmen listed as “declared for NFL,” though I saw a tweet today wishing “good bye” to Edoga).

    • St. John Bosco hasn’t been too good to us. What kind of Catholic school sends their kids to place that hate Catholic values?

  12. Don’t be down chums, this new format seems to have taken our coaches and program off balance. Even if we can’t recover this year, the PAC 12 is absolutely horrible in recruiting.

UW did a surprisingly good job, and WSU did okay, but in terms of national classes they didn’t do so good either. We have more talent coming back.

It’s been a rough day, uncharacteristic of SC but again, it’s adjusting. Some folks on our staff just got a reality check about a new era. Even SC can’t just recruit itself anymore.

  13. I am very disappointed in our start to the early signing period. Georgia received signed letters from six 5 star players on 247’s composite rankings, and a total of eight of the top 38 in said rankings. This is Georgia, not OSU or Alabama.. All of the name programs signed more players than USC. I know we usually close very strong during the February signing period, but something seems off this year. I hope my gut feeling is wrong.

    • Something is wrong. I think it is the view of still some instability at USC. Swann has backed Helton very well publicly but some doubts still linger. USC is not recruiting on its own this year.

  14. Since we could only sign one more player until those leaving early for the NFL are announced, maybe this isn’t so bad after all. I just want to see more beef for our O-line.

  15. Got a text right now.
But Jackson Carman’s HS Coach has confirmed everything we’ve been saying. Basically said USC was his third school and lucky to even have came this far. He gave a lot of respect to Helton and Deland McCullough because he’s (McCullough).

Neil Callaway not being his recruiter wasn’t a good sign, making it sound like BKU, McCullough, Nansen are picking up the slack for guys like Callaway, Pendergast, and Bradford..

“USC is not on the same level as Clemson and Ohio State”

That is the pretty much gist of it coming from Jackson Carman following his official visit.

☠☠☠THE FLYER’S ARE OUT ON USC’S COACHING STAFF

      • There is also rumblings that the CB from up north that Bradford signed is not playing or showing much and it’s getting to be where Bradford gets the blame finally. He didn’t even show up to visit Griffin who we are “trying” to flip from uclame.
