Does USC Have Surprise Pro Prospect?

I’ve heard there could be a surprise USC player who might turn pro. Two possible candidates are defensive end Porter Gustin and cornerback Iman Marshall. Gustin said he would “most likely” return next season when asked after the Cotton Bowl.

That was an odd answer considering he did not play much this season. The theory on Marshall is he projects as a safety in the NFL and doesn’t want another year at cornerback. I would not rule offensive tackle Chuma Edoga either, even though he said Friday he was coming back. He can be fickle and you never know what he might want to do by Jan. 15.

Marshall should ask the coaches to play safety for next year. He is a below average corner anyway. A year at safety at SC before going pro will help him more than just going pro when the only tape he has is him getting torched time and time again or committing pass interference..

    • GOMER HELTON

He should have been at safety all along, thanks Bradford !!!!!

      • tim chaney

        been saying that…

    • steveg

Seems we have some pretty good talent at safety now, perhaps that is why Marshall is at cb.

      • Jack B

Grabby’s not good enough to start at S for USC. So he starts at CB, where he prefers and where USC has under-recruited.

        • Brent4c

He wants to play CB because w his size he could project as an elite guy there. He won’t because he is a poor tackler and has poor ball skills. At safety he’s just another guy. Kind of like an OL guard wanting to play tackle. The money is at tackle not guard in the NFL.

  • Paul Muad’dib

Marshall needs to leave. He will just regress as a corner back. Edoga might as well leave to and get the money while he can. He will not last in the pros.

    • GOMER HELTON

Marshall has been poorly coached and he’s not a corner, and he’s not going to be an NFL player either.

      • Paul Muad’dib

He’ll make a special teams/back up safety spot somewhere. He hits hard lol

        • GOMER HELTON

          The CFL ?

          • Paul Muad’dib

The Calgary Stampeders are a great club to play for…

          • rusoviet

Good fit for Gustin what with the busted toe and all….

    • LamontRaymond

He was pretty unequivocal on the Adam Maya podcast (Rivals) that he’s staying at SC for 4 years. Of course, he may have changed his mind.

      • Jack B

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of players left who shouldn’t. Helton runs a pretty loose ship and I doubt the players see any clear path to a huge 2018 season. If Darnold lets it be known he is sticking, that could affect a lot. But if Darnold heads out, I predict a few more open spots for SC recruiting-wise.

    • Pasadena Trojan

He is too big to play corner. he needs to move to lber or safety.

      • Rock2112

If I recall correctly, Chris Hawkins played as a corner early and then moved to safety with good results. Iman needs to do the same, and I don’t know what the hell we can do with Jones except place him number 2 behind Langley permanently.

  • GOMER HELTON

We know it’s not anyone on the coaching staff !!!!!!!!!

  • LamontRaymond

Time for Chuma to head to the NFL.. would like a fresh start at the RT spot.

    • schammer47

Edoga never lived up to the potential he was thought to have. Never !

    • gotroy22

      Will Chumbawamba be tubthumping?

  • Fred Sampson

None of those players raised any brows, I hope they don’t get lost in the, free agent shuffle

    • rusoviet

Way to get some press coverage for 15 seconds esp. for Gustin

  • Ted

According to sources, Biggie was seen with Lil Romeo at the ICDC College talking about “getting out of the low class southern cal and enrolling at ICDC to seek a certificate in dental assisting!” Sam Darnold is said to be interested as well!

    • steveg

I hear they have a pretty good team too. Now go back to your nap Ted.

    • USCDAN1986

11-3 vs 6-7.. Ruin your life!

That is so 90’s, fits for you Ted.

    • hoohoolianFUCLA

According to sources,Ted enjoys Cocker Spaniels covered in Vaseline.

  • Jack B

Grabby insists on playing CB. That’s his problem – not USC’s. But the players seem to dictate too much of what goes on at SC, so I’m not surprised.

You think a player at ALA dictates to Saban in any way, shape or form? Helton needs to get much tougher or 2018 is gonna be his official “Swann” song, pun intended.

  • steveg

This is almost like “inside usc”. Good scoop Wolf.

  • Jack B

Gustin was mishandled by the USC medical staff and he undoubtedly knows this. If he gets a high enough grade by NFL people and proves he’s healthy, why not go? Plenty of reasons, #1 being he’s not that good.

He’s just not a great NFL prospect. Good rusher, but not excellent in space or against the run. I’d say he’s a 4-5 round pick at best, assuming his toe is good. One-dimensional guy.

Hope he stays though. Great work ethic and would be a positive, emotional leader for 2018.

    • Old Trojans never die

Love to answer but some jackenape flagged a post so I’m in post purgatory. Check back in an hour to see and if being moderated again I will be gone because this is the second time the trolls have bumped me. I don’t play gamed this way, I get my kids to play.

    • steveg

Perhaps if he stays another season he may get better and improve his position, who knows.

      • Jack B

That’s the classic, ultimate issue for Grabby. Can he learn to cover better when he simply lacks some some of the traits that are needed? He’s NEVER been good at covering WRs at USC despite all the prep hype. So people blame his coaches. I blame Grabby. He doesn’t have the hips or flexibility for it. Dude should put on 20 pounds and play OLB.

Some people seem to think every single athlete can become a good cover person if they want. Well, that’s just not true. Some dudes can flat out cover people like a cheap suit because of innate skills they have. Others could have Deion Sanders teaching them every day, giving them every edge, and it wouldn’t matter.

If Grabby can’t cover in college, how’s he gonna cover in the NFL where every receiver can twist you like a pretzel, outrun, outcatch, outpattern and outhustle you?

Grabby’s an NFL practice team-type, maybe. He’s not even a 3rd year all-conference player, but he probably thinks he’s ready for the NFL because he’s always seen himself that way even though he’s never played like it.

        • steveg

I agree 100% about Grabby. I was refering to your post about Gustin.

    • Trojans 6942

Definitely should stay he could easily improve to 3 -2 rounder by coming back. Needs to prove he can stay healthy for one.

    • Arturo

Gustin is who he is, Jack. I’m glad someone sees him for who he is. At best, he’s a third down specialist who plays special teams. Maybe he can get better against the run cause I saw him completely lost on a lot of run plays toward him. Showed some good pass rush skills against Texas though.

I think USC corners are overly criticized. SC plays man to man almost exclusively and that is tough to do. Most other teams use more zone coverage and therefore do not expose their CB like SC does. I think you are on to something when you say that he should switch positions. I think he can be a safety who covers tight ends or something. He isn’t a afraid of contact so that will help him at the pro level.

  • Sas

I heard it was Marshall. I think I could set up a blog by assuming too or hearsay. I just need the followers. Sco**, can I count on you?

    • steveg

Hey Sam I know you would get a following. Could get some advertising and make a bundle doing what you like the most, sports.

      • Sas

        They’d say….who are you again?

      • Sas

In all seriousness my friend (more like a brother) has been feeding me a lot since the last part july. Hes always on SC like us but I can’t remember a lot of his stuff because I’m always reading and chatting with u guys LOL.

    • gotroy22

      Open your own blog, sas!

      • Sas

It is more of a group text with you and a few
No, but I would not let the blogger wear a better wardrobe than me on camera not if Lindsay Soto was around us.

No soccer jerseys with soft serve ice cream stains?

There is obviously a big demand, go for it!

          • Sas

I’ll be black listed at Howard Jones for stepping on toes in a month

          • gotroy22

You need some of the other posters that go to the practices to feed you info.

          • Sas

I’m doing fine here with people giving me a compliment here or there. Mr. W**f has to read the comments.

          • gotroy22

I meant so you wouldn’t get targeted by the admin.

  • Brent4c

“I’ve heard” from who exactly? We can all put rumors out there about anything, but we aren’t journalists w 0 inside sources.

  • steveg

It couldn’t be Jones could it? We aren’t that lucky. His replacement Langley did a decent job at db. The sent in Jones for a couple of plays just so he could get his PI then disappeared back to the pine. Perhaps the staff is fed up with him finally.

    • Arturo

He was hurt and tried to go. I am the only person here who likes Jack Jack.

      • OCTrojan

Jones was our best DB by far!
Iman needs to work on his footwork and understanding down and distance (like good DBs) so he can anticipate better and get some picks or deflect some passes. He rarely ever saw the ball coming towards the WR he covered (hence the grabbing/PI penalties).

  • UtahTrojan

Wouldn’t it have been easier for the blogger to say he didn’t have a clue? We all know that is the truth anyway.

  • dirtmover

I’d pay for Iman to be gone … he’s horrible …

  • steveg

Perhaps it is Tee Helton going to the Browns as OC. Sams worst nightmare.
