Back To Basketball

I spoke to a Pac-12 basketball assistant coach today about USC: “They don’t play very hard and take some bad shots. But they can also beat every team by 20 points if they play at their best.”

  • GOMER HELTON

    Sounds like the football team

    • Michael Guarino

Yeah —there’s something to be said for that kind of range.

  • steveg

Is Andy the coach everyone thought he was going to be? Or is it the kids these days.

    • Ray

      Good question.

  • Jack B

    Darnold declares for NFL officially.

    • RegalTrojan

Really? Is it a done deal now?

      • Jack B

Done, baby, done. Rosen declared a little earlier, too. so no surprise there either.

        You knew it was coming.

        • RegalTrojan

Yep. No surprise there, JB. As a matter of fact, I would’ve been shocked if he wasn’t leaving.

      • LamontRaymond

Yep, the tweets are out there. Sports Illustrated, etc. Hopefully the next QB will take care of the ball better. That’s the starting point.

        • RegalTrojan

Yeah, but we’ll miss many of his other stellar qualities. Just wait and see.

          • LamontRaymond

No doubt. Great kid, great arm. Just a bummer to be constantly shooting ourselves in the foot.

          • JBKayak

Confidence. Gotta believe in the game plan the coach’s cooked up and then execute.

        • Jack B

He was my favorite Trojan QB ever, regardless of the turnovers this season. If Darnold had Baker Mayfield’s OL, only God knows how much yardage Darnold would have thrown and run for.

    • USCDAN1986

Good for Sam, he still needs work. But like rehabing a old house..Sam has the bones to be an elite NFL QB.. Wishing him well.. Look forward to the next great USC QB, Fink, Sears or Daniels.

      • RegalTrojan

Yeah, I think it’s a good decision for himself. I don’t think the situation would be necessarily better next year for him. When you’re projected to be a first rounder, you go.

        • Jack B

Not just a first rounder. Possibly #1. Easy decision.

          • RegalTrojan

            Very easy!

        • USCDAN1986

Great decision.. Next year I’d say will not be good for Helton and staff.. The team took major steps backwards

        • Michael Guarino

I think that was Sam’s mindset all season, RT!
He didn’t have the same intensity and —-it’s okay for anyone and everyone to disagree —it looked to me like he played a couple of games this year as though he were almost going through the motions. Playing with all his ability but not with his all of his heart (as he did last year).

          • JBKayak

No clear Offensive plan for him to follow. F’ing chaos and he played like it

          • Michael Guarino

On point, JBKayak! Sometimes Sam had this “let’s just get this season over with!” look on his face as he trotted off the field after another three & out…..

      • Paul Muad’dib

According to Wolf’s stances on Darnold, the Browns should be winning the super bowl next year and not because of their coach.

      • LamontRaymond

My prediction – Sears (at least at first) and then Daniels.

        • USCDAN1986

Unless Helton pulls the loyalty card and goes with Fink.. He’s done either way.. Swann is smiling Im sure.

          • Michael Guarino

Agreed, USCDAN1986 (but it would be neat —just to stop the bleeding a little bit in 2018—-if Swan did something beside smile).

          • USCDAN1986

I still think based on intel.. Helton’s days are numbered.

          • Michael Guarino

As in less than 90 days? Once we start spring with the present staff, 2018 has trouble written all over it (Stanford & Texas away —and Chip Kelly salivating to match offenses against a redshirt freshman quarterback).

          • USCDAN1986

I agree.. Helton just needs to go!

          • Lunderful

Done any day now or mid-season?

          • USCDAN1986

            Soon!

        • Gabby

          Fink would transfer out

      • schammer47

        Same here, USCDAN1986.

    • Fred Sampson

      Fantastic, good for him

      • LamontRaymond

        Agreed!

    • Linkster

Been out for an hour and no post from the blogger. Also, Rosen announced. Good luck Sam, thanks for putting up with a horrible OL for the past season.

      • gotroy22

You mean Rosen, the least surprising announcement ever?

    • Trojans 6942

      Good guy, good for him.

    • usc fan

Guess I was wrong again. I onky said this like a week ago. His mom let it out. Lol. Then got quite to let sam do it his way. It means one thing Martin is back and Helton is back. Not good at all.

      • RegalTrojan

You thought he was staying? And Helton leaving? LOL!

        • Michael Guarino

I’m with usc fan, RT! I was hoping that Swann was going to make a deal with Sam that, if he stayed, as a reward he could call Helton into his dorm room and fire him.

          • RegalTrojan

            LMAO…good one, MG!

          • Michael Guarino

It’s a fun image, RT! Just wish it got played out for real (and put on YouTube)!

          • RegalTrojan

It would’ve definitely been the most viral video of the year, MG!

          • Michael Guarino

In that golden 70 million range…..

        • usc fan

Nope I posted it a week ago he mom posted it on her page then removed it a day later. I also spoke with a friend of family who said he was leaving if tee Martin was staying. Now we know tee is staying

          • JBKayak

I think that is right on the $$, Darnold doesn’t believe in Tee after this year’s play calling

          • Michael Guarino

Well, that was a real win/win for USC wasn’t it? I wonder how many other good things are gonna happen before next September?

          • Jack B

Darnold’s decision had nothing to do with Tee whatsoever Troll boy.

We’ve all known Darnold was leaving for a long time, at least anyone who was paying any attention and wasn’t trying to talk themselves out of it.

      • schammer47

Coach Tee Martin must be permanently from his OC assignment.

        • USCDAN1986

          Removed ?

          • schammer47

            YES !!!

    • Michael Guarino

If Helton doesn’t get himself the best damn quarterback & o-line coaches money can buy, September isn’t gonna be pretty, Jack.

      • schammer47

For 2018, Helton has two excellent QB’s, will have a very much improved OL, and will field the best defense in the PAC12. This War Machine will be ready and able to run the table. Two things: do not want another season fraught with a massive number of injuries AND hire a new Offensive Coordinator with his own plan, not something borrowed from Kiffin or senor Sark !!

        • RegalTrojan

          Very predictable there. lol.

        • AtlDDS

much improved OL? on what basis other than being one year older? they sure didn’t learn or develop any skills from Calloway and Company in 2017!

          • RegalTrojan

            Not much from Helton, either.

        • Michael Guarino

schammer47 —are you building into your prediction new o-line and DB coaches? If you are, you may have something…..

          • RegalTrojan

This scammer called me “UnregalTrojan” earlier today, bro.

          • Michael Guarino

No way! NO ONE does that, Bro!
            (Didn’t see it, sorry)!

          • RegalTrojan

            Well? The scammer did. LOL!

          • gotroy22

At least he didn’t call you The Regal Beagle….

          • RegalTrojan

LOL…Remember that one, GT! Excellent memory! Wow!!!

          • gotroy22

Jack, Janet and Chrissy’s hang out!

          • RegalTrojan

What a freaking masquerade in here!

        • Pasadena Trojan

I will wait to see what Helton does with the o line coach, db coach, and the o coordinator before I agree to what you had written.

      • gotroy22

Matt Fink is King of the LA River!

        • Michael Guarino

I know you think that, gt —-but (and I hope I’m wrong) I don’t think he has the goods in the passing department. And if he doesn’t, we better pray Sears is the real deal (he sure as hell didn’t look it at practice).

        • Gabby

          EACTLY!

    • Sas

SS “JT Daniels is the best QB he’s seen in HS”

That’s a big label for a QB. We’ll find out.

  • Pete

It’s Adios Sam. Good luck in the NFL. USC 247 Sports. Where the real USC news is reported.

    • Jack B

I got mine on the Bleacher Report. SW’s always the slowest on this stuff. He’ll come up with some inane comment, like he’s some authority on what every kid should do.

      • Pete

        That’s because he’s at Hooters.

        • USCDAN1986

          Lol

        • JBKayak

Sneaking his Five Guys in to look at the Hooters

        • Gabby

He loves to troll the heads at the 5 guys……where he finds his “inside info”

  • Paul Muad’dib

I spoke to a Inside USC assistant editor today about Wolfie: “He doesn’t write very well and takes some bad stances on issues. But he also posts late on major SC issues by about 20 hours at his best.”

    • rusoviet

Yeah well who else are you referring to who posts anything anyone here reads or listens to?

  • LamontRaymond

You need someone else to tell you that?

  • Jonny D

Does anyone believe any head coach or assistant would speak to Wolf? I think he makes this crap up.

  • Linkster

So with Darnold gone is JTD coming for sure?

    • usc fan

      Jt is a lock.

      • Michael Guarino

        Whew!

    • USCDAN1986

      He’s in!

  • JBKayak

Earth to Scottie, Earth to Scottie…the biggest news of the off season just hit. Time to get back inside of USC buddy

  • Linkster

Who goes first? Darnold or Rosen? My $ is on Sam.

    • USCDAN1986

      Sam.. Rosen is soft ..

      • JBKayak

        The word is out

  • JBKayak

I think we just got the best look at InsideUSC with Darnold leaving. To me, it speaks volumes about this coaching staff.
Darnold is a SC die-hard, commiting when there were big time recruits ahead of him. He comes from OC and can get insurance to play for another year if he was having fun and wanted to play. Maybe USC was his stepping stone to his ultimate goal of playing on Sundays but he is a different character than most, and his leaving is most telling

    • LamontRaymond

I’m guessing he saw what happened to Barkley & Leinart’s draft stock after coming back for the additional year. Smart move by Sam. I’m sure the greatness of the team, the coaching staff, and the Trojans community made the decision extremely tough.

      • Michael Guarino

It was SO tough to leave this coaching staff that Sam waited all the way until January 3rd (i.e., the Wednesday after the Cotton Bowl) to announce.

        • schammer47

Sam Darnold would only be in the way, Michael. No loss here.

          • Michael Guarino

Ha! Dean Martin was so much funnier after Jerry Lewis left the act…..

  • JBKayak

Sam leaving already tells me what kind of coach Helton and Martin are.

    • Fred Sampson

      Ha !

    • USCDAN1986

Get out while he has this opportunity. Next year may be a cluster!

    • RegalTrojan

      Was thinking the same.

    • gotroy22

He just failed in bring in his most important recruit.

  • LamontRaymond

If they win consistently next year, do you give full credit to Clay? Or do you say they’re winning despite him? Put another way, do you give him the opportunity to succeed?

    • Michael Guarino

If big changes aren’t immediately made in Helton’s staff —-starting with Offensive Coordinator —- we won’t have to worry our pretty little heads with “what if?” questions, Lamont.

      • USCDAN1986

Swann is smiling, his decision just became easier for him to get his own guy..

        • RegalTrojan

          Yes.

    • Fred Sampson

You have to give him a chance, because he earned it, but from what I’ve seen of Clay Helton so far, USC is doomed

      • Michael Guarino

        Fair minded and smart observation….
        #UnlessThereAreMassiveStaffChanges

    • gotroy22

Define consistently. You mean squeaking out wins over inferior opponents and losing to one like this year?

  • Sas

I met a very positive person today who said Sc*tt Wo*f is not a good writerbloggerguy question mark?

    What is he ?
