USC Basketball Problems Are Not Solely Because Of FBI Or NCAA

If you are a USC basketball fan, you can blame the Trojans’ inconsistency on the absence of De’Anthony Melton; the FBI/NCAA investigation; the fact players are not playing hard; not playing defense; are looking toward the NBA Draft.

There are a lot of excuses. Key word being “excuses.” But USC blew a 15-point lead to Stanford last night. Last year, when the Melton/investigation excuses did not exist, USC was outscored 12-1 at the end of both Arizona State games.

It’s just a byproduct of Andy Enfield’s offense that his teams are unable to be patient and protect leads. So let’s not blame everything on the FBI or NCAA.

  1. Sorry, Scott —but I blame the FBI and the NCAA for what happened last night. They had their fingerprints all over that final 5 minutes.

  2. Yep, this is the problem. Enfield’s offense requires consistent shooting, and you are not going to get that kind of shooting the college.

But he does recruit solid players, so when the school decides to move on, the new coach will not have to start from scratch, just like Bibby had to, and like Floyd had to, and like McNeil and to, and like Enfield had to.

    • Bland was a big-time recruiter at SDSU, and then at SC. I think recruiting will dip with him gone. That will leave Enfield and all his deficiencies with less talent.

  3. Enfield had one season where he did anything and the drunken lazy AD hired him without doing any kind of real search, thanks Pat, you screwed SC over big time with your lazy hires.
    hiccccuuuup, beeeeeeeeeelch, buuuuuuuuuurp.

  4. I don’t follow USC basketball because college hoops is unwatchable and extremely boring with players only staying for one year. It makes it so only a few programs can dominate by getting all the top one-and-dones.

I am curious if Scott Wolf has ever supported any coach of a USC sports team, seeing as how only negativity comes in his posts. Anyone know if Scott ever said anything positive about a USC program?

  5. Enfield has had what 4-5 years to do something. Looking like he has peaked at SC. If he doesn’t get to the top 4-5 in conference and fails to make the NCAA, he should be done. Not having one guy, Melton, doesn’t explain the poor play.

  6. I haven’t coached basketball since my son was in 6th grade and I can see the issues clearly. No defense (or team defense at least), lack of hustle, bad shot selection. It’s shouldn’t be hard to understand that to protect a lead, a team needs to NOT SHOOT until they get in a high percentage situation or can draw a foul. To do this you need some form of offensive “set”. And a 50 footer is not a “miracle” if you think you already won and don’t make sure one doesn’t get put up clean? We may not make the tournament at this rate……ALL OF THIS IS ON THE COACHING STAFF, nothing to do with Melton. As of now we look like we SUCK and it looks like the talent is there. When I coached we always started the first day of the season with “if we do nothing, we will play defense.”
