Deland McCullough To KC

Deland McCullough has accepted a job with the Kansas City Chiefs. Besides being perhaps the top assistant, here is another issue: he was one of only four assistants who actually recruit. This is a big hire for Clay Helton.

i spend all my time on this web log obsesing abuot teen ager athleats and geting angry at stranger poeples, my life is going good,

    • GOMER HELTON

Don’t forget your imaginary friends !

      • Gabby

Is that what inspires you to troll this blog 24/7?

    • Arturo

      Mi too.

  • GOMER HELTON

Gomer is in HUGE trouble, pretty soon he’ll be the only coach recruiting.

    • Gabby

Get the resume ready. USC is in big trouble and could use your expertise

      • Carra Strand

Resume not required. Just play yes man to coachy and your his guy.

    • RegalTrojan

What do you mean, the only?!! He’s got THE STUD recruiter, a.k.a., the OC on his side.

      • GOMER HELTON

        For how long ?

        • RegalTrojan

Not to worry. There always will be someone in-house to promote. lol.

  • Fred Sampson

Clay Helton will probably shop the JC ranks for a replacement, because like I said before, no credible assistants will join a sinking ship, unless Lynn Swann guarantees them a multiple deal

    • Burak Uslu

We are not a sinking ship, at least yet. We are still the defending PAC 12 Champion and the powerhouse of the west. This may change but I don’t think it will be that bad. We will still struggle against ND and Stanford will still be an issue. But we should be good against the rest.

      • Gabby

I’m more worried about Texas. Playing ND at home and later in the season is a plus

        • Burak Uslu

Remember two years ago Adoree saved us at home. There is something with Helton’s team that they always struggle against that controls the line of scrimmage

          • Carra Strand

yes, they struggle because they are not coached properly and they do not practice properly. Look at Boise State, walk ons, 1 and 2 star athletes ALWAYS in the top 25 and generally win their bowls. Why! Great coaching, plays, game plans, training, practice. SC is a country club under helton

      • Fred Sampson

I guarantee Texas will demolish USC, because Tom Herman as direction, talent, and a proven resume

        • Gabby

          The defense keeps it close

          • Trojan96

I hope so. Helton better update his staff within the next couple of months or his days are numbered.

          • Carra Strand

Please, let your words become a reality. A USC TEAM without Helton is a dream. He’s the last of the Haden flubs.

        • Burak Uslu

Texas game will be tough as well. A mediocre rebuilding Texas gave us a fit with Darnold. I don’t want to think about it next year. Good point.

        • RegalTrojan

Really? If we lose only to Texas, we’ll be in the PO and even win a nattie next season!

        • Carra Strand

yes, all the elements of a quality coach who can lead, teach and hire properly. We need a Tom Herman. Our head coach is an example of “The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by educator Laurence J. Peter and published in 1969. It states that the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate’s performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and “managers rise to the level of their incompetence”.

      • Trojan96

Texas at Austin will be a problem. We’ll have a better chance with ND since it will be at the coliseum.

        • RegalTrojan

Tell that to these Helton Lovers. They believe Helton will never lose any game until he does. But wait, even then they’ll tell you it’s all players’ and assistants’ fault.

          • Carra Strand

I hope you are right, but I am not as chimerical. Helton is teaching weakness and poor practice habits. If you don’t practice like you play, you will always get beaten by the team that did. Witness Ohio State. They were ready for SC. SC was on vacation.
Helton, at his age, is not going to suddenly develop Saban habits. He is molded.
He does not have the killer instinct to beat your competition, to keep your foot on the accelerator, to plan, practice and equip to win.
OHIO LOSS WAS AN EMBARRASSMENT. I don’t think that it is the exception for the future.

          • usc fan

patience helton is on his way out

          • Carra Strand

Thank you. Your words are comforting.

          • RegalTrojan

            Totally agreed. Word for word.

      • Carra Strand

Pac12 was weak this past year. Only pac 12 team that won a bowl was utah. To me, winning with little competition doesn’t show strength or talent. The Trojans will likely lose most games this year without Sam to do his saving magic. We would have been in competition with Oregon State if not for Darnold and helton wallows in his own sense of achievement. He is not a right for SC. He is great for a high school program because he likes to coddle the kids.

    • RegalTrojan

Will Helton use the lack of good players and coaches as an excuse if the team loses 5 or 6 times next season?

      • Carra Strand

        THIS DESCRIBES HELTON:

The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by educator Laurence J. Peter and published in 1969. It states that the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate’s performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and “managers rise to the level of their incompetence”.

        • RegalTrojan

To sum it all up, incompetence is the key word that describes our coaching, and there’s no other way to deny it.

    • Pac12 fan

Fred, we might need you to step in as coach. Based on many of your comments the Trojans could use you

      • RegalTrojan

        But not you?

      • Jack B

Since you’re the one who claims he was an L.A. Ram, you should be the one to apply. Come on. Show us your true worth, little gutty!

        • RegalTrojan

          LOL!

        • RegalTrojan

Guess the world must be getting crowded these days. We’ve got quite a few impersonators in this blog who claim they were some high-level football coaches or players, even in the NFL. I couldn’t quite make it to the NFL, and maybe that’s why some of these Helton-worshipping football geniuses like the Hat Boy would accuse me of not knowing anything about football. LOL!

          • Stuart Leventer

Football geniuses? For reals? I don’t think there’s any real football genius that would worship Helton after the dreaded CB game a few weeks ago.

      • Brent4c

Agree, let’s go Fred put your resume in

  • schammer47

Byron Ellis promoted. Deland McCullough gone. Tough break for the Trojans.

    • GOMER HELTON

Lost a pro coach, hired a GA, welcome to the wonderful world of Gomerville

WE HAVE TO START PROTESTING TO ADMINISTRATION

  • Old Trojans never die

Losing a coach that was actually doing his job is a huge blow. The shame is we should have been proactive in this arena. Our coaching staff is no better off than our O line in the Cotton Bowl. Not sure where to turn to avoid being sacked.

    • Stuart Leventer

Yes, he was probably the best coach in the whole team, and his departure is a big loss to the team. Is all the best in the team leaving a sign of them not seeing a bright future ahead in the near future?

  • carlos

Not good!!! He was a very good recruiter, and a great running back coach, I don’t see coach Helton being aggressive, and hiring top notch assistance Coaches, money is not a probably at SC !!!! He’s out of his league

    • Carra Strand

It seems HCCH is hanging on to his position by eliminating any competition. He is hiring DOWN now UP. Any great, successful executive always hires people smarter than he.
HCCH doesn’t want to be challenged because he’s insecure. He likes playing daddy to the boys.

  • GT

I have to tell you that I’m getting very tired of seeing team after team of the blue blood college teams hiring new top flight assistants day after day. What do we do, promote a basically graduate assistant from Western Kentucky mind you. While losing our best coach to the NFL. I hope something positive happens soon, because this is a sad state of affairs. What happened to the days when it was an honor and a privilege to coach at SC!

    • David Keeling

You should have already expected something like this. Max Nikias is putting most of the coaching staff budget in the reconstruction of the coliseum. The new toilet heads? Compliments of McCullough’s 2018 salary. Just don’t ask Max to give up his 2-cocktail lunches.

  • Don Dresden

unfortunately no one will want Helton so USC is stuck, I don’t believe Helton could keep a good coach, we may have a staff of GA’s from WKU by the time spring practice begins. Defense wins championships so hopefully a talented USC defense can save the season. Hopefully Helton is not the one choosing a replacement for Deland.

    • StokaNoka

      He also got Deland tho

      • Carra Strand

remember even a broken clock is right two times a day.

  • timmay

What gives me confidence is that we hired a GA, Ellis, who played quarterback at U Alabama Birmingham working with Neil Callaway, our crack current offensive line coach.

    • Carra Strand

The fans are making great points. However, they need to be made to administration. This last hire is another example of helton’s ineptitude which will greatly HARM THE PROGRAM.. He reached his celing and will not take USC TO THE BIG GAME. We won Pac12 only because pack 12 was so weak… see lack of bowl wins other than utah. While UCLA is strengthening its program, SC is undermining its with inferior staffing from the TOP. Thank Haden for another failure. He was too weak to fight the NCAA & he left us with helton

    Beginning of the end

    • Carra Strand

YOU ARE RIGHT, BUT I SUSPECT IT’S ACTUALLY A CONTINUATION OF THE DESTRUCTION OF USC’S FOOTBALL PROGRAM. HELTON IS MAKING ON STUPID MISTAKE AFTER ANOTHER. READ SCOTT WOLF AND DAN WEBER. THE FAILURE TO COACH AND HIRE IS HUGE.

WRITE TO SWANN AND NIKIAS. I LEFT THEIR CONTACT INFO BELOW.

THE FANS HAVE TO LET ADMINISTRATION KNOW THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND IT’S A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE.

  • dirtmover

With this loss, my prediction for 18 record falls at best to 7-5 perhaps even 6-6 .. oh well, may 19 be a better yr…

  • UCLA Dynasty

And your OL coach is still employed. Ha!

    • Carra Strand

Sadly, you are right! UCLA appears to be on a much better track than SC.

    • AtlDDS

      That does really su*k.

  • David Keeling

Me thinks Western Kentucky football staff is about to get raided again.

  • Trojans 6942

Assistant coaches come and go. Let’s see the hire first. Really 6-6 ( next year) because of a Rb. coach?

  • AtlDDS

As presently constituted and as the fortunes of the staff project into the future, Coach McCullough was too good to be on the Helton team of camp counselors. And he knew it and that’s probably why he jumped at the Chiefs’ offer.

  • usc fan

Wow just as I said the Helton era is coming to an end. Let’s see what swann does in the next couple of weeks. I will say this and this from what I already know. IF I WERE A 5 STAR RECRUIT I WOULD SIGN WITH USC. #1 REASON CLAY HELTON IS GONE AND I HAVE HEARD WHO ARE THE THREE POSSIBLE COACHES TO REPLACE HIM. TRUST ME NO ONE WILL TRANSFER AND THE 5 STARS WHO DID NOT COME TO USC WILL BE KICKING THEMSELVES. IE ALL THREE HAVE STAFFS READY TO GO!

  • Trojan95

Actually for this program to improve this is what we need to happen. This is sink or swim time for Clay and his decision making, whether that’s with staff or coaching. If he is successful (that includes big national games) then great. But, if he’s not successful his choices will do him in, he will be forced to own all the blame. We need one of those scenarios to happen quickly. I just want to win I could care less who the coach is.
