USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast having dinner with recruits at L.A. Live. Who says he doesn’t recruit?

    Clancy is a stud.

    • Sas

      Good one.

  • Sas

Did he have to get on a plane?

Did he meet the kids HS Coach/Both parents, or decision maker of the actual yes or no between mom and dad?

Probably not. The relationship from the beginning to middle to pen hitting the paper is what recruiting is not a quick pop in.

  • Jack B

Showing up at LA Live for dinner three weeks before the final LOI Day is barely “recruiting”. It’s more like driving the car out of the car wash just as it’s being dried.

    • steveg

Something is working for the recruitment of the defense. Have to say SC is loaded at DL and LB. Gotta get those two DB’s now.

  • Sas

    We’re on the same page!

  • timmay

Look up Pac-12 football careens toward crisis mode: It’s not the bowl record, it’s everything. by Jon Wilner. We could probably give better solutions here but the point is that everyone realizes exactly the same thing. Wolf should publish this sort of thing.

    • Pudly76

Nothing new in that article that hasn’t been laid out a hundred times before..trouble is the BOT and the presidents need to actually care about their athletic depts.

      • steveg

Something I have been ranting about for a while. Academics seem to think the classroom is the only thing important in college. It is starting to show glaringly in the pac12. It starts with Nikias, who controls the BOT instead of the other way around. Then it goes to the conference commissioner who is the worst in the nation as far as being forward thinking and strong in leadership.

        • Carra Strand

You are absolutely right. Larry Scott and Nikias are weak. I think Scott was hired to get television revenue, but he’s a failure when pac 12 has that fraud “pac 12 after dark” concept. Really!!! It’s the only time espn would air the conference……when the rest of the nation is sleeping. Pac 12 generally gets the WORST sports commentators, too. Brian Greise should be on a woman’s talk show instead of doing play by play for football.

          • Fred Sampson

Every SEC school received a check for $40 million dollars, because of the media package their commissioner put together

          • steveg

And it would have been more had he signed with direct tv. Any commissioner could have done that, but other commissioners stand up to the networks. Pac12 is the only major conf. with friday night games.

          • Fred Sampson

I don’t expect a PAC 12 School to make an appearance in the playoffs, anytime soon, I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see that type of play on the field

          • Gabby

Fred, it’s ok to fill your glass up

          • Pasadena Trojan

sEc plays Friday night but not the winning schools

          • Gabby

            Does money buy wins?

          • Carra Strand

And it’s that money and celebrity that brings in the BEST COACHES and the best recruits to keep their success continuing. This disparity in the Pac 12 falls at the feet of the University Presidents of the PAC 12. They like the money, but they appear to give athletics less attention. Larry Scott is a joke!

          • Fred Sampson

            Exactly

        • Pasadena Trojan

Don’t insult the over cooked noodle to the bozos you mentioned. The overlooked noodle is smarter

    • Fred Sampson

Yes, I looked it up and read the article in the Mercury News, and Jon Wilner said everything I’ve been saying over the last two years, the PAC 12 is a comical joke . The athletic directors for the conference continue to hire weak coaches, who coach the type of football, that fans don’t want to watch. Other then David Shaw, Chris Peterson, and Kyle Whittingham , the conference is full of second rate, Bozo coaches, who probably wouldn’t get hired at any other institution

      • Pudly76

Taggart was hired by FSU and Helfrich by The Chicago bears. Our last defensive coordinator was hired by Wisconsin for the same position before getting the Cal head coaching job..Sark coaching in Atlanta as the OC. Should I go on. Do you actually look at what’s going on before you post?

      • steveg

Fred, hot dang, we AGREE on something!!!

        • Pudly76

Why Whittingham? What’s he ever done?

          • steveg

Whitt gets a lot out of what he has. I would have liked having him at USC.

          • Pudly76

No disrespect to coach Whittingham, but even in the MWC he was a perennial 3rd place finisher.. except for a year or two..hardly a world beater. He is a good disciplinarian and a very good defensive coach, but hasn’t even been able to keep his own kids Home in Utah.

          • Pasadena Trojan

Agree about Whittingham. If he had usc talent he would be winning a lot bigger

          • gotroy22

He’s won the state of Utah.

          • Pudly76

That’s true, when he chose Utah over BYU, he flipped the script in the holy war..

          • gotroy22

So that is something! But he always seems to choke away chances to win the Pac 12 South.

          • Pudly76

Yup, even in the MWC he only won it once and was runner up once, the rest was 3rd or worse

      • Ignore_the_trolls

It’s cyclical. A few years ago people were saying the same things about the Big10. The problem starts at the top tho — fire him and things will turn around.

        • Fred Sampson

          Yep

        • timmay

It’s not cycle. You’re sticking your head in the sand a bit amigo. The Big 10 was and is #1 in revenue and fans. We were and are dead last and falling further.

No one questioned the health of the conference, the turnout, the money for coaches, quality of coaches, style of football, fan base, etc. of the Big 10. The fans were as rabid, turning out like ever.
Everyone acknowledged that the Big 10’s Delaney was one of the best commissioners with Swofford and Slive.

The Big 10 simply have to contend with a lack of speed with skill players in their backyard. They dipped more into the Florida, Texas as well as the upper South, California, Mid Atlantic as much as possible. They picked up two teams to access VA/MD/DC and NYC/NJ/CT for markets and talent and added Nebraska with its CA and TX recruiting and national following. They are still isolated in the upper Midwest Rust Belt but they are making more money and per team than anyone and are highly competitive on the field, and turnout, coaching, TV, bowl tie ins, awards, reputation.

The P12 on the other hand was the worst conference that got waaay worse. We were last in money and exposure now we are worse. We were last in football championships, now we’re way worse. We were last in coaching quality, now we’re way worse. We attempted an expansion bid into Texas where we were close to and wanted and fell on our face and picked up dead weight and less even less money. We’re dead last and falling.

          • Trojan96

Sooo True. Pac12 is going downhill fast.

          • Fred Sampson

Most of the PAC 12 coaches want Chip Kelly’s blueprint for success, as oppose to Nick Saban’s, because they can’t recruit big interior lineman. Clay Helton has the keys to USC’s football program, and he should be able to go get any lineman he wants, because of the schools reputation, but he wants to take the easy way out.

          • timmay

I get why some of the teams use the Chip (or Rich Rod) blueprint too; the triple option, zone read offense with the bubble screens WR blocking, no huddle, etc. is at the very least a good way to get some wins to build a program though you gotta be able to throw some play action in, and find a defense that can complement it (and deal with the same shortage of DL size).

Obviously biggest and most athletic and skilled OLs, TEs/FBs and at least one RB of that type are the basic foundation of power football that SC and the big boy programs have the luxury/imperative to play (because it is simply more successful if you can get the personnel).

USC not only could compete in power football, we had better skill athletes, and we had the polished QBs to pick up from Steve Clarkson who had the prep to run the West Coast passing game with all the drop back footwork on plays under center. I’d say that really, the PAC 12 can support several teams like playing big boy football if the money for the coaches and exposure (TV, new bowls, better game day, more PR) for the athletes to come was there. But both Larry Scott and Pat Haden/Nikias screwed the pooch.

It used to be that program programs a cut below SC like the rest of the P12 could build those guys carefully from raw talent and by the third or 4th or RS 5th year could field kids who might have picked up a lot of size and skill and experience, so it was a cycle for them.

Now most of the P12 are just giving in to playing soft football, far softer than Chip’s offense- the spread Run and Shoot basically, 3 WR, 1 back, shotgun and a pocket QB. The understanding is that the conference is trash and that you coach to be the best among the worse, not to compete nationally.

          • Fred Sampson

            Exactly…. On point

      • GOMER HELTON

Fred, look at the bio’s of the conference presidents, I think ONE of them had a job outside academia. Look at what they studied in college, most are concerned about gender bender issues, I doubt any of them played sports of any kind in their lives.

        • Fred Sampson

          Exactly

          • Gabby

            Fred, you’re smarter than that

            (Maybe not)

          • Pasadena Trojan

Football games are won on the practice field. You play the way you practice.

        • Gabby

More lame, irrelevant thoughts….football games are won on the fields.

        • Michael Guarino

I think we pretty much agree that the name Clay Helton and the words “genius innovator” will never be used in the same sentence. He’s a nice man who is working very hard to keep his head above water. But the “God stuff” isn’t one of his many problems. The guy who just cleaned Helton’s clock [and who has cleaned many other coaches’ clocks] has talked many times about making faith “user friendly” on his team. That guy’s name is Urban Meyer.

          • GOMER HELTON

I don’t care if he talks about God, but Californian’s seem to get apoplectic about the mere mention of the word, same for the eggheads who run the schools, God and gender confused people don’t mix in their mind.

          • Gabby

Coming from a guy with limited brain cells

        • Pasadena Trojan

With respect to you please refer to God as, God, not God stuff. Thank you

          • GOMER HELTON

            Get over yourself

    • Carra Strand

Thank you. I just read the article. I think much of it is accurate. Certainly, Pac 12 officiating is inept. The scheduling of Friday night games–brainless consideration of the impact on the student athletes. Where it failed is to put more pressure on the light weight pac 12 commissioner. He should return to women’s tennis. Just listen to him, then listen to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey. There is no comparison. Sankey is strong and interested in WINNING. Scott is interested in team parity!!!! So, he’s making all of them weak. How the university presidents and coaches could permit the media disrespect of the pac 12, the foolishness of its commission and the ineptitude of the officiating to continue makes me wonder if they are fit to represent their own universities.

    • Fred Sampson

This is the main reason why I thought it was hilarious, when the media said USC had the toughest schedule in college football two years ago, I never buy the garbage the media try’s to sell during the college football season

  • Pudly76

Well it seems to me that the organization of the defensive recruiting has been light years ahead of the other side of the ball, regardless of the criticism of Clancy’s recruiting. Through his tutelage, this looks like it’s become one of the better and more formidable defenses in the country..so what’s the problem if he doesn’t rack up the frequent flyer miles?

  • Ed Garrett

ugh! probaly ordered desert to and didnt shair ether, smdh!

    • Pudly76

Probably stuck them with the tab too, like you do with your imaginary friends..

  • Pudly76

Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo has been offered the Arizona coaching job, according to Michael Lev of the Arizona Star. Why does this bother me more than chocolate chip?

    • Sas

We could see a tough disciplined team. But wow, Arizona still has no coach this late.

      • Pudly76

Players and recruits already unhappy..evidently he said he wants to bring Navy offense to Pac12, and add a touch more passing..sounds like Georgia Tech West…tough to play, not really a threat.

        • Sas

I didn’t think he would still try and bring that option offense with him. I wouldn’t hire him. His mindset is what they need but his philosophy won’t last in AZ if he does that.

          • steveg

I was a huge fan of his because of his discipline. His offensive system is a bit old and not really that great for competing at the highest level. It works for Navy because it hides weakness which is inherent in their players. At Navy the mission is Naval not football.

          • Sas

            I agree

          • Pudly76

Khalil Tate was very upset, then had to remove twitter post…

          • Sas

They are losing players by the day.

          • Pudly76

            Yea, bad timing.

          • Sas

            Definitely

          • GOMER HELTON

Ken M would change his offense, he’s not Gomer

          • Pudly76

Did you read what he told the paper? Of course not. Easier to talk crud.

      • Fred Sampson

There in the process of hiring Navy’s coach

    • Sandy Underpants

Well Newymotololito’s offense would be compatible with RichRod’s offensive style, but did RichRod ever implement his offense while HC of Arizona? I can’t remember, I just know they were mostly terrible.

      • Pudly76

Not really, Tate was his first real dual threat and didn’t start the beginning of the year..injury I believe. So he was just starting to put in the West Virginia offense as he was abruptly discharged

        • Sandy Underpants

Yeah, it’s too bad they just gave him 6 years. Should’ve gone the full dozen so we could see what he could do. #metoosucks.

          • Pudly76

Did you read the charges against him..it wasn’t sexual harassment.

          • Sandy Underpants

I just found an article that his female assistant said he would make sure to walk around without his shirt after working out, because he’s irresistible of course, and she would see him looking at her thighs. Didn’t know girls noticed that. Guess we need to all chop our wieners off cuz I couldn’t live without looking at girls.

          • Pudly76

Yeah, more the coverup, and he yelled at her and his assistant coaches a lot, would call in the middle of the night to have them cover up for him.. this came on the heels of an assistant women’s track coach who was accused of harassment by a student athlete.

  • steveg

Keith Jackson passed away. Greatest college football announcer ever. We missed him when he retired, sad to see he is now gone. RIP.

    • Pudly76

Iconic voice from a simpler time..

      • Tebow_Obama

        So says the simpleton.

        • Pudly76

Aw poor hillbilly didn’t have his moonshine for breakfast yet..

          • Tebow_Obama

Quig having Gabby over on Friday nights and you won’t run out.

          • Pudly76

The one you silly little hillbilly, did you divorce that cousin of yours yet? Hahaha

          • Tebow_Obama

Did you think that one up all by yourself or did you have help? LOL!

          • Pudly76

Yo mama helped, you know, the one you call sis..

          • Tebow_Obama

            Learn how to spell, Bozo.

          • Pudly76

Hillbilly troll, drunk right off the bat…all mouth, no soul…

          • Tebow_Obama

That sounds like a personal problem, seek help.

          • Pudly76

You want an intervention, you’d need friends for that, hillbilly. Go fire up that still again, and stop drinking the profits..yo mama needs shoes again.

          • Tebow_Obama

“yo mama” doesn’t even wear shoes. LMFAO!

          • Pudly76

Aw, hillbilly projecting again..silly boy. By the way yo mama still dating your brother? Hmm..or was it your cuz again this week?

          • Gabby

Every time you open your mouth it reeks of p*nis. Tell your daddy(uncle) to put it away

            (P*nis breath)

          • Tebow_Obama

Of course your clients are going to tell you that, it’s what you do for a living.

            It ain’t rocket science.

          • Gabby

Perhaps some “rocket science” would help your football IQ……Just saying

          • Gabby

…….plus, the pinto wagon needs brakes and a tuneup

          • Tebow_Obama

So you had to walk home from the corner last night? Pudly ran out of gas. ROTFLMFAO!

          • Pudly76

You run out of brain cells…couldn’t think an original thought if you tried. Heard your sister started her dog breeding business again…

          • Gabby

            Ouch!……double crotch kick

          • Pudly76

And I thought it was a gremlin.

          • Gabby

Whatever it is, it’s a piece of s**t that belongs in the junkyard

          • Pudly76

            That isn’t a junkyard, it’s his home…

          • Gabby

That would explain the porcelain sh*ter planted right outside the front door

          • Tebow_Obama

Quit drinking all of Pudly’s moonshine, he gets really cranky in the morning.

          • Pudly76

Lost your creativity hillbilly? Stupid is as stupid does…you foolish hillbilly troll

          • Fred Sampson

            You should block them,

          • Tebow_Obama

You’re absolutely right, Fred. Thanks for the reminder, will do.

    • Michael Guarino

Thank you so much for posting this, steveg. No one called USC games with the same undisguised enthusiasm that Keith brought to the booth—-and he always insisted USC won that Texas NC game “cuz Vince Young’s knee was down!”

      • gotroy22

        He was a Coug alum.

        • Michael Guarino

Yep, gt —I guess somewhere along the line Keith sorta adopted us. I’ve never quite gotten used to anybody else calling our games.
          #TomKellyWasGreatToo

          • gotroy22

You could sense he really loved watching SC football.

          • Michael Guarino

Yeah, he even admitted that in an ESPN interview after he retired. I bet the Rose Bowl result made him happy (hope he didn’t see the Cotton Bowl)!

        • Pudly76

          Rasheem is going pro.

    • Paul Muad’dib

I think his “Whoa Nelly” was awesome. He always had lots of inside info about ALL Pac-10 teams and their players. Great pairing with Dan Fouts

  • Tebow_Obama

The University of Southern California Trojans football program is seen as a program filled with a bunch of drama queens who have no clue about the direction of the program.

Quite the embarrassment. Congratulations to Max Nikias, Lynn Swann and Clay Helton for making it so.

  • Golden Trojan

Who says he doesn’t recruit? Uh, Scott Wolf.

    • GOMER HELTON

Yeah, having dinner at an LA eatery isn’t exactly recruiting

      • Tebow_Obama

Maybe Clay Helton can hold an all you can eat recruit get together on Friday nights.

        • Pudly76

#2 rated class on a per avg basis on every recruiting service, stupid little hillbilly troll.

          • Gabby

Throwing numbers at the guy is a waste, he can’t comprehend

        • Gabby

          Tool_obama

      • Gabby

Must suck trolling dumpster alley looking for dinner

  • GOMER HELTON

Clancy ” Look, my defense is sooooo complicated that I don’t trust using underclassmen, you might not see the field for 2 years. ”
    Recruit ” WTF ? ”
Clancy ” Oh don’t worry about it, Gomer will give you a hug, talk to you about God and family, it’s all good. Say, how’s that free range, organic, non GMO, chicken ? “

    • Gabby

      Minimum wage is going up.

  • Pudly76

According to sources close to the school, th entire staff was in attendance.

  • Tebow_Obama

It’s Official…USC Trojan football with the Three Stooges running the show (Max Nikias, Lynn Swann and Clay Helton) has become a Gawd Damn Joke!

  • Chris

What’s with all of the jack del rio coming to be coach stuff? Who started that nonsense? I read a thread yesterday that made it seem like a done deal, yet nobody anywhere else said a word. ??

    • steveg

USCDAN1986 started it. Said he had some sources at Mckay Center and they confirmed unofficially that he was correct about JDR coming but it is still being worked out.

      • Pudly76

        Rasheem is gone

    • Sandy Underpants

It’s been going around since before Kiffin was hired. Don’t know why anyone thinks Del Rio should be SC head coach other than he’s a Trojan, because he’s been fired as an HC as many times as SC has had openings since the Kiffin hire.

  • Tebow_Obama

Jack Del Rio is crap just like Clay Helton.

    • Pudly76

Aw, somebody doesn’t like SC? Poor hillbilly troll…man enough to say it anonymously though…homophobic hillbilly troll, grow up.

  • Lunderful

    Any Jack Del Rio sightings?

  • Pasadena Trojan

Scooter, who is in this weekend for the recruiting trip? Scooter go do ur job. Who was Pendergast having dinner with? Scooter go do ur job

  • Sandy Underpants

Which place? Toms Urban? Katsuya? Yard House? My pick is Yardhouse, that’s where I’m gonna go to get blasted before the Killers concert Feb 1 and after if I’m still alive.

  • Sas

Sorry I just seen your reply. My bad, but yeah we both can shake are heads and try to find why Clancy is so highly regarded. He’s not really putting SC next to teams like Bama, LSU, Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin and FSU as a Championship Defense.
