Tee Martin Staying At USC But Will He Call All The Plays?

I heard when Tee Martin interviewed with LSU, he was getting a new contract to stay at USC. That was confirmed today by ProFootballTalk.com, which reported he would turn down the Raiders and stay at USC with a new contract.

Now the big question: Would Martin possibly stay if he does not call all the plays? He didn’t call at the plays at the Cotton Bowl. If he doesn’t next season, it’s on him now.

  1. Good for Tee – finally someone has a lever over Clay’s ‘good ole boy’ idiocy. It’s on him but hey better to go down swinging than be deemed ‘leaving’. Fight on – sooner Helton is gone the better.

    • Too bad ol Gomer didn’t think the same about McCullough. You just watch, some graduate assistant will be named RB coach or a lacky from WKU.

  2. Wolf and his fixation on who is calling plays. This is becoming a joke, it is obvious the blogger has no idea how play calling works. Martin would be way over his head with the Raiders.

    • So true. SW hasn’t a clue about play-calling. But he’s still obsessed with it, 24-7. It’s like these Kiffin/Sark/Haden haters. They think about it day and night, like they’ve been permanently scarred.

I don’t know why SW cares so much about how the USC play-calling works. It’s a Twilight Zone-type thing. If only Rod Serling were still alive.

  3. Well it should be sink or swim for Martin. However one theme is recurring that bugs me. Does anyone believe that communications on this staff are so poor that they don’t agree on play calls? Does anyone think if Martin saw a coach doing a poor job he wouldn’t step forward to correct the situation? I don’t think we win games on luck alone.

  4. I really don’t believe that our offense will be a world-beater even if Martin calls all plays next season. Let’s face it. He isn’t exactly a proven offensive mastermind, and the reasons for his demand must be his other abilities, such as recruiting, social and communication skills, and etc.. He’s actually a very fitting assistant to Helton — a very likable and friendly guy who’s not exactly brilliant in his trade — just like his boss.

    • Yes, indeed. We don’t have miracle workers on our team. That’s the unfortunate truth.

    • The times I have seen/heard Tee interviewed he came across as defensive, testy, aloof and arrogant. I’ve yet to witness the friendly and approachable side of the man. Then again, he was addressing the media, so their presence may have brought out the aforementioned negative characteristics. He may be a super cool dude with players and staff.

  5. Calif CB Olaijah Griffin (4*, 6-0, 170, #4 CB in country) from Mission Viejo, commits to USC per Green Board.

        • Well one thing for sure, no one will acuse him of leaving the closet bare..especially if we get our lineman.

          • The Big IF. With Callaway, I don’t know how we can realistically be confident. Nobody has any inside scoop here on the kid. 247 gives us a bleak shot and the competition is ALA, ORE (two leaders) and UTAH.

          • He took his visit with Hufanga, and they really bonded with our Poly squad..that’s why he didn’t sign in December..according to the interview Hufanga gave during the Army AA game. At least we have a chance.

          • I’m a big SC fan, but objective whenever possible. Were I a HS OL, I would choose ALA every day of the week before USC. They’re better coached and they always have better pure OL talent and play for NCs every year.

In recruiting, 2nd and 3rd place get you nothing. So, we’ll see. If we had a better OL coach, I’d be a lot more confident. We’ll have to win based on the USC brand and weather. If he really likes L.A., great. If he’s another one of those guys who likes small towns, like the Ohio kid who chose CLEM, forget about it.

          • Oh please don’t even kid me with that possibility. What does Helton expect… a miracle with a new starter at QB and having Callaway coaching the O-line?

          • I’m sure that Helton expects his qb, whoever it will be, be quicker and faster than Sam. That’s because they are. As far as kidding you, you mistake my cynical hope for some statement of fact…
And one more thing, if you please. I choose to express my support for all members of the team until their not..I don’t find it helpful to berate them publicly and never have. Criticism is one thing, but the vitriolic diatribes that I’ve seen here don’t have any positive effects. That said, I’m still hopeful of some change, regardless of how it comes.

          • Callaway should scare any decent lineman away. All an opposing coach has to do is show the recruit all the missed assignments that happened in the games this past season and wonder if USC’s linemen got any coaching at all.

          • Truth of the matter is, callaway recruited a five star and two four stars and a three star last year as they knew this would be a down year, especially locally. And this year’s not done yet..that’s the truth, not opinion.

      • Now a different Green Board poster is saying that there has been no OG commit yet, but USC has moved into a better position, that’s all.

        • Yea, still hasn’t been announced on social media yet..but I’m pretty sure he’s coming …interesting to see how things work this time of year. Historically it’s been when we shine, so we’ll see. Certainly those two five stars committing at the ArmyAA Game gave us momentum along with Hufanga’s commitment later in December, have worked to keep us in recruits minds.

    • Great get. He’s small but has great coverage skills and fluid hips. He will be a nice cover guy for SC.

  6. Coach Callaway did an exceptional job with USC’s Offensive Line in 2016. Coach Callaway will do exceptionally well in 2018 if his starters stay healthy. It’s as simple as that. One might argue that Coach Callaway’s effort in 2017 was his BEST EVER with the Trojan’s, winning the PAC12 Championship without a “first string” offensive line for 11 of the 13 game season. FIGHT ON, COACH CALLAWAY !!!

  7. Philadelphia Eagles 15 Atlanta Hawks 10. 10 points not much help from Hawks OC Steve Sarkisian.

    • The Hawks were clearly bogged down mentally for some of the season by their colossal 2017 Super Bowl meltdown, the worst in the history of professionally-organized football. It wasn’t all Sark, unless you’re another full-time Sark hater. Then it’s all Sark’s fault, 100%.

      • Anything the fraud Snark touches turns into a disorganized lazy mess … that underachieves and is just about to fall completely apart before he runs off to the next con job
Falcon boards are hiarious to read … they want the Snark lynched …NFL fans are just brutal not the place for the mentally ill like Sark

    • Yeah, but if he was the head coach at USC you would be telling everyone how great he is

  8. Tee Martin nearly gets shutout in a big bowl game on national TV where his offense does not play well at all.

And USC gives him a contract extension.

When did recruiting skill become more important than X’s and O’s ability in a coach? Is that the message USC wants to send? Suck as a game day caller but if you can recruit, you get rewarded?

Dumb, dumb move by USC. They should have given some of that extension money to keeping Deland McCullough. He deserves it much more than Tee Martin.

    • Deland was leaving regardless of how much USC was gonna pay. It’s tough to beat the family call, as well as the NFL. Most any asst will jump at the NFL unless he’s a coord and already on a path to a HCing position in his mind.

Two of the biggest reason’s USC’s O got hammered by OHIO ST were turnovers and our putrid OL. Tee has nothing to do with those problems, like him or not.

      • Tbag made a good move or lack of one …. go to LSU and get fired with Os staff or stay at USC and get fired with Gomer
Now he only has to pack his bags once

  9. Which offensive coordinators at which schools call “all” of the plays? I know of very few, in fact I no of no O coord that call all of the plays. I am aware of several who split play calling duties. Maybe Saw can enlighten the board on evidenced practices at other schools.

    • Never happen, he’s into bent truth and nuanced innuendo than he is facts, it’s what drives him.

  10. Tee Martin’s the highest paid, game day mannequin in college football, easy money, baby !

  11. He is a awesome recruiter. Sc is always very generous to the best recruiters. See Ed Oregeron’s salary at Sc.

  12. I think usc fan is Bucket or owns. Wild predictions but absolutely no proof or results. Just throwing out bogus BS. JDR coming etc. he is a hand job.

  13. Callaway better grow up and get the o line ready. If not it will be a long season

  14. Tee, is a great recruiter, and that is good. I don’t know if he is a great play caller. I have mixed feelings on this.
