USC Morning Buzz: Keary Colbert Expected To Coach Tight Ends

Former USC wide receiver Keary Colbert is expected to be the Trojans’ tight ends coach next season, according to sources. Colbert has been an offensive quality control assistant at USC.

The tight ends were coached by John Baxter the past two seasons, so Baxter will now focus on special teams. This means two staff members have been promoted from within because Bryan Ellis was reportedly hired as the new quarterbacks coach, replacing Tyson Helton.

  1. Does that mean he is the 10th coach? This means two guys were on staff waiting for their shot and got it. Seems it happens in lots of places, except Alabama.

    • It’s a fluid situation, Helton is looking over our staff for replacements, look for some new hires off of our staff after LOI day.

      • Nope. Not happening. Can you imagine the black eye. “Hey kid thanks for coming to USC, your position coach who helped recruit you is fired. We wanted to make sure you signed first. Good luck. “

    • Pete Carroll said of all the players he coached, the player best suited to become a coach was Keary Colbert. Here’s hoping this is the start of a great career.

  2. Helton coaching tree is a sapling. One that apparently only grows on the hilltops of Western Kentucky.

  3. hmmm….intresting how former players and couches become couches but they dont hire writer or poeple like me or poeple with out jobs cuz if they did theyre would be more working poeple but they dont want that cuz they got all the money and dont want to give it to any one else, so rediculuos! smdh!

    • Good news, Ed (and all USC fans). The Post (newspaper and, now, movie star) is reporting that George Allen Jr. will be named the Head Football Coach at USC later today. A high ranking source within the Athletic Department (who is also The AD) confirmed the paper’s story, “True, George Jr. never exactly coached —-but he was in close contact with his Dad, George Allen Sr., during his Dad’s tenure with the Los Angeles Rams —-and we figured he must’ve picked up something. This hunch bore fruit during our interview with Junior— wherein he repeatedly demonstrated a clear knowledge of the difference between offense and defense —-explaining ‘offense is when you have the ball, and defense is when you don’t’ “

  4. Good for Colbert, maybe the next coach will keep him around after Gomer gets fired after this season

  5. Maybe Keary Colbert should coach the FB’s as well, Helton doesn’t utilize the TE or FB position like the Trojans should so it should be an easy job for Colbert.

Lynn Swann gets paid for doing nothing, why not pay another coach for doing the same?

  6. So the story goes that the Seattle Seahawks front office is not too happy with the team not having made the playoffs and are giving Pete Carroll until next season to make the Seahawks a legit title contender or else it could be adios muchachos for Carroll and his staff.

    • BS…….your nose is growing. Have gomer Helton sit on it and spin. I’m sure you’ll both enjoy it…….troll on!

  7. Mel Kiper has Sam Darnold going #5 in the NFL Draft.

Sounds about right. Probably shouldn’t go that high seeing how Darnold isn’t a team player.

  8. According to football Scoop , Urban Myer made the biggest splash with his tenth hire ….Figures

  9. The Trojans defense was responsible for more wins last season than Darnold was. That Cotton Bowl embarrassment, that loss was on Helton and Darnold.

    • And it wasn’t on the O-line that got completely outplayed, overwhelmed, embarressed, and what not in giving Darnold no time to set up? You need to put Neil Callaway before Helton and Darnold as to why the Cotton Bowl was lost. Without a decent O-line, you have no offense man and USC wasn’t going to win that game. And Helton is likely to bring his friend Callaway back another season. Are you ready for more sloppy play?

      • Darnold doesn’t know how to read defenses, the majority of his passing yards were a result of him throwing outside the pocket due to broken plays.

Darnold won’t get away with that in the NFL, his propensity for trying to force passes will be easy picks for NFL DB’s and Darnold won’t be able to escape the pressure of NFL D lines, LB’s and or corner blitz.

        • When did you become an nfl scout? If Darnold has time in the pocket, he can pick you apart. He is better than Rosen, more durable, stronger, and can roll out of the pocket and hit the receiver. Now I am an nfl scout, or other words, it is just an opinion for the both of us.

          • Darnold had plenty of time “in the pocket” vs Cal, UCLA, Western Michigan, etc., all games where they were close calls.

Those games and then some should have been blow out wins for the Trojans, but weren’t.

  10. How will Jack Del Rio rerspond to these developments? Did he approve of them?………(chortle)

  11. Wow.
JT Daniels moves up from #29 to #6 in the final 247 recruiting Rankings gets his official 5thStar as a reclassification player.

    • JT Daniels is highly overrated, the kid doesn’t have it.

Fink is the best QB prospect the Trojans have going forward the next few years so expect Helton to have Fink riding the bench.

      Fink should just transfer.

    • JT has what we’re looking for, Sam —-he’s tough, he’s smart and he’s got a ton of heart. We’re getting him at just the right time.

      • Michael. if you take a close look, Fink and Sears are both top notch QB’s. Does USC need JT ? At this time, not in my book.

        • I haven’t seen Sears in practice since he arrived at USC—-but I have see Fink run and throw both at practice and during a game. He’s not a great passer. If we were to switch to a run-heavy offense (i.e., drop the idea of balance between pass and run), Fink’s vulnerabilities as a QB wouldn’t show up so much — but, in my opinion, we’d be the least productive offense in the Pac 12.

        • Keely Eure (who’s been Dan Weber’s charismatic other half in his YouTube videos) says that her sources (which just have to be better than Gomer’s, right?) say that JT is “the real deal” —and that, although Sears will come out of spring as the leader, it’s very possible JT will take it from him in fall. And, I must say, Keely is one of the most insightful commentators out there —so I tend to put a lot of stock in her opinion.
          #JTIsGoodEnough&PeopleLikeHim

    • Pretty impressive considering his age. He’s been at his best against top level competition, so let’s hope he can maintain that.

May the best man win- Fink, Sears, or Daniels.

  12. At least Keary knows what it takes to win in Big 5 conference football. Evidently not all of Helton’s cronies he has surrounded himself with know that much.
