Who Will Clay Helton Hire?

USC still has a vacancy for a running backs coach. It doesn’t appear like Western Kentucky can supply anyone. So where will USC find the next Deland McCullough, who was at Indiana before coming to USC. USC got lucky with McCullough. Can it hit the jackpot two straight years?

One potential problem: Coaches might view USC as a one-year job as far as security goes in case the Trojans lose more than expected next season.

  1. Some up and coming graduate assistant, or some retired coach, who wants to experience living in California for one year

  2. Murray State University (home of the Racers) is also located in western Kentucky, so maybe Helton can poach some of its coaches now that the WKU cupboard is bare.

  3. Whats to say they will only get a one year deal, Martin didn’t. Hire a name guy with experience and give him 3 years like Martin.

      • He was a great RB coach and recruiter for us. Had he not decked Kiffin, he may still be our RB coach. We should want him back.

        • Kennedy was the father of the “make one cut and take off” style of running —and it worked for us at the time. The problem I see is that anybody who wanted to deck Kiffin would want twice as badly to deck Helton.

          • Correct —on the d**khead front. Helton’s way nicer. But I heard that Kennedy decked Kiffin because Lane wouldn’t listen to him when he suggested departing from his pass-heavy game plan for the Sun Bowl when the pregame winds were getting clocked at 45 mile per hour…

          • Ha! I was thinking the SAME thing as I was responding to you, steveg! [I was even picturing Lane mockingly sneering at Kennedy a moment before Kennedy put out the lights….]

          • The one cut and go method is still a widely used way to run the ball. USC couldn’t use it this year as there were no holes to begin with.

            #IfThereWereRojoWouldStillBeRunning

          • It does help runners to have a hole to go thru…..

          • Fair point. Lol. I was just thinking about the possibility when I was watching the Vikings yesterday. I don’t know what kind of relationship he had with Helton.

  4. I get the Western Kentucky jab, but it’s overdone we need a quality coach like Lane Kifferdude. Now see that joke becomes fresh Then I can go back to using my Fire Lane avatar

  5. Scotty, No such thing as a Helton one year “life span” as Trojan Head Coach. It is a toxin within your heart of hearts that needs to be drained. Scotty, Some of us know for sure that your coverage of Trojan athletics and athletes is a Toxin Unto Itself. Scotty…………a Mean Heart and an Airhead. FIGHT ON !!!

  6. There sure are a lot of assumptions that next year is last for coach. What happens when we win pac 12 again?

    • “We all love the coach, but we need to go in a different direction”. Helton was hired to rebuild from the ashes, and after 18 it will be ready.

      • I think a few actually appreciate what he has done, yourself included. But most don’t understand that he has come in with character and righted the ship that was way off course. I still believe that he will be the right guy.

        • Chris, I would love nothing more that to see Helton succeed. If he did, USC would soar to the top. He is a rock solid human with his life in order with a lot to admire and respect. Can he get the staff to get USC to the top? That is the big question. Most of us think 18 will make or break him. Winning the Pac is one thing, competing for the NC is another. He has some great wins, but he has some great losses also. I am excited to see what happens in 18 with all that will be going on. The qb race will be exciting in itself.

        • Only if he gets better assistants. Saban hires coaches who are head coaches in waiting

          • Nothing wrong with even hiring ex-head coaches. They had to learn how to follow before they were allowed to lead. Head coaches in waiting are sometimes a crap shoot, win big or go home.

  7. Maybe potential coaches are scared off by the toxic blogger always running down everything USC.

  8. Love it! When it’s a good hire, Helton sucks. When it’s a stellar hire (like D.M.), it’s luck. Can’t win with Scottie!

    • You see that this is a clear and toxic LIE. I only bother posting this as another example of the baseless drivel that is put forth as fact by this nincompoop…by his own admission, Deland says on his own twitter and other social media exactly when it is he first meets Lynn, and it is on campus, well after he’s been hired..

  9. Unbelievable post, Eeyore. USC got lucky? Hardly. Luck for USC is you and your negativity heading back to the Hundred Acre Wood. The one potential problem – Eeyore still covers USC.

  10. Find a Deland McCullough understudy who can continue his coaching methods. However, McCullough had a swagger and a no fumble expectation of his players that may be hard to find. He called it going into “the Room”.
