No Rush

For several weeks, there's been speculation that Oaks Christian quarterback Jimmy Clausen could commit to the Irish when he visits next weekend. But now it sounds like he could wait until February to make his decision, which would maximize the publicity surrounding his announcement.
That move would show a shrewd side not seen in a quarterback since Matt Leinart left USC and began trying to pressure the Tennessee Titans into making him the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Clausen will not be coming to USC despite what the C&G glasses wearing masses want to so desperately believe. Once JC announces he is going to ND, those same masses will claim one of the following: 1. JC isnt as good as advertised 2. SC doesnt need him 3. If Pete would have wanted him he would have got him or 4. His brothers were not that great and he wont be either.

Well, if Jimmy waits until signing day that might force SC's hand.

Pete's not going to wait on Jimmy's forgone conclusion. Pete will give it one last shot and then move on to Paulus or Mallet or the Sampson kid. It might even be better in the long run in that the kid would come in not expecting to start immediately. Personally, I would love Paulus. He is 25 pounds heavier that Clausen with a great arm. Plus, his sister's father in law is Pat Haden.

Where are you getting this information on Jimmy Clausen re: "But now it sounds like he could wait until February . . ."? I haven't read anything online or in the print media that indicates he will not be an early commit, as both he and his family [father] have previously indicated on more than one occasion. Would you kindly e-mail me your source[s]. Somehow the report of a change in plans has escaped me. Thanks.

NO player of Clausen's status commits early, this is a non-story. I personally wouldnt blame the kid for not coming to SC. First, he probably doesnt want to redshirt and two, he would have to sit behind Sanchez for 3 years. I dont think anyone should be worried because in 2 or 3 years there will be another "cant miss" prospect that will come to SC.

It has been confirmed (ESPN and other recruiting web sites) Clausen will commit on Saturday morning to ND. He will ask other recruits also at the ND spring game to join him. Sounds like a big weekend for ND.

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
