USC speaks

Martha Harris, USC's senior vice president of university relations, said USC's alcohol-ban for Coliseum events remains in effect and will not change next season.
The Coliseum sold beer for the first half of Sunday's scrimmage and later took responsibility for the incident.
``I can tell you definitely that (President Steven) Sample did not authorize it and nothing's changed,'' Harris said. ``We weren't giving anybody permission (to sell beer).''

This continues to be one of the most idiotic decisions in Mr. Sample's canon of idiotic decisions. Banning beer in the stadium, as everyone has witnessed during the pre-game festivities, has simply contributed to more lawlessness, more overindulgence and, more drunkeness. Never before had I seen the Coliseum sell "mixers" during a game. But, there they were in all their glory during the Arkansas home opener - lemonade slush, fruit punch, blueberry surprise - all for that special bottle of vodka located in someones pants. Rediculous. Meanwhile, Mr. Sample et al are reaping dollars upon dollars by commanding a captive audience of boosters during their Athletic and "Scholarly" tailgates. "Jack Daniels anyone? How about some Merlot with that steak? Need more drink tickets?" This is hypocrisy at its finest and Mr. Sample knows it... Beer was never a problem at games. Sample simple caved into NCAA pressure.
