`When It Rains It Pours'
I was on the phone with a USC coach when the news hit that freshman quarterback Mark Sanchez was arrested for sexual assault.
``When it rains it pours,’’ the coach said.
Sanchez was released late Wednesday night on $200,000 bail and after speaking with more people than I can keep track, I’m led to believe some facts may emerge soon that will help Sanchez’s case.
I hope to find out more details today.
I have no idea what happened in Sanchez’s apartment on Tuesday night with a female student. But I am surprised the LAPD arrested Sanchez so quickly and turned Cardinal Gardens into a media circus with at least five TV vans camped outside all night.
If the recent incidents involving USC tailback Hershel Dennis and former cornerback Eric Wright proved anything, it’s that the district attorney’s office moves with caution in high-profile sexual-assault cases. Maybe it wouldn’t have hurt to question Sanchez and others before making an arrest, much like with Dennis.
That said, the part of this case that disturbs me is witnesses said Sanchez, who is 19, was drinking at the 901 club on Tuesday night. This is an issue USC coach Pete Carroll needs to address and I’m not just referring to Sanchez. He needs to discuss it with the entire team.

Interesting update and article. Other reports place the time of the incident (or at least the report of the incident) at 12:30am, while Sanchez was at the club. Yet your article suggest the incident took place after 1:30am when he returned to his apartment.
I'm more inclined to believe your account as you had more sources. I agree with you something needs to be done regarding student athletes and underage drinking. Not matter what school I think its a larger problem then most programs admit.
We don't agree on much, but I'm with you about Sanchez being at the 9-0, and about other players being there.
HOW DO YOU DO?
Wolfie--supposedly Sanchez earlier on Tuesday had attended a USC Athletics function on Rape Prevention. Also, last Spring he and Brian Cushing at a Newport Beach area party where Cushing got into a fight but apparently charges never brought or later dropped.
You wrote that Sanchez arrested for alleged sexual assault but also noted that he was not charged with sexual assault. Huh? Can you explain this? And I agree about the "interim suspension" from USC--can Mark still attend classes, take finals? HE could move into a $750,000 house in San Diego which previous tenant vacated....and just CHILL.
TKS SCOTT, YOU HAVE THE MOST UPTODATE INFO ON USC NEWS....THE PROCESS OF INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY SEEMS NOT TO APPLY TO USC PLAYERS--THEIR ACCUSATION SEEMS TO BE GUILTY AS CHARGED BEFORE ANYTHING HAPPENS...PETE MUST CLAMP DOWN A LIL??
Scott: I have written to you before. I am retired from the LAPD and the LA County Public Defender's office; my wife is a Judge. I can tell you that the DA's Office does not have the investigative responsibility in these matters until AFTER the arrest and AFTER Detectives go to the DA's Office with the Arrest/Crime Report and apply for the Complaint. That has not been done. This has thus far been Chief Bratton. His NYC-type "Perp Walk," the over-the-top $200.00.00 bail, and the RHD assignment to the case vs. the usual desk detectives. Drop me an EM for any info. Doug
scott,
isn't this decision time?
pete has to be thinking - i (and the staff) try so hard to select "solid" players to recruit and they work so hard with them to get them to do the right thing and be mindful...and they STILL blow it - it ain't worth the headache/heartache.
meanwhile the sc administration mus be thinking - pete has done a great job on the field and we know he tries to keep the players straight and narrow....but whatever he is doing is not working - good bye pete, we expect more from our student-atheletes.
has that started in either camp yet?
i gotta say that i despised the florida state, miami and nebraska programs when they were rife with the same sort of incidents and now its my own alma mater that is plagued with/is accepting bad behaviour.
