Calling An Audible

The commitments of high school quarterbacks Aaron Corp (Orange Lutheran) and Samson Szakacsy (Camarillo) demonstrated how quickly USC wanted to move once the Trojans lost out on their top two choices, Jimmy Clausen and Mike Paulus, who selected Notre Dame and North Carolina. It also showed recent events probably played a role.
Ordinarily, USC would hold off on Corp and Szakacsy until their summer camp for further evaluation, because the Trojans are notoriously picking about handing out scholarships. But that was before Mark Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault last week.
The Trojans moved extraordinarily fast by their recent standards and locked up commitments by Corp and Szakacsy on the same day. At least now everyone knows the quarterback class for 2007.

Comments

Actually, the trend of accepting early verbals began with Galippo and Green, both of which were before the recent problems.

Actually, Scott is talking about the quarterbacks...if he was talking about Galippo and Green, he would have said so....

scott,

i guess that usc was desperate for qb's. usc is not the only college ftbl team in the us.

who cares if these 2 did not have 5 stars, but only 1? they should work out just fine. how many stars did leinart have out of high school? as i recall, not many.

carroll is adjusting to being unable to cherry pick any player he wants any more.

competition is good for all schools.

keep up the great work,

robert t. gilleran

Scott Wolf

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
