Dual Meet Update, Part II
The official score sheet with the long-jump results dried out and was faxed to USC tonight. The handwritten sheet shows Jesse Williams jumped 7.30 meters, which is 23-feet, 11-inches. USC, and the public-address announcer, believed Williams jumped 24-2½, which would have won the long jump and given the Trojans the team victory. But the recorded mark of 7.30 means that means UCLA wins the dual meet.
However, I'm not a document or handwriting expert and I'm looking at a photocopy of the faxed original, so I can't attest to its accuracy.

Why didn't the USC coach watching the long jump say anything at the meet? I was in the stands and thought that Jesse had won the long jump. Why didn't the coach stick up for his athlete. Don't you think its a little too late now to be saying something about it?

Scott,
How can you call yourself a journalist? I know that the Trojan fans love you, but it appears because you comment and do not care for facts. I know that may be a little harsh but no legitmate newspaper writer should ever make comments like "USC, and the public-address announcer, believed Williams jumped 24-2½, which would have won the long jump and given the Trojans the team victory." without at least verifiying something. The PA announcer did not believe at the meet nor today that Williams won the long jump. He did announce a mark for Williams that would have won the event when it was first reported. It was corrected and he stated the corrected mark well before the jump that won the event. I don't know (of course I know) but I do not think it is the first time in history of sports or track and field that a PA announcer announced the wrong mark/score. If you would have attempted to ask him he would have been happy to let you know what happened. Of course the only sources you use are Trojan sources so I am sure many people who were not even at the meet were happy to tell you what you and they wanted to hear. Hopefully this is not how you report but who knows. As for Williams, he probably heard the mark translated incorrectly but did the officials on the field ever give him a mark other than 7.30? Did you ask him? This BS of yours takes away from what has been historically a great meet and tons of fun. I admit the more recent history seems to be suffering but it is because of people like you. Instead of celebrating great student athletes on both sides you have to start utter BS in the guise of reporting.
