The California National Organization for Women sent a letter to USC president Steven Sample and Coach Pete Carroll today expressing ``outrage'' for ``repeated gender-based crimes committed by USC football players that are ignored by the administration and swept under the rug by local law enforcement.''

The California National Organization for Women (CA NOW) is outraged by the repeated gender-based crimes committed by USC football players that are ignored by the administration and swept under the rug by local law enforcement. The treatment by the university of the crimes committed by football players sends a clear message to women on your campus that their personal safety and dignity is not as important as the success of the football team. The players themselves are learning that society will grant them a level of impunity as long as they are athletes, and that other qualities, like respect of women, abiding by the law and facing consequences to bad decisions are unimportant.

It is simply not acceptable that these messages be the pervasive ones of your institution of learning. Students on your campus have spoken out and nothing has changed. Female faculty on your campus have taken a strong stand—and even sworn off football—and their concerns have been virtually ignored.

At least four players have been accused of crimes in the past two years. All of these crimes have gone unpunished. That is not to say there has not been consequence to these actions. In one case, the victim of a sexual assault was so humiliated by the experience at USC that she quit school and moved home. In most cases, alumni lawyers have cleared players of crimes, with help of friends in the DA’s office. These players are developing the dangerous habits of too many men in power: abusing women and breaking the law with no consequences to face.

We implore you to protect your female students and aid in the growth of your male athletes and start taking these crimes seriously. The possible ramifications on the football field are nothing compared the long-term affects this behavior has on the victims, other female students and faculty, and the culture of the university.

We trust that you will use your leadership positions to lead on this issue. Please take action today to ensure that women on your campus are safe, and that men on your campus learn to respect women and the law, regardless of what they can do on the ball field.

We realize that you are not responsible for what happens outside of your campus, but we know that if you set the tone with a zero-tolerance policy for gender based crime, or any criminal activity of athletes, it would be a good first step and send a strong message to the rest of the community.

We look forward to hearing from you as to how you intend to deal with this crisis.

For Justice,
Helen Grieco
Executive Director, California NOW

There is no justification for harming women. However, a person is not quilty of crime just because there are allegations. This is a typical NOW reaction. They are basically asking for SC to punish Mark Sanchez regardless of whether he is innocent. Shouldn't SC wait until the DA's office makes a decision?

California NOW has no grounds to complain!
When they stop the murder of innocent babies, then we can listen to their complaint!

Well unless there is a conviction... there is nothing that SC and Coach Carroll can do... Rape is a horrible crime no doubt... but to single out SC like that is out of line... for all we know... these girls are suffering from buyer's remorse.. and feel like they have to ruin a young man's reputation to make themselves feel better about their mistakes... if there was a crime commited... and it's proven without a reasonable doubt... then these ladies can write all the letter they want.

Are these the same people who supported Bill Clinton even though he assulted an intern working at the White House? Interesting how they supported one man proven guilty, but would want USC to punish a man just because of unproven allegations? I guess being accused is enough (to NOW), and Mark doesn't deserve a fair trail or evan a hearing with the DA's office before they would have USC (and the State of California)to take action against him just because he is a football player and USC hasn't met their quota (according to NOW) of convicted football players. What happened to the presumption of innocence? I guess it doesn't apply to "date rape" cases. Note that in 25% of these cases, the male is proven to be falsely accused (Source, Fox News).

NOW's accusation that these cases have been cleared "with the help of friends in the DA's office" is outrageous, especially since NOW cites no evidence supporting the claim. As far as I know, the DA's office has handled these cases straight by the book.

It is not unusual for people to be arrested or charged and then find that charges are either not brought or dropped for lack of sufficient evidence. Anyone in doubt on that point should just spend a day in court at a criminal calendar call.

NOW wants USC players singled out and convicted of crimes even though independent authorities have concluded that the evidence was lacking. I prefer the system we already have, you know, the one set up by the Constitution.

It's an even numbered year ... lets see ... oh yeah, itis an election year. What we just read is actually a fund raising letter.

It's sad that NOW, which, whether you agreed with them or not, once set the debate. Now, (no pun intended) they simply pile on.

USC has had kind treatment from the DA's office in the past. Now that is catching up with them. Some people don't want to see it happen again. They are getting on the DA and USC early before the arraignment. Sanchez is reaping what other people have sown.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the way the football team has acted off the field under Carrolls' tenure. This is a typical response from USC fans who don't look at the big picture, but look just at how the team does on saturdays.

The culture of Trojan football is embarrassing and so are the majority of their fan base!

For one minute, why don't you people put yourself in the shoes of a father whos daughter goes to USC, then tell me if you think you feel comfortable with her roaming around campus late at nite!

Screw them! NOW is pathetic spotlight seeeking group of women who didnt get asked to thier proms and are going to make every man pay for it! No evidence in any of their accussations. They should be held accountable for making false and slanderous claims against USC, the adminstration, Coach Carroll and the football team and those of us who support all of the above! If a crime is proven they can make statements to that fact otherwise shut your cake hole! It's still America and a man, believe it or not NOW, is still innocent until PROVEN guilty!
