Stat Of The Week
Someone told me that 11 USC football players were either arrested or investigated by police since April, 2003. That number seemed wrong to me, so I made my own list and it turned out to be low. A logical question, of course, is how many Ohio State, Florida State or fill-in-your-own-school’s players were arrested/investigated in the same time period?
I think it’s important to separate arrests from investigations, however. There are police investigations that go on every day but the only time you hear about them is when a public figure is involved. Ask the Lakers’ Kwame Brown about that. And the two investigations involving USC players did not result in arrests of players.

If no charges are filed against Mark that will be the third (I think) player accused of sexual assault to not be convicted in any way.
Show us the stats of investigations/arrests with convictions and how that relates to the usual statistics of the LAPD.
When I look at some of this and I think, "WOW, I'm glad I'm not those guys". College would have sucked!
Arrested for taking a whiz down an alley, arrested for accidently breaking a window at a party, arrested for yelling lewd remarks (not actually going with) at a prostitute, investigated for drinking, arrested for fighting with a team mate, investigated for sharing an apartment with your friend, investigated for your father not paying his bills, kicked out for experimenting with drugs...
On top of that there have been a couple of UNSUBSTANTIATED allegations of sexual assault, b/c let's face it, these guys are just moving targets for big $$$ settlements against future earnings...
The glare of the LA spotlight is a two edged sword. Afterall, what other team would I (and half the world) know all this about?
scott,
you are dodging the question. you got a number. are you afraid to publish it?
in addition, mark sanchez is getting special treatment at the da's office now. however, he should never have been arrested and had to post bail in the 1st place.
he has no history of violence and could not have been a danger to anyone. he has always been a fine student.
this policy of arresting people and forcing them to post $200,000 in bail before any real investigation is done and each side get's an opportunity to present evidence flies in the face of every fundamental constitutional right that our ancestors fought and died for and for which our soldiers are currently fighting and dying in afganistan and iraq.
just think, if mark had not been a usc ftbl player from an affluent family, any girl angry at being spurned could simply go to the lapd. make a false accusation against the guy and get him arrested.
not too many of the ordinary citizens of la county could come up with the $200,000 bail and they would rot in jail and never get any real chance to defend themselves.
they would end up being advised to plead guilty by one of the local public defenders and their lives would be ruined.
unfortunately, that is how things are currently done in la county.
the system and procedures make a mockery of the fundamental constitutional rights of every citizen.
it is high time for cooley and his crew to clean up their act before the feds or the voters step in and force changes.
keep up the great work,
