The Bubble Bursts

Quarterback Matt Leinart enjoyed a cozy existence at USC, required to speak to the media for just five minutes a week during the football season with an occasional longer interview in the offseason for magazine fluff stories.
Some readers were unhappy I referred to Leinart recently as ``petulant’’ after he fired his agent.
Well, now that he’s left his protective bubble, Leinart finally showed the public a glimpse of his coarser side in his latest ESPN diary. Apparently he’s upset people found out about his relationship with Paris Hilton (The nerve!).

``I can guarantee you there were thousands of football players out there doing worse things than me. No one even gave a crap about what they were doing,’’ Leinart wrote.
That’s hardly All-American language for a budding NFL star/actor. But he continues the aw-shucks routine that works to those who didn’t know him at USC.
``Everywhere I go and everybody I talk to gets out in the media. It makes me look a certain way when in reality I'm just a normal guy. I'm having a good time.’’
I guess when you spend $140,000 for a party in Las Vegas and Hilton is seen canoodling with you, no one is supposed to notice. Imagine if this guy actually went to the New York Jets and dealt with real media scrutiny?
``I was really disappointed in the (draft) process because it takes away from the football. It gets to all the other little technical stuff,’’ Leinart writes.
This is an amazing statement. Leinart became the first football player in history to sign a contract with Hollywood talent firm, CAA, specifically to make him an entertainment star, then expected NFL teams to ignore this small detail.
Even funnier is the part where he says he’s just friends with Hilton, since our spies know way better than that.
A couple nights ago, I was introduced to a famous figure in the local sports scene who knows athletes from USC and UCLA. He told me USC players told him Leinart changed over the past two years and became more interested in celebrities than his teammates. Nothing new there.

Scott:

You really need to stop obsessing about Leinart. Obviously, as a media member you didn't like dealing with him last year but you are using this forum to try to convince your readers of your feelings. Its a broken record and shows your vendetta. BTW Several athletes have CAA as their marketing agent (Jeter, Manning, etc). He might have been the most famous collge football player ever and he played in the entertainment capital of the world.

Scott, do you realize that you sound like a bitter groupie who kept trying to get into Matt's VIP booth but was never let in. Give it up already. By the way, shouldn't this type of stuff be in the Page 6 of the New York Post.

Real lame Scott. All these cheap shots you are taking at Matt is making you look bad, not him.

It is bad enough to print hearsay as a journalist...but to actually quote a "guy, who knows a guy" as a source is kinda embarrassing. I'm sure Matt is not as pristine as his image, but I've never seen anyone call out Matt for his commitment and leadership. All his teammates and coaches have said how great of a field general he was. And if he was really so concerned about celebrities...why wasn't he living with one instead of his teammate Dwayne Jarrett...would've kept USC out of trouble.

Scott,

I like your insight into trojan football, but you seem to be confessing jealousy not even found amongst bickering beauty queens. Let's see some positive energy towards trojan football! After all, it did help you gain noteriety.

Be grateful. Be honest- and don't forget your integrety (you seem to leave that one at the door when it comes to the trojans).

1. Seemed like Reggie really disliked him during his Heisman acceptance speech.

2. Seemed like his teammates were really disappointed when he decided to come back to school.

3. Seemed like the staff was really disappointed in how Leinart related to his teammates.

4. Who are "our spies"? Who is "our," frankly? That's embarrassing. You read like Cindy Adams. Is it you and your pals in the gossip section of the paper? That is literally how a Page Six story reads, which is fine, if you write for Page Six, as their reporters accurately describe themselves as gossip columnists.

5. "A couple nights ago, I was introduced to a famous figure in the local sports scene who knows athletes from USC and UCLA. He told me USC players told him Leinart changed over the past two years and became more interested in celebrities than his teammates. Nothing new there."

Where to begin? So, some guy says something, you report it, then add a comment about how it's not anything new, with no additional sources...and you believe yourself a journalist? Laughable. You use one anonymous source that you JUST MET to suggest something is fact-based and supported by many legitimate sources. And the guy just volunteered this to you or, as one might suspect from your columns, you were near tears describing how angry Leinart's great life makes you. Let it go.

6. As for his "cozy" existence, Leinart was one of the most covered college athletes of all time, irrespective of your "five" minutes comment. More importantly, he was in COLLEGE, not a paid athlete. USC and the football staff had every right to limit his time with the media.

7. How do you know how much Leinart spent for his party? And why do you care? He spends a lot of money for a party and he can't complain about media coverage; what does one have to do with the other?

8. He's an almost 23 year old kid who suffered some public questioning recently, both of his talent and his commitment? After going 37-2 and winning 2 national championships, isn't a little confusion and disappointment understandable? And as for the media coverage, my guess is that Matt probably feels like the big-time athletes at other big-time universities are doing the same types of thing that he is...only in environments that don't lead to national reporting like l.a. does. He's probably right. And that type of characterization of him, because of where he played ball, was bandied about before the draft as part of the reason he might slide; again, understandable he might be a little disappointed in the coverage.

Leinart has changed and everyone around the athletic department knows about it and talks about it openly. Bryn Cameron dumped him, not the other way around. Not that Matt cared, he wasn't exactly faithful to her. Did anyone ever wonder how the struggling, middle class Leinarts were able to pay for this luxury apartment? Or who paid for his insurance policy this past season? I'll give you a hint: he was recently fired by Matt Leinart.

Typical stupid domer... what on earth do you know about the leinart's finances. go grow the grass 10 inches high again and ruin some more careers.

Scott, let it go. Leinart is gone. Accept it. This obession you have with him is getting out of hand and is downright creepy.

Scott,

I love you men, you are hlarious on the P's show and provide good info. Sometimes you jump the gun to be the first, but you are always the first when something legit happens.

But to Leinart: GET OVER IT. He is gone. I feel the same way you do about him, but by constantly bringing him up you sound like a bitter old man. I rather read about Booty and Sanchez now. its time to move on. Little Matty is the Cardinals problem now.

Scott:

I LOVE your blog and your insights to Trojan football. I was going to blast you, though, for this Leinart thing, but found all these others. Please get the message. It really makes you look bitter/jealous/something.

I love Leinart. He led the greatest 3 year strech of USC glory in my lifetime. I went through 20 years of mediocrity hoping for a return to the good old days....and they came. Best of luck to you Matt. Scott, get back to the other stuff....

bob

Who the hell cares about Matt Lienart at this point, what he thinks or what he does. He is now a back-up QB for the AZ Cardinals, thats it. I couldn't care less what he does on or off the field.

I will always remember how he "big timed" all the USC boosters at the 2005 Salute to Troy and hid behind his security while the entire team, including the coach, were taking pics and signing autographs. Add Reggie Bush to that list too.

Wow...these people haven't been around Matt over the past couple of years! Matt's bodyguards at the "Salute To Troy" dinner made sure no one got to interrupt him to talk, get autographs, or take pictures during the moments he spent there. Matt does not have the class of a Troy Polamalu or Rodney Peete. Monster ego...could you imagine him playing in NY with the Jets? Wanna bet this is one of the reasons they passed on "Hollywood Matt".

Scott,

Is there a free clinic near the Cardinals training camp? Matt may need to visit. You know, when the "burning" sensation becomes intolerable.

The last left-handed QB from LA with a huge ego was thrown under the bus by his teammates, literally (at least if you saw the way James Williams waived Hugh Douglass through) and left football as one of the most despised players in Chicago sports history.

Scott, I think you're not doing yourself any favors. If Matt did something in the future no one would believe that it isn't personal. It all seems a bit petty.

Try seeing if USC has something set up for the poor young man who was shot, so that we can help his family with the funeral. Everyone is talking about it, with great sadness. To watch someone with opportunity get killed senselessly by a stray bullet from a thug is heartbreaking.

Scott,
Your on target on this issue. Obiously the guy went Hollywood.

yeah Scott...us Trojan fans only want positive stuff...we put our blinders on for anything negative...

You want people with blinders? Go read the pathetic rants of those on USCFootball.com. They are the official "Defenders of the Program".

Scott, I know you've been a long time, faithful Trojan supporter. You supported the team under Hackett and always believed. You now sound like the bitter La Jolla ex-wife, Betty Broderick, who sought revenge after her husband left her for a younger wife.
