I think he meant prospect since USC seldom offers and finishes the recruiting process without a camp visit. If so it would have most likely been a top, top player from out of state (who are the only kids that get offers and committ before camp).

Wouldn't Scott have hinted at the player being a top national prospect from out of state??? Or maybe he did (note "prominent"). That would make it pretty easy to guess by USC's current recruiting efforting.

What possible good does it do to spread gossip and innuendo about some kid who may be or may not be guilty of some indiscretion...guilty by the media,and have not the guts to step up and name the convicted. Shame on you.

"...a football camp" -- does this mean he was disinvited from one of USC's camps, or a was it perhaps a camp at another school?

Wolf---what good does this rumor do? Why cast a shadow on all of USC's recruits like this? It would be like me telling you that one of your friends is a drug dealer...but not which one.

Is this comment really necessary? It's like saying: A prominent news reporter has been accused of lying. When all I am referring to is that idiot from the NYTimes.

I think your blog is terrific but entries like this should be avoided. There is no information here. I would like to say it is gossip but it is so flimsy it doesn't even qualify for that.

Scott, this is your all time low. Do you support the players who are part of the program? Maybe if you did you'd get a real job.

all time low which means you will be here tomorrow to read this blog since you love it so much...since when is a journalist expected to write only positive things 24/7?...JohnnyU is right, go to other "fan" websites if you want the rah-rah stuff so you can feel better at night when you go to bed...but based on your theory, Scott wouldn't write about Leinart/Jarrett and the apartment, Bush and the house, Sanchez and the sexual assault charge, etc...

all you have to do is stop reading but Scott does have a real job, to report on the program good and bad and to sell newspapers...and trust me, I'm sure the Daily News editor enjoys the constant attention Trojan fans give the blog...

It fairness it was entitled a blind item. Hey, it fuels speculation and it doesn't hurt anyone right? As long as it is based on something fine. And like The Fan said, it sells papers. I wouldn't go to this well too many times though.

In my opinion, this is a ridiculous post Scott. In response to other posters, the issue is not that purported bad news is being spread about SC players. I'm okay with bad news. The issue is that I can't see how this is real journalism. All this does is breed rumor mongering. It's so tabloidesque. If there is a character issue about a specific recruit, and have a firm handle on what the character issue is and you are willing to write such things about a 17 or 18-year-old, then write a story. But if you don't have a firm handle on what the character issue is, and/or you are not willng to name the player for whatever reason, what good does the above post do? It unnecessarily casts a cloud over scores of young men who did nothing wrong, and breeds nothing but rumor mongering amongst your readers. Is it titillating? Sure. If your goal is to be titillating and breed rumor mongering, is it effective? Sure. But should the Daily News' USC beat reporter (and a USC graduate) be above such pandering? Absolutely.

for all you that think just because someone may question a blind comment, it may suggest they don't appreciate SW. don't get it twisted. his blog is a soruce of genuine reading. so again, "why bother with posting something that is blind". unless he cough up details I feel SW is wasting his valuable time. oue teasing his readers back fired this time. I personally enjoy reading his writings. I just don't like wasting my time, reading stuff that means nothing, if you don't have details. Come on Scott where's the journalistic intent in that post?

hey wake up, Matt....EVERY website and blog is about rumor mongering...do you think the people that post on the two main USC websites think before they type?...no, everyone is about rumors about recruits...that's the whole part of it is that you can post pretty much what you want until the moderators either delete your post or move the topic.

get off your high horse and pay attention to current American "journalism"...it's all about tabloids and rumors and gossip...that's why there's E! Entertainment television, Access Hollywood, The Insider, Entertainment Tonight and the list goes on...that's why there is more reality television now than ever before...this is a BLOG and not part of a newspaper and hence it possesses different standards, whether you like it or not...

Fan, you missed my point. I could care less about the current state of fan websites, or reality television, or television news magazines, etc. I expect more out of this blog than I would expect from a poster on wearesc.com, or from some idiot telling me about Tomkat or Brangelina. You may be content to allow every journalist and information source to pander to the lowest common denominator. I, however, choose to stay on my high horse and expect more. Don't worry, though -- I'm sure Scott appreciates the low expectations you bring to the table.

Huh??? Those who read the blog every day lack self-esteem? You make no sense my friend. I do read the blog frequently, and that has nothing to do with a lack of self-esteem or will-power. I read because I am interested in USC's football team and appreciate the information source the blog provides. However, when I see an entry that is thoroughly lame, I'll say so. Simple as that.

I am going to give a little lesson here so that when someone see's "BLIND ITEM" in the title, they will know what to expect... ready?

WHAT IS A 'BLIND ITEM'?: A blind item is a piece of gossip in which the subjects of the gossip are not identified by name (usually in order to avoid a libel suit). The answer is sometimes guessed by the group, other times the answer becomes evident when an incident hits the news, and most times, we never know the answer, but we sure have fun guessing.
