No Parking
USC is becoming increasingly hostile toward the idea of the NFL returning to the Coliseum. Sources said President Steven Sample believes the idea is bad for USC under any circumstances.
Already, the failure to see eye-to-eye on some issues saw USC threaten to suspend the use of any university parking structures for NFL games.

Agree with Mr. Sample 100%. Having to move for several years while it is being renovated is rather inconvient to say the least. Where are we going to play for the 3 or 4 years? Rosebowl? Also reducing the number of seats to entice the NFL, seems quite unnecessary for SC games.
Good idea of restricting the use of SC parking spaces.
Why should USC capitulate to the Coliseum Commission and the NFL, as another local anti-SC daily suggested in an article last week? SC has been the only constant tenant for the Coliseum, and now that the NFL comes calling, the commissioners are whining about a 'sweetheart' deal with SC? They signed the contract, right? Live with it. If it weren't for USC, the Coliseum would either have been bulldozed long ago or would be rotting away like the Sports Arena.
Completely agree with Eric. But- other than Al Davis - has ANYONE ever won a battle against the NFL?
I was generally pissed at that article in you know where that was reprinted on a number of USC Football "supporter" sites.
As the article pointed out, there are other sports programs that use public facilities. The choices to illustrate it was suppose to demonstrate that USC has a "sweet heart deal". Talk about misleading.
Obviously state funded schools are often in municipal funded buildings. Many private universities (which operate as a non-profit, public serving, education and research entity) use public sports facilities. Yet the article cherry picked Tulane and the University of Miami for comparison.
Tulane and New Orleans don't share the particulars of their arrangement so...
The University of Miami operates its football program at a loss because a lack of ticket buyers. There is no issue of the stadium failing to accomodate fans. Furthermore UM has some other special circumstances. Miami-Dade County had overcharged the county severely for providing medical services. The county and the city of Miami have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars and have been trying to get matching state funds to build a new half billion dollar stadium for the UM football to share with Major League baseball.
The situation is unique but only because USC is the only university with a major football program that has continued to pay and share profit for a public stadium for so long, (continuously since 1924) even as he neighborhood deteriorated and profits declined. USC has also been THE force of community development, and economic development in South Central/Downtown area for the past four decades. Now that the area is being redeveloped with private investment and USC is drawing record crowds again, it seems that some city administrators and doubtlessly private interests are trying to turn the screws on USC.
I suggest that City of LA gov't remember that USC gives much more than it gets from the city, in terms of community and economic development, social service programs, urban and metropolitan research and planning, and serving as a general economic engine for the region.
John, you are SO right. USC used to and may still be the largest private employer in the county.
Personally, the NFL can find another home, as I really detest the renderings of the remodel. Basically discards the architectural integrity of the structure.
Maybe a new start and look to the remodel, and a better outlook on the co-tenant's needs and leverage position would be in order.
SMOKE SCREEN!!!
USC and the NFL are climbing over bodies to get together here.
Anybody that is buying this "USC is trouble by the NFL", is a fool.
All the people complaining about SC's "sweetheart deal" should shut the hell up. Sure, when SC is having years like the past 5 it looks like a sweet deal. Has everyone forgotten about the 90's? As a student during those lean years, I know that a stadium with 30,000-40,000 in it was not uncommon.
I don't know what the rental agreement was back then, but I'd bet that the Coliseum Commission didn't offer to cut SC a break because the money wasn't coming in as well as it was in the 70's.
Everyone knows that the only people who want a football team in LA are the other NFL owners and the TV networks. If LA was such a great football market, why have so many teams left it??
SC should just buy the Coliseum and end sublet to the NFL on their own terms ;-)
THE NFL IS THE GORILLA IN THE ROOM...THEY TEND TO ACT LIKE "GODS GIFT" TO ANY CITY THEY SEE FIT TO
"EVEN CONSIDER" FOR A FRANCHISE...USC SHD PLAY HARDBALL AND DEMAND THAT THE COLISEUM COMMISH ALERT PRES SAMPLE TO ALL NEW DISCUSSIONS..
USC IS THE MAJOR LOYAL TENANT AND DESERVES COMPLETE INPUT INTO THE "ATTEMPTED NFL TAKEOVER"
