Tight end Blaine Irby of St. Bonaventure High in Ventura committed to Texas. Irby (6-2, 224) produced the highest-rated workout among a large group of high school players at USC in an April camp.
But Irby’s family and USC did not see eye-to-eye, which eliminated the Trojans and gave the Longhorns a big Southern California commitment.
Meanwhile, Everson Griffen, one of the defensive ends in the country, will attend next week’s USC camp. He’s officially listed Arizona, USC and UCLA as his top choices although sources say he’s been lukewarm to the Bruins recently.

Scott,

In what way did Irby's parents and USC not see eye-to-eye? Was it USC the institution? Was it a specific coach? Was it something that happened on a visit?

"....lukewarm to the Bruins recently."

And the beat goes on.......

I know you're a journalist and can't give up your sources, but what's this about Griffen being "lukewarm" to the Bruins? Why do always use this hit-and-run tactic when posting information when you provide nothing to back it up?

I follow recruiting very closely, and this is the first I've heard of Griffen saying anything that indicates he's cooling on the Bruins. I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong, but please quit posting ambiguous stuff unless you're willing to throw us a bone.

Was it USC not matching Texas' asking price? Isn't that what they mean by bigger in Texas?

Of course Wolf isn't going to throw us a bone. He clearly got his information off the record. Why would he expose his source? He doesn't need to in order to keep people interested. He doesn't need to change his ways; he's already got a fanatical following. You're proof: a Bruin posting on an SC beat writer's blog. LOL.

Also, why would you suprised by Griffen cooling to UCLA? A better question is why would an athlete like Griffen pick a program like UCLA? If he wants to play for a mediocre team, he can stay home and do that in Arizona.

John -

I think that Irby found a better situaton for himself playing for the champs in Texas. No need to insinuate shady dealings. It sounds like sour grapes.

Who really cares about Irby anyway?

As far as I know SC has as good a chance as anyone to try and sign Everson Griffin... and the person leading the charge to make him a Trojans is one of SC's top recruits... a young man by the name of Chris Galippo (the Nations #1 LB recruit)... these young meen have been keeping in touch via e-mails and phone calls... Galippo had said in an interview that he had 3 guys that had "silent verbals"... 2 of these verbals were Marc Tyler and Marshall Jones... could the 3rd vrbal be one Everson Griffin???

TW said:

Who cares if Irby chose Texas? The TE positionis not a position of need for the Trojans recruiting efforts.

kahlil said:

marc and marshall weren't the two silents that galippo was speaking of. from a source at sc... two of the silents were definately from oos

damon said:

Kahlil,

R the two recruits still silent? And are they expected commits or recruits who sc fans wish would commit?

john said:

I would take a stab at the 2 out of state recruits and say that they are Griffen and O Dowd. Those would be my leading 2 but I would not be surprised if Joe McKnight/Burkes were 2 as well. Although even a public verbal from Joe McKnight would mean nothing as he is in bayou country and LSU does the voodoo well.
I was hoping one of out of state silents is James Wilson, but ND has us beat there right now.

kahlil said:

they are still silent... expected to announce publicly at end of august or beginning of september. also a highly touted instate recruit will announce at end of july

I dont know where you get your info but thats wrong. Irby has nothing but good things to say about SC and their coaches. His only issue was that they wanted him to play fullback but thats not why he decided not to accept USC's late offer. He just felt Texas was the place for him, its as simple as that.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
