Speed Sells

There was a football feel to the 100-meter final at the state track meet Saturday night, with USC-bound Jamere Holland and Travon Patterson running in a strong field that included two players the Trojans covet – junior tailback Jahvid Best of Salesian of Richmond, Calif., and junior cornerback Shane Vereen of Valencia.
Rodney Glass, who will play football at Arizona State, won the race (10.52 seconds) with Holland second (10.59), Patterson fourth (10.62), Best fifth (10.65) and Vereen seventh (10.82).
Believe it or not, putting up impressive times in track can often lead to football scholarship offers. It’s already helped Vereen, who was offered last week by USC and drew notice in the Foothill League finals.
Long Beach Poly junior Bryshon Nellum caught only two passes last season but his constantly impressive times in the 200-and-400 meters (he won both events at the state meet) means he could be offered a football scholarship if he performs well at USC’s summer camp.

Scott Wolf

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
