Tyler Buzz

As expected, Oaks Christian running back Marc Tyler committed to USC. Staying close to home obviously favored the Trojans but Oaks Christian sources tell me it did not help that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis made a disastrous impression during a one-on-one conversation in the spring.
As I mentioned yesterday, Oaks Christian safety Marshall Jones could also be committing to USC soon.

I would love to hear the "disastrous" details of the Weis meeting just for kicks...
Give ND all the midwest payers and we'll take the SoCal ones..

Scott - any way you could expand on that disastrous impression?

george said:

actually notre dame already took the #1 guy in So Cal.

"See these rings, kid? If you can suck one of these off my fingers, you are the lead back in '08..."

actually Notre Dame already took the No. 1 kid that will lead them to zero national championships....so enjoy that one George....

Did Weis, aka Drippy, forget his hankerchief for the one-on-one meeting.

Anyone who saw last year's SC game in hi-def knows what I am talking about.

Again, I ask: how can crew cut Charley be deemed a genius after two mediocre years (still no win over SC or a bowl opponent) while Pete Carroll gets largely ignored?

HCTIB said:

Explain to me how Weis made a disastrous impression when Tyler was quoted saying the following....

"Probably the highlight of the trip is that I had a one-on-one with Charlie Weis," he said. "He talked about how I feel with the school and how I fit in. He just wanted to know if I had any questions."

Also, how was he a 70% Notre Dame lean after the trip if Weis failed in his one-on-one meeting.

Sorry we took Clausen from you, enjoy watching him throw all over you for 4 years.

I am just pointing out a fact. You are just hurling insults like a child.

time once again for another episode of

"AS CHARLIE TURNS"

Marc Tyler sits quietly on his couch, smiling as the legendary Notre Dame Coach Charlie "Cornelius" Weiss comes in to recruit him.

WEISS: Hey what -- what's up my brutha? Homey here fom the 'Appolis Hood. (He farts)
TYLER:(frozen, still smiling) I'm doing fine. What's that... hanging from your nose?
WEISS: (picks the bugger from his schnozz) Listen Steven -- (wipes it on the couch) do you wanna play with us or not?
TYLER: The name is Marc. Marc Tyler.
WEISS: Oh damn! I was thinkin' of the skinny dude in Aerosmith, Steve Tyler!
TYLER: Thanks. I get that all the time.
WEISS: You know, bro, we can see you at linebacker by 2009, but we need to know NOW.
TYLER: Thank you very much for coming Coach Weiss, but the superstars go to 'SC, and that's me. I gotta go. Me and Snoop Dogg are going to see Jay-Z for lunch.
WEISS: Lunch?! Where?!!!

When he turns back around, Weiss realizes he's all alone -- by himself, in the 'Hood...

It turns out, Marc Tyler ran a zig-zag end-around that had Charlie's head looking one way while Marc ran another.

OVERHEAD AERIAL MOVING SHOT -- MOMENTS LATER
We watch Marc Tyler running at super-human speed, evading cars on the freeway...

As the camera pulls up, we see where he is running to... ALL THE WAY TO USC...

Weiss told Tyler he'd have to attend classes, thus the disastrous impression.

At what point do ND fans trot out the "we didn't want him anyway" or the "his numbers are inflated because of the crappy conference" comments that USC fans were throwing out when Clausen announced that he was going to ND?

USC won this recruiting battle in USC's back yard. Any word on what the horrible impression was? Did Weis not kiss butt quite as well as Carroll?

Dustin Kiefer said:

First of all everyone in the country was on Jimmy Claussen's jock til he committed to ND and now he's not that important, etc, etc. And Tyler himself said after visiting ND that he was a 70% ND lean and that the excitement "wore off" when he got back. So I don't know what your "sources" are, but they are wrong on this Tyler thing.

This is captivating news! Did Weis not use the Spicoli approach when talking to the SoCal kids?

Please expand on the "disastrous impression" by Charlie Weis. I find this quite interesing.

For those ND fans in here who are in denial that their football team hasn't found a way to beat SC the last four years, they are in for another stretch of painful memories to try and erase. Claussen at best gets to start as a true frosh on 07, and by then, SC's current team will have had its rebuilding '06 year out of the way. I've seen Claussen play in high school -- no question, he's a great talent and I'm not going to belittle him. Godspeed to him. But in the games he plays against SC -- he will have wished he had taken the challenge to duel Sanchez for the starting job. Because I'll take Carroll, Sark and Kiffin any day as the trio to mold a kid behind center before I take Charlie Weis.

Right, Carson?
Right, Matt?

george said:

Weis' track record of developing quarterbacks (Tom Brady, Brady Quinn)is equal to if not better than anything that Sark or Kiffin have done. They are realtively new at this compared to Weis. And Sark and Kiffin owe a lot of their success to the legacy and momentum that Chow built. Time will tell who is right on this one. It is certainly not a lock either way.

John said:

Brady Quinn and Tom Brady weren't developed by Weiss. Brady was a good qb that was underrated out of Michigan and had the perfect opportunity to learn, wait and then compete. Brady Quinn hasn't done much yet but I really think he was both underrated as was the job done by Ty Willingham.

George has a great point about Chow though. We have also heard so much about Steve Clarkson and his impact with USC qb's. Leinart swore by him but I hear there is a falling out with Air 7/Clarkson and USC coaches. C'mon Scott. Tell us the skinny. I just hear these things second hand by someone at 'SC. Give us the scoop!

george said:

Thanks for the nod for my point on Chow. However, I still have to disagree with you on Weis. Yes, Tom Brady was underrated but he was hardly "pro ready". You said your self he had to "learn, wait and compete". Who was it that helped him through that phase? He didn't do it on his own. And that is how a lot of people would define development. As far as Quinn goes, in a way you are right: he hasn’t done that much yet. This season is where he defines his college career. But up until Weis came, he was good but inconsistent. He didn’t really progress as a sophomore as expected. He had some games late in the season that looked like he was regressing. That certainly changed when Weis showed up. It could be coincidence but if you looked at Willingham’s overall ability to develop players, one can make a good argument that it isn’t.
