Jarrett Can Practice

Although wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett remains ineligible, he is eligible to practice with the Trojans when camp opens next week. Jarrett continues to wait for the NCAA to rule on his reinstatement following his living arrangement with Matt Leinart in an affluent Los Angeles apartment last year.

Deja vu all over again???

Two yrs. ago BMW was practicing with the team and I remember at Howard Jones Field he was helping/teaching DJ stuff.

Fast forward two years, and now DJ is in BMW's position! He's going to be a jr. (just like BMW was going to be a jr. in 2004)

We all remember how the NCAA ruled on that....

Let me guess....the NCAA will inform us as we are boarding our plane to Arkansas???

Unfortunately, PC's words and confidence is just like it was 2 summers ago.........we all know how that turned out for (the now lazy) BMW!

Man, if only we could keep our players to their senior year. Just give me back that maniac linebacker Lofa Tatupu for the Rose Bowl. Vince would have been clocked by that Tazmanian Devil. No fear. He left his junior yr. and Seattle's defense was transformed, all the way to the Superbowl. Tatupu and man of Troy Palamalu, with Dick Butkus, are the best linebackers I've ever seen and they will be in Canton someday. Long live the Men of Troy...

I agree with John. There is a sense of uneasyness with DJ for some reason. I think the NCAA has a history of screwing us(usc football). I am wondering why it took up until July 11th to get all that paper work in. And PC is always going to be positive but with the crazy a$$ NCAA there is always a chance at some outrageous punishment to try and prove a point.

Hopefully we won't have to throw Patrick Turner into the fire too quick due to some retarted game suspenision. DJ provides balance to the force and is will be greatly needed for every game to command a double team.

I sure want to believe Coach Carroll and what he says about DJs situation, but I cant. Its not like the NCAA has a long track record of being a forgiving and understanding organization. I understand that coach has to say what he has on the subject publicly, but I cant imagine he actually believes it. Losing DJ will be devastating. The offense has almost no returning starters, and IF DJ is lost, that will only put added pressure on the incoming WRs. The Trojans need DJ this year more than any other player. This whole situation just stinks, and I would still like to know why the Athletic Department didnt know what was going on. There is no way they would have allowed this to happen. Isnt there someone whose job it is to basically know where these guys are living and how?

We can all thank Scott Wolf for the DJ situation. His 'insight' into USC football is what got this story rolling. But people like Scott need to feel like they matter and need a paycheck too.

If you take a brief look at the situation it is easy to see that DJ and BMW are 2 separate situations.

1) BMW announced his intent to turn pro and began living, training and receiving benefits as such. It was BMW's stated intent to be a pro which really got him into trouble if you read the NCAA ruling. DJ hasn't gone there.

2) If the benefits were so improper, why not make USC forfeit football games. Theoretically, DJ was ineligible then. There has been no mention of this.

3) The reinstatement is simple. If DJ pays his share of the back rent, there are no improper benefits.

4) This really is a trumped up charge the NCAA is making. If Dad Leinart paid for the entire apartment and Matt lived there himself, there would be nothing wrong at all. What if the apartment was sublet at 625/month to a non-football player? Still no issue. Because it happened to be DJ, a football player, it then becomes a problem?

The crime here is the NCAA. The NCAA and USC have a long arduous history. DJ is caught in the middle of this feud and will be the casualty. I predict, just like an earlier post, that the NCAA will wait until the last minute to suspend him for at least the Arkansas game if not more.

So let me get this straight--if Scott Wolf had not reported it (and I do not recall that he was the one who broke the story, but for the sake of argument will go along with that assumption) the NCAA would not have found out. This is like blaming Nixon's actions in Watergate on Woodward and Bernstein. I think the situation is nuts and hope the NCAA gets it right this time, but SW is not to blame for the situation.

Question: have Jarrett's parents actually written a check to the Leinart family? It doesn't sound as if they have.

That's quite odd...petition the NCAA to pardon your offenses by saying, "we'll pay off Bob Leinart once you officially pardon us..."

I hate to break it to you USC guys, but that's not the way it works in real life.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Jarrett:

Kindly scratch a check to Bob Leinart - then we'll talk.

Sincerely,

The NCAA

“BYB, you really asked the right question: “Isnt there someone whose job it is to basically know where these guys are living and how? Just follow the dots to find out who keeps track of the football program, the coaches, the players, etc..

Look at “Exhibit A, the home game football programs, page 192 from last Fall. Look at “Exhibit B, the 2005 annual USC Football Media Guide, page 206. And look at “Exhibit C, the 2004 annual USC Football Media Guide, pages 364-367. These are the pages with the Heritage Hall administrators. They’re all listed there.

There in the annual 2004 USC Football Media Guide, page 365, under Dr. Daryl Gross, Sr. Associate Athletic Director, it says, “Handles day-to-day supervision of 9 sports (men’s and women’s track and water polo, plus men’s basketball, volleyball and tennis, and women’s soccer and cross country) and also is involved in football. So, in 2004, Gross was “involved in football but didn’t handle the “day-to-day supervision. But, remember, in January 2005, Daryl Gross left to become the Syracuse U. Athletic Director.

So, which HH administrator is mentioned at anytime in 2005 as “Handles day-to-day supervision and thus having direct oversight of the football program? Sorry, no one is mentioned. And apparently no one was promoted to fully replace Daryl Gross.

Thus, it appears the entire football program is overseen directly by a guy named Michael L. Garrett. Ever heard of him? Think he used to be a “boxing promoter at the Fabulous Forum.

But wait. One more amazing statistic that should make you even madder. The home game programs in 2005, on page 192, proudly declare in the Mike Garrett biography page that, “During his tenure: USC has won 15 national titles ……… Wow! 15 national titles between 1993 and 2005! Now 16 national titles after the men’s water polo won it in late 2005. Wow! 16 national titles between 1993 and 2005! Make that a Will Ferrell “Ricky Bobby Wow!

But wait. We’re talking about national tiles? The LA Times on May 25, 2006 wrote an article, “Zeroing In on a Hundred, UCLA's sports programs have set the overall standard for success in the NCAA, and the Bruins are on the verge of a milestone moment. The top three universities were UCLA (99), Stanford (92), and USC (84).

But wait. Compare how many national titles the UCLA Athletics Programs have won vs SC during Garrett’s 1993-2006 14 year tenure.

Okay. Let’s check that. Since 1993, UCLA has won 6 in Men’s volleyball (1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2006), 1 in Men’s tennis (2005), 1 in Men’s basketball (1995), 5 in Men’s water polo (1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2004), 2 in Men’s soccer (1997 and 2002), 3 in Women’s softball (1999, 2003 and 2004), 5 in Women’s gymnastics (1997, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004), 4 in Women’s water polo (2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006), 1 in Women’s outdoor track & field (2004), 2 in Women’s indoor track and field (2000 and 2001), and 1 in Women’s golf (2004). So, since 1993, that adds to 31. Vs. 16 for us.

Nuff said? But wait. Look at Stanford’s national titles since 1993.

Stanford, thanks greatly to their Women’s Athltics Programs, has won even more NCAA national titles since 1993 than UCLA. Let’s check that. Since 1993, Stanford has won 4 in Men’s cross country (1997, 1997, 2002 and 2003), 1 in Men’s golf (1994), 2 in Men’s gymnastics (1993 and 1995), 3 in Men’s swimming (1993, 1994 and 1998), 5 in Men’s tennis (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000), 1 in Men’s track & field (2000), 1 in Men’s volleyball (1997), 4 in Men’s water polo (1994, 1995, 2000 and 2001), 2 in Women’s cross country (1996 and 2003), 3 in Women’s synchro swimming (1998, 1999 and 2005), 5 in Women’s swimming (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1998), 6 in Women’s tennis (1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006), 5 in Women’s volleyball (1994, 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2004), 1 in Women’s water polo (2002), and 1 in Co-Ed sailing (1997). “BYB, I’m disgusted too.

So, since 1993, that adds to 44. 44!!!! 21 in Men’s sports. 23 in Women’s sports. Vs. 16 in total for us. Totally disgusting.

Okay okay, of course, while some of you may say that some of those sports at UCLA and Stanford aren’t “real sports, they do count in the NCAA standings, every conference recognizes them, those 30 high wood trophies are desired by 50-100 other Division 1 universities, and those are Olympic athletes on those teams that we see and cheer for every 4 years wearing the “USA.

So, the formerly decades long, unparalleled and sterling Athletics Heritage at USC, hand delivered to the new Athletic Director in January, 1993, has been badly fumbled, and in the case of the USC women’s side partly neglected, by the “boxing promoter, Michael L. Garrett.

Can’t blame that on the Rodney King incident. Can’t blame that on the OJ verdict. Can’t blame that on the Raiders moving back to Oakland or our academic standing rising. Can’t blame that on global warming.

Just maybe, if the Dwayne Jarrett mess “stings the football program, and whether the Lamar Griffin mess does or does not “sting the university, we might hope that the Board of Trustees in its wisdom retires the guy directly overseeing the football program and on whose watch these violations occurred.

Who would know the Tings quitting the team would get more response to any story Wolf has ever posted.

these sports may count in the ncaa standings, but some are not sports in which we compete. further, as state school is at a significant advantage in a non-revenue sport as a split scholarship can still let a student attend and compete.

A.C. Anders,

But he hired Pete Carroll, even though not his first choice. How many NCAA titles in football do the Cardinal and Bruin have combined? I'll take 2 Football National Championships over 75 other sports championships any time.

it's a matter of priorities. usc doesn't do many of those sports you mentioned. women's synchronized swimming, co-ed sailing? we just don't have the budget for it. we don't even have crew or even a full scale track and field program. title 9 means that we have to create a balance with programs and spending for women's sports which just aren't profitable or self sustaining, and that adds to the burden. none of this is garrett's fault.

we do athletics largely for marketing sake, to raise the awareness of the school, to present a certain image. that's why usc is always trying to promote a (goody-two-shoes) image and why there is interest for media (espn and the newspapers) to try to tear it down. so far it is holding up; no one but the ncaa is bothered by reggie's father in-law not paying his rent, or dwayne jarrett living with matt leinart. frostee is a post usc, problem and usc is distancing itself as fast as it can. it is also why v.p. johnson is ready to kick kids out at the whiff of scandal. regardless, there will be problems.

there are 100 kids and dozens of employees associated with football and hundreds more with usc athletics. and because of the myriad of ncaa regulations and and the capricious way in which they are ruled upon it is, as joe paterno stated, not a matter of whether you are violating ncaa regs, but which ones and by whose reckoning.

another major purpose of our sports is bring in money. it's doing that in the confines of a bad pac-10 media deal and non-ownership of a stadium which are issues above garrett's pay grade.

an answer to winning in more sports is to raise more money. we can use that money to buy more facilities (purchasing expensive LA real estate) and pay more coaches for sports that lose money, and with title 9 we'll have to do it in pairs. but sports are suppose to serve the university and its students not the other way around. our money is better spent in bettering the university (in its primary functions as an education and research institution).

a.c. anders, you seem like you have a bone to pick with mike garrett and usc athletics in general. your exhaustive research did little to convince me that this is anything beyond your personal greivance.

i've heard that mike garrett is difficult, i've also heard words to the contrary on more occassions. one or both are true but he is also a well educated, well accomplished steward of U.S.C. athletics. he is also a TROJAN.

Roger,

If that is really the case, then you my friend, are an idiot!

Einstein! Have u lost your molecules? How can u pontificate such idiosyncraticly-hate-filled monikers against thy fellow carbon-based human. Say your sorry man.

Sports besides football do not matter. USC is a football school first. No other school on the west coast can say that. People who pay a premium for football tickets tend not to give a damn about sailing or coed sports that the fruits in westwood win champions in. At the end of the day we only care about our football program winning and our star players not siting out of games because of NCAA rules being broken.

NOTE TO FELLOW BLOGGERS: Stats about NCAA championships outside of football do not belong on a usc football blog. Try rainbowsandweenies.com for your long a$$ essay style book reports about COED hamster diving.

Everyone else please return to your normal blogging conversation.

Scott Wolf

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
