Johnson Cleared

Tailback Stafon Johnson of Dorsey High was certified by the NCAA Clearinghouse and will be eligible this season. Johnson's eligibility is one of the most significant in the freshmen class, if you listen to other coaches.
``I love Stafon Johnson,’’ Washington coach Ty Willingham said. ``I thought he could play on either side of the ball. I didn’t see many players that could hit as hard as him last year.’’

Exquisite news Stafon Superstar! This tells you this guy is serious about SC football. We'll see alot of him this yr. And he likes to hit, like Perez. Say goodbye Tye, he's ours...

What? The fact that he qualified academically shows that he's serious about SC football? Is showing up on campus the first day another sign? Or going to practice? Or putting on his helmet? What a moronic comment.

Hey Huh? What's your last name? D-Duh? Are you still 4 foot 5? Huh? You write like a Troll because you think small, huh? If I want to compliment Stafon Superstar for doing his homework & paying his dues, then I'll do it without your comments... Your hopeless bruin-like brain is down to it's last two brain cells -- and they're fighting. Fight on... Huh?

Qualifying is no sign of any kind of commitment. You are supposed to qualify. That is the bare minimum. You want to congratulate the guy on performing at miniumum acceptable standards?

We just lost Ashley, and how many others to not qualifying? Nowadays I get excited just to see them get in. Look how long we had to wait to finally see Chauncey Washington get his academics in order. Isn't it true that it's harder for athletes to pass at 'SC than a state school, or is that just hype? I think these guys need all the support & motivation they can get.

You can compliment Stafon all you want, but qualifying through the NCAA clearinghouse is about the bare minimum a player can do to show "this guy is seriousabout SC football". And the NCAA clearinghouse has nothing to do with the academics of a particular school...same qualifications for the QB at Harvard than the OL at Auburn. Give them their support, but don't throw a party for doing the absolute minimum.

Grow up and don't be such a shrill cheerleader. And pointing out all of those other players that did not qualify or that Washington couldn't get his academics in order isn't a bright light on USC. How did a guy that didn't qualify for two years all of a sudden get on the dean's list?

"Huh?" You're a dip that doesn't deserve a reply but CW dropped his computer engineering/comp science double major (by his own admission he was strong in lit based courses and weak in advanced math and science like Calc 2 and Physics); he stopped the daily 4 hours of practices and three or four hours of weights, lifting, conditioning, etc. He also got tutors for each subject and got together with the academic counselors on time management. He has now cut back on things in his personal life and is strictly about fb and studies. You learn and grow. It's called the college experience.

Stafon Johnson, like a lot of these kids, was playing college level ball, running college level track and wasn't getting the SAT or ACT prep classes they needed or the tutoring they needed. They have to be sit down eventually and do their school work or they won't be playing ball. Kudos to the high schools for not just passing them on with GPA's high enough to skirt by.

anonymous, excellent retort; well said... just an added note: ESPN reported that Chauncey Washington is being described as " a cross between LenDale White & Bush. He's as big but faster than White, and has better hands than Bush." This guy sounds outstanding, can't wait to see him compete...

Anon,

before we get too off track here, my original comment was trying to understand why Johnson being cleared by the NCAA shows that he is "serious about SC football". Seems to me that to be eligible to go anywhere, you have to pass through the NCAA Clearinghouse. Doing this doesn't show his committment to SC football anymore than it shows his committment to high school sports (most leagues require some standards to be able to compete) or his committment to be able to go after USC girls. And DAVID, you're a constant cheerleading shrill with inane comments. You forgot to end your last comment with a "Fight on" or how Washington is "a true man of Troy" or some other lame line.

Furthermore, if Washington was attempting a double major that mostly included classes that he couldn't make the grades in, then where was his commitment to SC football? Seems to me that he wasn't being "serious about SC football" if he wasn't making the grades to see the field. His academic advisors should have told him long ago that if he isn't strong in math and science, then a computer engineering/computer science double major might not be his thing. No shame in majoring in the humanities at SC…lots of people drop out of engineering (that's why its known as pre-business among students at many universities). But to get the facts straight anonymous, according to an interview he gave, his degree choice was a math major with a minor in computer science (not quite the same thing as the engineering double major) and he dropped those courses to major in sociology. After math and comp sci, sociology should have been a breeze. But if you're going to be the shrill cheerleader, then at least point out the inconsistency.

But to give a fair shake to Washington, after becoming academically ineligible for the second year, he lost his scholarship and paid his way, which does show quite a bit of commitment to the program. It probably would have been much easier for his to transfer to another program and take the easy way out.
