Playing For Free

USC was No. 1 last season in at least one category. Trojan rookies amassed impressive fines last season in the NFL.
The Grand Rapids Press reports that wide receiver Mike Williams was fined more than $400,000 last season for being overweight and late to team meetings.
Williams needed to earn more than $600,000 to pay the fines, which are imposed after taxes, the paper reported. That means he plays last year and this year for free, because his salary is $580,000 for his first two years. The paper also reports Williams might not even make the Lions' roster this season.
He wasn't the only Trojan in trouble last season. Sources in Miami said defensive tackle Manuel Wright was also fined more than six figures by the Dolphins for similar reasons, which meant he also forfeited most of his salary.
No wonder Williams said in January he missed USC.

it's a job now guys, get used to it. playing for losers in bad cities with badcoaches and bad team mates is what it's about now. get your bucket of pain pills, your syringes and play as selfishly as possible so that you'll have the numbers you and your agents need for the next deal, but don't the media mad... god the cfb is better than the nfl.

manny wright was on saban's list from go. (it was said that saban didn't want him but managment did, and that undercut him.) first practice saban stops the ENTIRE PRACTICE, gets everyone around including the reporters and reams him, saying that he's going to cut him. then there was the saban basically calling him a wimp in public for tearing up the eyeballs when he was pushing with all he had while Saban said he would cut him because HE made the decisions. Mr. "I'll cut your scholarship and send you back home" Saban, great motivator.

it should be said that Saban had a former LSU player of his signed because he called him crying as he was going undrafted so he has his soft spot.

Why does it seem that you take pleasure in reporting these two players' misfortunes?

Did someone make you cry during your time at SC? Because you sure don't seem to be supportive of SC football at all.

I don't expect a homer. However, the tone of your articles in general, and this one specfically, give me the impression you gloat whenever SC's football program/players are cast in a negative light.

Who does Mike Williams think he is, me?

DarrenR said:

Copacetic,

Dude, I hope that was aimed at Scott and not me! (Obviously I mentioned the crying.) I think I said that Manny was being treated like crap by Coach Satan. If someone stops practice to tell you and you alone he's going to cut you because he doesn't like or want YOU specifically to be around, then blows it up on television to show how tough he is you'd have a hard time adjusting.

I basically said that the NFL can be an ugly league (nasty coaches; nasty culture; mostly crappy cities;and selfish, profit driven play) as opposed to playing at USC. I also made an allusion to Coach Satan at LSU clearing out a few players to create new scholarships (as opposed to USC where the school has stuck by kids for years even when the kid was obviously not going to pan out football wise).

READ CAREFULLY before making statemnts like that. If you meant Scott, carry on...

Note to Mike Williams: Get out of that den of vipers, you don't need that crap. Just follow the lead from Curt Warner. He was once on top, a Superbowl MVP, then was disrespected, underpaid, cast aside and traded... Here's the key to his turnaround -- Warner took his anger and re-directed it in a positive way. He used it to become a better team player, no matter where or for how much. Now Warner is respected as an excellent teacher to young QB's like Leinert. I hope MW finds another NFL team. If he doesn't, he can always go to Canada and get stoned with Ricky Williams...

Geez, I don't understand what the big deal here even is. It's a rough tough world out there. There is competition everywhere, be it on the field in the NFL, on the court in the NBA, in the corporate boardroom, or even who gets to be "french fry man" at the local burger joint. As far as this blog is concerned, I'm only interested in what is happening concerning the Trojans and their competition both current and in the future as they compete to win all of their games. Whatever Mike Williams or Frostee or Manny Wright or any of the other Trojans who have moved on do from here on out has no bearing of the Trojans of today or tomorrow imho.

Its a tough for some to go from "playing a game" to being a "professional" as such a young age.

But from what I read, USC does gives these kids every chance to learn while they are still in school.

So I'd say that the NFL has every right to fine those that can't comply.

Fight On!

DarrenR if yo could provide some more info on Mike Williams that would be helpful. It should also be said that a current pro football player said that 80% of the guys in the league can succeed if given the chance. So, hearing things like what Saban did to Manny Wright and clearing space for a LSU player just confirms that a lot of players just are not given the chance. I hope that is the case with Mike Williams. He was such a great player with SC (visions of Keyshawn) that I would hope he continues to work hard and make a name for himself in the league.

Fight On Mike and Manny!

players in the NFL that arent ready is all this is about. For the two players mention, there are plenty of trojans doing just fine. I do not feel sorry for neither player since they both left school when they did not have too.

Let me clarify I love my trojans not the individual players. Any former usc player that makes an azz of himself makes our program look bad. Currently both of them are making us look bad. Crying on ESPN is not cool. being out of shape when you have a whole lot of talent is simply crazy. both guys left sc and ran for the money and now are paying the price. Fatburger is still hiring Manny and Mike...

stay in school trojans that degree is priceless
when your not really ready for the NFL

Also remember another key point these are folks who now are getting paid.

What about his signing bonus? BMW might be a knucklehead but it is inaccurate to report that he is essentially playing for free.

DarrenR,

It is apparent that Copacetic's comment was directed at Scott. The statement, "However, the tone of your articles in general, and this one specfically, give me the impression you gloat whenever SC's football program/players are cast in a negative light.", pretty much sums it up, unless you are now writing articles.

To quote you "READ CAREFULLY..."

Punchin out.

He meant Scott.

Scott seems to deal in schadenfraude...it's not hard to read his articles and notes and sense a twinge of glee from him that USC players/program are in trouble, etc.

Reporting facts is one thing. Reporting them and then adding unnecessary editorial (i.e. "No wonder Williams said in January he missed USC.") then brings Scott's personal feelings in play...and those feelings betray his enjoyment of misfortune that befalls USC players.

If I recall, Saban called out Manny when Manny showed up not dressed for practice. Hard to blame Saban for that one.

DarrenR said:

Actually I did blog and write articles, sometimes on SC. I thought he might have picked up from the link that I used to include.

And Denali, it was more than that. I was a local of Miami at the time and I still have writer buddies in the area. Saban came on tv dogging him and Manny was already at practice in the middle of practice so it wasn't that. Again, it was all televised (including the incident and Sabans remarks) in Ft. Lauderdale television and covered by local media. Jason Cole, the Herald reporter that broke a lot of the Reggie stuff, had an absolute field day.

marlonmj,

I'm embarassed you're a Trojan. You are making us look bad. Go apply to UCLA for grad school so you can become an official Bruin and whine like them.

You think Coach PC would want to share some of these postings with the current team?? Its sad to see these kids start salivating at the thought of the NFL, some as soon as Sophomores, only to find it being an ugly business. The fun part of Football gets killed and sure they get the $$$$ but they lose the passion for the game.......It seems like every year some SC Alums come back and talk to the current palyers about staying in school and enjoying the GAME a little longer, but, the lure of the $$$$$ is too strong....wonder how Reggie and Lendale will handle the rigors of the NFL Business. As far as playing , I have no doubt they will excel, but what about the BS and the politics they will have to bear?? they really dont think about that part till they get there....
They thought going to class was tough? stand by to stand by fellas.......

Marlon,

I agree with true-sc-fan. What happened to "You're a Trojan forever" motto? I think your comment says something about your character and if we were using your standards, you would not be considered a Trojan.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
