Position Of Strength

An assistant coach with an AFC Central team watched USC's summer workouts and came away thinking the Trojans' wide receivers would be the team's strength this season. Particularly impressive was freshman wide receiver Vidal Hazelton.
``He's looking really good,'' the coach said. ``I think he will play a lot this year.''

We gotta love this blog best when Wolfie quotes NFL coaches's thoughts on the Trojans. Theyr'e the experts, and they keep confirming how unbelievably deep with stars this team is.

My question to someone who might know: A few days after the Rose Bowl, someone interviewed Norm Chow back in Tenn. When asked what he would have called on that infamous 4th & 1 play, he instantly blurted out the answer, which showed that he'd been thinking about it.

I heard it was a play-action pass, with a fake to Bush and a quick out to White or the tight end. Huff was blitzing, it would have been an easy TD. Man, do we wish it happened... Anyone know if Chow had a comment about that play, or any others?

hate to be a monday morning quarterback..but a nagging thought refuses to die..our playcalling doomed us in the title game..inexperience showed in the selection of plays in crucial moments..Oh to have had coach chow for the rose bowl..we wouldve boldly went where no programs ever been a 3 time champion..can't wait to see this years version of trojans reloaded GO TROY....

Thats why the best players come to SC. How many schools have NFL coaches just hanging around waiting for you to impress them before you play any college ball.

Booty better keep his shoulder/arm rested b/c he will be slingn'em all day long. We have six NFL receivers on our roster- its going to look like "NFL BLITZ" if the Oline gives him time. Ruel better get these guys motivated, if they are, Booty does not have to do much at all- be average and play within the system (McDonald can do that). The only way we wont score 35+ is if our Oline is average and can be dominated. Booty does not have to do much, or more importantly Booty's job is to not do too much. The receivers will get WIDE open, the running backs will hit their holes and hopefully not fumble, the defense is so competitive during practice, I can only expect that games will show off our talent and dominance (we have got guys on the Dline that are as fast as the opponents RB, and some of our LBs are faster than opponenets' starting WRS.)

I expect our youth will show on defense the first six games, but nothing that will make us lose.

The name of the game in 2006 is "make them beat us" b/c outside of Oline we do not have to do anything extraordinary. After four quarters talent will rise- but they have to be motivated! I say its ALL on Ruel's shoulders!

I believe I called that play in the stands at the time, LOL; I don't know about Chow though. But I do remember Michael Huff's quote that Texas knew LenDale was coming, that if Leinart had passed, the game would have been over.

David's reporting of Chow is exactly what I thought Chow would do. Chow was known for running a bunch of play action plays to get the ball to a fullback or tight end to get a first down. Instead, last year LaneSark kept trying to feed the ball to Bush and run him into the line where he would get stopped. Hopefully, LaneSark have learned their lessons and will improve on their playcalling.

Remember USC at ASU in 2003?

Late in the game, USC at ASU 37 yard line...

Chow calls play action. Leinart fakes to Lendale White pass to Brandon Hancock in the flat. It goes for a touchdown

It's a lot easier to call plays after the fact. You can't be wrong!

If SC had run a different play and failed, the same people would say "Why didn't we give it to Lendale White?"

I see Chow as the biggest loss, even more so than Reggie or Matt. I think the offense, if it was under Chow, was good enough to hide the d weakness better. Hope Lane and Sark can step it up this year.
