Immediate Impact

New faces always become a center of attention in training camp, but it's worth noting that freshmen were the top three rushers, the top receiver and top tight end in Wednesday's scrimmage.
But here's something else to consider while freshmen capture so much attention right now. Part of that reason is the Trojans recruited so many skill players and just one offensive lineman.
If USC brought six potential All-American offensive linemen, there would hardly be a fuss because they would probably be redshirting and you would probably notice a lineman making an impressive block as easily a running back or wide receiver making a big play.

Good point, Mr. Wolf, but remember big Butch Lewis is now on the O-Line. That makes two o-liners in this recruiting class that's more stacked than Sophia Loren.

The games are won in the trenches. You can have a pretty good back and if the line is great that guy will look awesome. Conversely, even a great back will have troubles if he has no blockers. Ask Adrian Peterson about last season.

Nice SLAM! today of Arbogast by your contemporary Hoffarth in his Media column.

Scott Wolf

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
